TopicUsing gay as an insult

There's only one case I can imagine where you could use the word gay as an insult innocuously. If we're talking about somebody (a child maybe) who has no idea what the word gay means and only knows it as a synonym of "bad" because that's how they've heard other people use it. Then I'd agree that is an instance where somebody is using it as an insult without any intention of associating it with its main usage.

For people who DO know what it means to be gay, that's not the case. If you know what the word means, you can't divorce it of that meaning when you use it to try to insult somebody. When used as an insult it inherently draws on bigotry for its power to hurt.
I feel like you're putting way too much weight on it. I'd agree that a gay person would be justified in being offended regardless of context, but I disagree that it inherently carries ill intent. I feel that's the same with the r-word. I feel it's much divorced from the connotation of people on the spectrum.

When people say "that's gay" as a way to try to mock something or express that they don't like it, it's inherently disrespecting gay people by equating the word gay with bad things. They are literally calling something gay, you can't act like there's no correlation with gay people.

Just because somebody uses gay as an insult doesn't inherently make them a homophobe, but at best it means they're willing to dabble in homophobia to insult somebody.
It's entirely possible to use a word and have absolutely no intention of associating it with the root definition. It doesn't make the context of the root definition disappear entirely, which is why I'd never say "it's not offensive, full stop," but the intended context does not need to be purposely offensive. It also doesn't take away from the chunk of people that do use it in a purposely offensive manner. My whole point is that it's impossible to make a single judgement call on the topic.

Can you give an example of using gay as an insult that is not inherently disrespectful to gay people?
"That's gay" with no particular emphasis on the correlation to gay people. As I said, it will offend some people regardless of intentions behind it. It's not the kind of speech I'd use, but people have and will use it in such a manner. I would agree it's juvenile, but it doesn't make someone a horrible person either.

I feel it's sort of like the r-word. There are purposely offensive applications and applications that have evolved away from the actual definition of the word. Both are certainly offensive to certain people regardless of context, but trying to act as the moral arbiters of speech seems pretty frivolous at the end of the day.

Humans naturally form in groups and out groups. Skin color is the easiest way to judge, so that's been a big thing for a long time now. But even without that, you have religion, where you're from, what you believe, political opinions, sexuality etc. We'd naturally find ways of being shitty to each other even if everyone had the same skin color.

If she was asking you to go in a chaperone position, it'd make sense, but it otherwise sounds like she thinks you or your sister would enjoy having the other around at an event for children. That just seems like a misguided attempt at family time. It would make more sense to go out somewhere after the event.

Cool. When are you gonna answer the question I asked about what you think we should do about racial "natural advantages"?

That's always a nonsensical take. Transwomen are transwomen. They are not "women born with a natural advantage over other women." They are male-bodied individuals who make a purposeful transition to their desired body state out of mental health concerns. I'm not of the "they're men" camp, but they also do not just fit completely into all the roles of biological women.

The demographics of the userbase don't matter. It matters what the userbase wants to see representing the company. I'd imagine the majority of fat people don't want to see similarly fat people on a walkway. Only the people who make being fat a personality trait care.

What exactly are you trying to say? Just because you view something as a major issue locally does not make it major elsewhere. Ten murders in a place with a 0.00 murder rate per 100k would be a big deal for them, but not for you.

It's probably a problem for a Canadian city, but it's still a minor problem relative to places with high gang activity like the US. Even if this gang violence caused murders to spike by 1000%, which I'm certain is not the case, you're still looking at only 150 murders in one city.

Bro. I live two hours from Vancouver. Vancouver Police have a dedicated gang task force. Stop being ignorant.
There being a problem does not make it a major problem, at least relative to the rest of the world. This hypothetical would not cause untold chaos in a place that had 15 murders in 2018.

I'm pretty sure the total murders in Canada in a yearly basis is equal to a single US state, so they certainly could not have anything I'd quality as "major" gang issues. Do such a thing in the US, and I'm sure gang related murders would spike like 10,000%. The percentage for Canada would certainly not be so great even if you did both at a per capita rate.

It would definitely spike murders way up, but I doubt it would affect daily life that much. The number of people with a natural impetus to murder is definitely very low. It would affect any area with gang violence the most. I really can't imagine Canada with a major gang violence problem.

What do you mean from a marketing perspective?
If the point is to get PR for sales, then I doubt this is going to bring in any. It may even turn people away, regardless if it's from pure bigotry or simply having little interest in a narrative involving a transperson. It could just be they want to explore characterization that hasn't been explored in a mainstream game regardless of whether it's positive or negative for sales, which is perfectly fine.

11/14/19 4:38:43 PM

I think the biggest issue is trying to use it on the level of individuals in the first place. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying such things based on averages. The second someone says "you have white privilege" or "your white privilege", they've lost the plot. No individual has inherent privlages. It all depends on where they live and who they live with. The idea of mass privilege comes from inspecting a large amount of cases where individuals of one particular grouping of people have certain experiences or don't have certain experiances. But that's just that, an average.
