it was definitely rushed, but it had a bunch of good moments, IMO.

GoT was rife with poor writing since season five, and steadily got worse.

Yeah, I agree. I liked Yomi as a character so I enjoyed all his scenes, and Hiei's relationship with the one demon lady was cute. It's not that bad of an arc if you don't think about what it could've been imo.

Chapter Black ruined YYH. The Yusuke is a demon retcon pretty much killed any reason to still be interested in it.

Not really. I didn't like Chapter Black but having demon blood in him was fine with me.

And to answer the OP, no the Demon Tournament in YYH was not anywhere close to as bad as the royal fuck up that was the GOT final season.

It was random and convoluted af. Yusuke was perfectly fine as just a human, but then the author randomly makes him part demon all this time, as if to say only demons can be the coolest in this story. It's just like how Saiyans became annoying in DBZ.

And it wouldn't have even been too bad if Yusuke simply turned into a demon. The issue was just making him a descendant of a demon, more specifically one of the most demons ever, all this time. It was beyond forced.

Honestly, nah. All of the Psychics were pretty lame except for the Doctor; his fight with Yusuke was cool. Sensui's multiple personalities were last minute tacky nonsense. And man, it was so lame how Hiei was made into a dumbass in the beginning of the arc.

Chapter Black was the worst arc but it didn't ruin the show. The Demon Tournament was a good recovery.

Toguro liked what he saw when he and his bro fought tusuke/kuwabara at Tarukane's when they rescued yukina.

He showed up, showed off a fraction of his power to yusuke, and threatened to murder all of his friends/family if they didnt participate. That got yusuke and kuwabara in. Also had yusuke shitting his pants.

Hiei and Kurama were drafted/volunteered due to needing to fill out the team, and being the only competent allies they had.

The masked fighter should be obvious.

I wonder if Togoro killed Yusuke in the tournament, would he have awoken as a demon then?

Obviously it was written after that arc but didn't it have to do with how powerful he was? He wasn't significantly more powerful after the tournament in the chapter black arc.

Eh... he was powering up pretty steadily throughout chapter black. Had to be. Sensui was so stupidly beyond toguro that yusuke tangling with him at all basically necessitates that. Still nothing on his massive post-awakening spike, but a steady growth nonetheless.

The anime version was actually pretty good. It didn't have crazy high steaks or tension but it had a lot of heartwarming moments that brought a lot of closure for some characters.

As much as I would have liked it, it didnt make a ton of sense with how it was set up. Especially the sides that were taken.

Hiri and mukuro I can understand. But the lynchpin of the whole thing was, and always would be, Yomi and Kurama. And I'll be honest, I NEVER understood that alliance. Yeah, I get the two had history in kurama's demon fox days. But Yomi's ideology was basically diametrically opposed to the person kurama became post-reincarnation. To say nothing of the bad blood and inevitable backstab from Yomi that someone like Kurama would inevitably calculate. Idk. Always felt super weird seeing those two share a corner.
