I really liked Sands of Time. It only took me 3 years to properly appreciate it.

Now let's get into some edgelord bullshit, lmao. I played a demo for this game when I was a kid, and it's wild - especially after the very earnest and straightforward first game.

I personally think it's the best one, gameplay wise.

Goddamn, that loading screen takes me back to my PS2 demo days. I had like every one of those old demo discs.

Oh boy, listen to that metal on the title screen lmao

Ugh, what is this main menu?! It's all curved and shit!

Dat ass though!!

So I was hoping that the remastered cutscenes would look better in this game than they did in Sands of Time. Nope, they're still grainy and shitty compared to the gameplay.

I hated the combat in Sands of Time, but I really loved the sense of progression and the puzzle-solving was fantastic. I think it only worked so well because the parkour moves worked as well as they did, and because they seemed to prioritise that puzzle-solving gameplay over the combat.

Put pressure switches and time gates into a game like Jak and Daxter or whatever where you've got a bunch of cool, varied gameplay - it's a distraction. Make a game that puts that content first and makes it the primary experience in a castle full of danger and intrigue? Well, I found out over the last couple of weeks that I can fuck with that. As long as Warrior Within keeps a focus on the wall-running and environmental puzzle-solving, then I can see myself liking it.

Sands of Time is one of my favorite games ever.

I wasn't a big fan of its sequels, though.

Warrior Within is one of my favorite games of all time.

It's an extremely solid game, all you have to do is get past a couple things: the instrumental Godsmack parts and the incessant anger groans during combat. Otherwise, the dark atmosphere is appreciated and done well.

What are time portals?

Okay, just got to the combat tutorial and it's looking like a slog.

I played Sands of Time 3 years ago for half an hour, hated it and forgot about it - then I played it recently and I had a blast. I'll give Warrior Within the benefit of the doubt. But it looks like the Jak 2 to SoT's Jak and Daxter, and I've always preferred Jak and Daxter.

You'll figure it out, they're a pivotal gameplay device that handle level progression.

Also look up all the health upgrade locations and make sure you don't miss any. This is how you get the "alternate" ending which is the better/canon ending.

Okay, so Warrior Within's opening level is the demo that I played as a kid. Everything from the cutscenes to the enemies pain cries to the metal music out of nowhere is a huge nostalgia trip for me.

Oh man, and I get to fight Metal Thong Bikini Girl as well!

I got all the hidden fountains last game without a guide - is this game's health upgrades on the same level?

Also:

"You bitch!"

This game is very "ow the edge", like holy shit.

They are also hidden fountains I believe. Or maybe they're something you stick your sword into, I can't remember which was WW and which was TTT. But they're identical in all other ways.

They're just much more important because they have a huge effect on the end game and backtracking through portals to a previous area is risky for your game save.

Okay, so I'm on the island and I've gotten to try out the parkour stuff a little bit. I'll admit, it already feels a lot better than Sands of Time on that front.

I don't doubt that shit is gonna be all sorts of obnoxious, especially since they've fixed the broken combat system and added in like combos and shit - I don't want to get bogged down in a bunch of shitty fights, I wanna run on walls and jump around and shit. Maybe Prince of Persia 2008 would be a better fit for me? Apparently it didn't do so well, but the little I've heard of it sounds like it's right up my alley.

I can't finish Warrior Within. I have anxiety issues and every time "it" shows up, I freak out and can't finish. I remember trying to cross this one area and couldn't find the path leading to it and kept jumping off on accident.

Damn. I'm playing the remaster, I would hope that they fixed that for the HD ports. But the ports are already kinda... lacking in polish, in certain respects. so I mean W/E.

There's a trophy for playing on each difficulty mode, if I can be bothered to do so I can run through this on Easy when I'm done with Normal. That can be the completion run.

There's a video by the channel GVMERS, they did a 40 minute documentary on the entire series - from the 2D computer game to the Forgotten Sands. Something they brought up is that they were working on a prototype where you would play as a bodyguard to a much younger Prince, and your moveset would be more stealthy and graceful. They were gonna call it Prince of Persia: Assassin.

You know where I'm going with this - they turned it into Assassin's Creed. Queue Ubisoft competing with Activision and EA as a publisher, in the big boy leagues.

One theory that the GVMERS video posits is that Ubisoft has much more creative control over Assassin's Creed, and they can pimp it out as much as they like without having to subscribe to one creative vision. They don't have to pay royalties, or risk backlash for messing with a long-running, storied franchise like Prince of Persia. So PoP, at least theoretically, is languishing because Ubisoft ended up getting a golden ticket in the form of Assassin's Creed.

Just wanna say separate from all that - my controller is a bootleg piece of shit, and the left stick tends to stick to the right and drift and stuff. Games are getting harder to play with it, just like my Joy-Con. God I hate this shit.

PoP: The Two Thrones is where they went with the stealth/assassin thing first, and then translated that into Assassin's Creed. Or more likely they were more interested in AC during the development of TTT and used it as a test bed for these ideas and just wanted to quickly wrap up the series and move on.

Small detail, but I have to say - I love how they've done the map. Like I'm barely even here yet, so much of the map has been greyed out. It promises a pretty big adventure.

One thing that the first game did really well is the sense of progression. Each save point you hit would increase your completion percentage by 2-4%, so at the end of a single session you had a solid, tangible measure of progress. Eventually you're playing to hit targets, like "okay, I'm at 38% - let's get up to 50% completion!" The real, measurable progress you made was a driving force for you to keep playing.

This map looks like it's going to be the same thing. Right now I'm only in the bottom corner of the map. There's a lot of really solid, defined artwork on this map that's been greyed out - I'm gonna get there eventually. And near the end of the game, I'm gonna be honing in on that last little patch of grey, anticipating the end of the game.

Good shit, Warrior Within. Hopefully you live up to my expectations after all.
