Kinda like how Doom 2016 infused modern gunplay with a more hardcore 90's attitude.

The game is very polished, there's a ton of skill trees and a robust selection of weaponry, and you're getting new powers all the time. The sound effects are also very chunky and satisfying.

It's reminiscent of Borderlands to a degree, but I would characterise it as being less of a derivative, bland mess in the grand scheme of things than a game like Far Cry: New Dawn.

80/80

He put out a cover album called Some Guys where he covered a bunch of really solid 70's slow jams. You've got a cover of Easy in the style of the Commodores, rather than Faith No More (which is still a solid cover ofc), you've got How Deep Is Your Love by the Bee Gees - not as good as the original, but still pretty good - and you've got classics like Everybody's Talking At Me and The Things We Do For Love. It's a really good album based on these songs alone - there are some really popular picks that ensure that anyone listening can find something they know. Like shit, I know Everybody's Talking At Me from The Simpsons, of all places. Chances are you know at least one song on this record.

But what really surprised me were the songs If You Could Read My Mind and Same Old Lang Syne. Never heard them before listening to this cover album.

These songs are some of the most tender shit I've heard in my life. One of them is from the perspective of a guy going through a divorce. The similes used, and the gentle vocals layered over the swelling instrumentation, is some of the rawest shit ever.

And the song Same Old Lang Syne appeals to me on a whole other level - it's so "me" it hurts. I'm a sucker for like friends to lovers concepts, nostalgia, fluffy chance meetings - and this song delivers on that in spades. Dude runs into an old girlfriend at the supermarket when he's home for Christmas, and they decide to go out and have a drink - but the bars are all closed, so they buy a six pack of beer and drink it in her car while making toasts to the past.

A good cover album gives you something you want - a song you know covered by another artist you like - and then uses that to introduce you to new music. Jonathan Coulton's album here, Some Guys, worked super well. You should listen to it.

Err she's talking about the stuff she did herself as Batwoman. They think she's Batman.

Yes. and it's not batman's fault. He is not some "credit-taking shitlord". Where is batman, anyway?

She never said it was his fault.

nah, she just said he's taking credit

People see her, they think she's Batman. She doesn't want them chalking her actions up to someone else, so she alters the costume to give herself a distinct appearance.

"I won't let him take credit for a woman's work" is a snarky line that basically says "I'm not Batman, I don't want him getting credit for my deeds because of the suit, so I'm going to make it clear who's calling the shots here".

"nah she says he's taking credit" c'mon bro this is like bottom of the barrel trolling. Anyone with a half-functioning brain can pick up what she's saying. You're better than this.

Sweet Home Alabama hit a niche when it came out, it's a bit trashy but the least you can say about it is that it's at least a little catchy and almost certainly wholly original.

But All Summer Long? That's a pandering turd of a song that plays on this lamebrain dipshit approximation of what someone's teenage years would have been like in the 70's, and the only artistic merit it has belongs to Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolves in London.

I just got a new AC adaptor for my Switch dock, I think some dipshit kid stole mine when I was over at a friend's house for dinner. And I decided to boot up Switch Online NES.

First of all - Star Soldier? That game is my shit. I had it on a 120000-in-1 plug and play console when I was a kid. But secondly, and more importantly, Donkey Kong Jr. was there. Again - 120000-in-1 plug and play console.

I think it's got better visuals, gameplay and sound effects. DK1 is alright, but Donkey Kong Jr. is just so much more fun imo. Hell, it takes a big ol' dump on Donkey Kong 3 as well - as far as 8 bit Donkey Kong goes, DK Jr. is the best.

What do you think?

The above video starts with an interview about the lead singer's song, and it goes into a conversation about his abusive stepfather. The point he makes is very pertinent and intelligent, and the song itself is very soft and sweet.

The second video is a song that's explicitly about being beaten as a five year old, by the same singer.

If the first two videos are in your ballpark, then listen to this third song right through to the end.

I can't speak for Dead Souls or whatever, but I've been replaying 4 recently and it's a very solid game. Even if Yakuza fans - of all fans, considering how the series as a whole is about as twisty as Metal Gear is at this point - regard it as a pretty subpar game for how it handles the story, the fact remains that stacked against most other games, Yakuza 4 is very polished and offers an incredible amount of content. Even Yakuza 3 in its butchered localised form is better than a lot of PS3 games from the time it was released in.

it's having kids that ends your life

then in a similar vein to weddings - why have kids? if one half of a couple wants kids and the other half doesn't, there shouldn't be an attempt to force one of them to change - same with getting married.

Folks need to start being honest with each other and with themselves about what they want in a relationship. No-one should feel obligated to get married or have kids if that's a milestone they don't see themselves being comfortable with.

Of course it's a dumb ribbing joke, but am I wrong in thinking some people take it to a weird extreme? Like you get cake toppers of people being browbeaten by their wives, or people separating the families by "prisoner" and "jailer" instead of "groom" and "bride" and shit. It's not every wedding, not even a majority, but there seems to be this really entrenched idea that marriage is a prison and people take it beyond a joke and base their reception around it.

Like there's something to be said for personalisation of your wedding and having a joke, but isn't it going a bit far at that point?

You're still immature at 16, both by the letter of the law in most respects and usually in personality as well - the only people pursuing 16 year olds in any capacity should be around 16 years old themselves. "Don't call them children" - they're still going to school, they're not old enough to drink or sign legal contracts without an adult present, and I'm pretty sure there are laws preventing 16 year olds from fucking fully fledged older adults?

Shit, most people are completely different people at 19 than when they were 16. I don't know why you're being so persistent in insisting that being sexually interested in 16 year olds is respecting their oncoming maturity. It's fucking creepy, and I think it's still considered ephebophilia depending on your age and intentions.

Nah. She was trying to make things work, to the point that she let him get away with some pretty egregious stuff because she wanted to salvage their marriage, and he shut her down every time instead of being an adult and leaving her. When the divorce proceedings finally went through, ProJared blocked her on Twitter and gave some masturbatory speech about how sad it all was and how graceful he and Heidi had taken the whole thing.

Heidi's response upon seeing this tweet gave a much different picture to what was going on, and in time personalities who had rushed to ProJared's defense abandoned ship as the situation became more fleshed out. PBG, one of ProJared's longtime friends irl, came in defending ProJared and came out apologizing to Heidi for acting on limited information.

I don't know ProJared's wife that well, nor do I really know ProJared either. But with how both of them have handled this, Heidi comes off as much more sympathetic. With that being said, though, this is still a very recent issue. Until enough time has passed that the parties involved are able to paint a more robust picture of what happened, without all the drama and pain that's present here at the moment, most outsiders aren't going to have a whole lot to go on.

All I know is that so far, nothing Heidi has brought to light has been outright contradicted or proven to be false. ProJared's fans, meanwhile, have roasted him for blatant attempts to solicit nudes from underage fans and send cross-dressing cosplay nudes in response. Nothing white-knight about it if everything she's said so far has been hitting the nail on the head.

Personally, I came into this to see if Holly's part of this was all true - I don't want it to be, since she's the only online personality here I care about. Still waiting on her side of the story, just for the sake of it. But I haven't liked what I've seen from her, and it's her part in this that's the most disappointing so far. Like shit man, she was married to Ross for years. This sucks.

There's a platform here to talk about the plight of aged care workers. My sister worked with dementia patients for a number of years while struggling with undiagnosed BPD, and it made living with her hell - she went through some shit. You've also got nurses and aged care workers working 12+ hour days, and their position only grows more tumultuous and unsustainable as funding gets cut from hospitals, or as hospitals try to cut their overnight staff to a skeleton crew in order to save money.

I think it's inappropriate to hijack a thread like this to talk about it, though - because by emphasising these issues in relation to this news story, it comes across very heavily as you siding with the sick fucks hitting elderly patients with belts. And I think it goes without saying that this shit isn't fucking okay.

TopicExplain pandering
MrMallard
05/12/19 3:54:38 PM
#38
Pandering is appealing to an aspect of an IP's fanbase in a way that displaces core aspects of the work or otherwise cheapens the product. It's usually a cheap way to get attention and make some money from a bunch of slack-jawed idiots.

Keep in mind that I don't think focusing on a female character in a series that has traditionally had a masculine headlining act, or casting a non-white person to lead a new show or movie in a series that has only had white protagonists in the past, is in itself pandering. 9/10 "urr pandering!!! its wrong and bad and ruining everything I ever loved!!" reactions on this front are a bunch of baby back bitches being salty. Rather, when I think of pandering, I think of bland boner material geared to the lowest common denominator and sudden swerves into blood, guts and shock factor in order to market something as "darker and edgier" as the competition.

Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball is pandering to a bunch of brain-dead jerk-offs who are too fragile and pathetic to look up rule 34 of their favorite girls - they'd rather pay for officially licensed cheesecake material. Fire Emblem appeals to the same shit-for-brains pervert masses with their heavy petting minigame. Any tiddy figurine of your favorite anime is pandering, plain and simple.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is apparently a very good game - but the game's swerve into blood, tits and pointless cusses was an attempt to chase an M rating for fun and profit. Same with Jak 2, ti a less extreme level, and even Ratchet: Deadlocked. I like at least one of these games a lot, but the fact stands that they took their series' in drastically different directions to capitalise on a maturing games market, where the zeitgeist had shifted towards mature themes and violence in a matter of years. It was a shift to pander to "mature" teens who wanted more mature content.

The latter can be true as well - taking a gritty property like RoboCop and gearing him towards kids, or watering your violent movie franchise down into all-ages slop to lower the barrier of entry for potential movie-goers.

Having two gay Marvel superheroes isn't pandering in itself, but with the Russo brothers announcing this grand gesture of unity at least one year before said superheroes will ever grace the big screen, the impact of such a decision is cheapened. They're milking the "wokeness" of it for e-peen points before the characters have gotten out of the gate. Same with the throwaway gay character from Endgame - their one isolated scene in the movie can just be gutted out for the Chinese release, and it passes with no fanfare. Having gay characters isn't pandering on its own, but if the statement lacks substance in the first place and is just there to court a reaction, then it kinda is.

A couple years back when I was doing some work at a local movie theatre, this redpill weeb guy came into the team and we had a bit of a chat about anime. I was mostly getting out of anime at the time, and even when I liked it, I had different tastes to him - he held this show up as like one of the best shows he's ever seen, and it sounded like some absolute horseshit.

It's like everyone expresses these magical powers at a certain age, and everyone has different powers - with the protagonist's power being that he could slow time down to a stop and move out of the way of bullets and get the advantage on his enemies.

Is that - a generic "fantasy future warzone magic power" show where the protagonist has Gary Stu powers - an isekai show?

As far as the messaging goes: if you're still doing this shit in your twenties, you're an asshole. If you're still doing this shit in your thirties, you're a lost cause. Dude brought this on himself.

Call this counter-action by the reviewer petulant and just as/more immature as what the guy did, if you want. But literally all he had to do to avoid this outcome is not call her a c-word and a bitch or tell to shut her mouth. If he was dead set on being a shitstain, he could have used an alt on the Gamespot forums, or he could have made a burner Twitter account to @ her the abuse. But not only was he dead set on being a shitstain, he was so fixated on the idea of getting a direct line to this reviewer that he messaged her on his public facebook profile with his full name, face and friends list including his mother.

There isn't a redeemable thing about this guy - he has well and truly brought this upon himself. He talked shit, so he got hit. Easy as that.

I know this guy at LucasArts, he says they're looking for hands - in 15 years I'll be throwing back beers, with my feet in the sand.

Just hit the second save point, gonna call it a night. My garbo controller is making the game a bit of a pain in the ass, but I'm kinda digging the game so far.

Small detail, but I have to say - I love how they've done the map. Like I'm barely even here yet, so much of the map has been greyed out. It promises a pretty big adventure.

One thing that the first game did really well is the sense of progression. Each save point you hit would increase your completion percentage by 2-4%, so at the end of a single session you had a solid, tangible measure of progress. Eventually you're playing to hit targets, like "okay, I'm at 38% - let's get up to 50% completion!" The real, measurable progress you made was a driving force for you to keep playing.

This map looks like it's going to be the same thing. Right now I'm only in the bottom corner of the map. There's a lot of really solid, defined artwork on this map that's been greyed out - I'm gonna get there eventually. And near the end of the game, I'm gonna be honing in on that last little patch of grey, anticipating the end of the game.

Good shit, Warrior Within. Hopefully you live up to my expectations after all.

I got all the hidden fountains last game without a guide - is this game's health upgrades on the same level?

They are also hidden fountains I believe. Or maybe they're something you stick your sword into, I can't remember which was WW and which was TTT. But they're identical in all other ways.

They're just much more important because they have a huge effect on the end game and backtracking through portals to a previous area is risky for your game save.

Damn. I'm playing the remaster, I would hope that they fixed that for the HD ports. But the ports are already kinda... lacking in polish, in certain respects. so I mean W/E.

There's a trophy for playing on each difficulty mode, if I can be bothered to do so I can run through this on Easy when I'm done with Normal. That can be the completion run.

I really feel like they criminally mismanaged that whole franchise. It went from being like instantly beloved critically and amongst the gaming public to being met with a collective shrug by the time #3 rolled around

There's a video by the channel GVMERS, they did a 40 minute documentary on the entire series - from the 2D computer game to the Forgotten Sands. Something they brought up is that they were working on a prototype where you would play as a bodyguard to a much younger Prince, and your moveset would be more stealthy and graceful. They were gonna call it Prince of Persia: Assassin.

You know where I'm going with this - they turned it into Assassin's Creed. Queue Ubisoft competing with Activision and EA as a publisher, in the big boy leagues.

One theory that the GVMERS video posits is that Ubisoft has much more creative control over Assassin's Creed, and they can pimp it out as much as they like without having to subscribe to one creative vision. They don't have to pay royalties, or risk backlash for messing with a long-running, storied franchise like Prince of Persia. So PoP, at least theoretically, is languishing because Ubisoft ended up getting a golden ticket in the form of Assassin's Creed.

Just wanna say separate from all that - my controller is a bootleg piece of shit, and the left stick tends to stick to the right and drift and stuff. Games are getting harder to play with it, just like my Joy-Con. God I hate this shit.

Okay, so I'm on the island and I've gotten to try out the parkour stuff a little bit. I'll admit, it already feels a lot better than Sands of Time on that front.

I don't doubt that shit is gonna be all sorts of obnoxious, especially since they've fixed the broken combat system and added in like combos and shit - I don't want to get bogged down in a bunch of shitty fights, I wanna run on walls and jump around and shit. Maybe Prince of Persia 2008 would be a better fit for me? Apparently it didn't do so well, but the little I've heard of it sounds like it's right up my alley.
