That is fucking terrifying and super open to abuse.

It is.

But "Think of the children and terrorists!" won out in the end, and with conservatives in power they've been tightening their grip on the internet to try and match China in terms of control.

As I posted in another topic on the politics board, William Barr and officials from the UK and Australia have written an open letter opposing Facebook's plan to implement end-to-end encryption claiming it will harm their ability to investigate child abuse and terrorism. An agreement has also been reached under the CLOUD Act that will allow the UK to request data directly from tech companies in the US without going through the courts. Although the CLOUD Act doesn't require that the data they gather be shared with US law enforcement, it doesn't prevent it either. The CLOUD Act is nothing but an end run around the 4th Amendment.

Piece by piece, the same garbage that the UK and Australia have passed will become a reality here too.

I think that kind of thing is honestly scary. The police watching citizen internet use closely enough to come over and visit because you watched a (completely legal, I'm assuming) Youtube video is deeply disturbing. Also, not to start the whole debate up again, I happen to find it ridiculous that the UK considers even very offensive drawn porn (not based on real people, of course) to be illegal in the first place. A complete waste of police time and an affront to civil liberties.

darkmaian23

The theory of multiple kinds of intelligence might be popular, but there is no empirical evidence for it. Trump speaks using a limited vocabulary of simple words. Most of his speeches are full of incomprehensible sentence fragments that don't flow together. When he is asked specific questions in interviews, he wanders around, speaks vaguely, and never gives any indication he understands anything or could provide a definite answer if forced to.

People like to claim that this is all an act, but given the contents of the recently released call memo--a memo, NOT a transcript, so a staffer could have and probably did edit it--isn't much better than what we see him give us in public so that's how he talks in private too. Being awkward, hesitant, or ineffective when communicating can be a public speaking problem. Being unable to complete a complex thought, use large words, or speak in complete sentences that make sense is an intelligence problem.

Winning the presidency doesn't take much in the way of intelligence (unfortunately). In the first place, only existing politicians or the wealthy and well-connected have a shot. Smart, caring visionaries not from the 1% need not apply. Next up in his favor was party. The democrats had held the presidency for 8 years with Obama, and typically that's about as long as one party can last before things flip. Donald Trump is a hugely recognizable figure so he didn't have to work to get people to remember him. The fact that Donald Trump is a billionaire (never mind his huge inheritance of life of privilege) led a lot of people to think he'd be able to run the government better than a career politician, never mind that the government isn't a business. He campaigned on the idea of making America great again, and nostalgia is a powerful force. And he played on racism and xenophobia, which like it or not, resonates with a ton of people too.

People in my area all voted for Trump, and to hear them tell it, it's simply because he is an old white businessman with a lot of money. Every time he says or does something stupid, they go "well, Trump has a lot of money and experience, so..." and deflect whatever the problem is. I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but for some of my relatives, the fact that the man can't form complex thoughts was a boon too. Most votes aren't very smart. They don't understand why the world has to be so complicated and don't want it to be complicated. So promises that the world will be like it used to be and everything will work out with no details suits them just fine. As long as they can pick those details out of the word salad, nothing else matters.

Do these guidelines have any weight behind them? The UN has been trying to get nations to ban lewd comics of all kinds since the dawn of time, and they always get smacked down. The last attempt--which I think was discussed around 6 months ago--was completely and utterly ridiculous, and they got a flood of hate mail telling them so.

I'm not seeing this being reported on any major tech news or anime sites. What the UN was originally trying to do would have banned whole swaths of fiction, including popular books, that have nothing to do with lolis, so if that gained any real power I'd expect to hear about it somewhere other than GameFAQs. Is this something else?

Does society feel that?

Let's discuss the concept of a criminal owing society a debt, which is what I think you are talking about. The law is written by out of touch, wealthy, mostly white old men for one of three reasons: to enrich them, to enrich their donors, or to create a public perception of some kind of moral stance they think they can sell to get more votes. There is no moral or intellectual minimum required to be a lawmaker, and even if they pass blatantly shitty laws that nobody but the elite want (like Australia's anti-encryption legislation) there is nothing society at large can do about it.

So a person who has violated the law may not have done anything immoral, nor has he necessarily done anything with which society would disagree. But there can also be injustice even if someone has committed a a serious crime that most people would agree is immoral. Mandatory minimum sentences--some very harsh--exist for a lot of crimes, and the for-profit prison industry lobbies continually for them to be increased to benefit their businesses.

You might have been convicted under a nonsensical immoral law that society doesn't want, and you might have been given an unjust and disproportionate punishment that society doesn't agree with. There is one other thing that might have happened to you: you might never have gotten a trial. Around 90% of criminal cases in the United States are settled out of court using a plea bargain. Plenty of innocent people plead guilty to a crime they didn't commit because prosecutors threaten to add all kinds of charges if they make them go to trial, and most people can't afford real representation. Which would you rather take? 5 years in prison where you can see your kid graduate, or the possibility of getting 20 or more on trumped up charges, where a public defender would be your only hope? Prosecutors have a budget from the state. You might not have done it, but do you have the money to hire someone to convince the jury of that? Or the money to hire expert witnesses so that you get a fair shake? Most people don't.

I absolutely love Forensic Files. Some of the episodes are hilarious though. Like, was that shitty plot the best you could come with? And then there is the ridiculously bad acting on the part of perpetrators during police interviews. Have you seen the one where the husband claimed his wife fell down the stairs because of her shoes? Devoid of emotion: "Those damn SHOES!". At least try to see affected. I nearly died from laughter.

Maybe it's just because you know they are guilty because you watching Forensic Files, but I find a lot of the cases where a killer went free for years disturbing because guilt seems kind of obvious.

Gods can't use it (see: Skyward Sword), and to my knowledge there has never been a suggestion that the Triforce can ever serve as a judge of character. It's not like the Triforce of Power looked at Ganondorf and said "nah bro, you're evil". He was able to do whatever he wanted with the portion of the Triforce he was able to obtain.

DarkRoast posted...
It's not that there aren't good chiropractors. It's that Chiropractic itself is bullshit, and anything efficacious they do is not actually core Chiropractic.

This. I knew someone who studied chiropractic, and they came out thinking they could do things like change the orientation of a baby by manipulating the mother's spine. The theory behind chiropractic is complete nonsense. Nobody in my entire family and friend group has ever seen one who wasn't a quack. If they do something right, it has nothing to do with their formal (non-medical) training.

Horrible doctors exist, and there is such a thing as a bad visit to see a good doctor, but no matter what, doctors actually have real treatments to offer. They might not end up working, but they were based in reality and not magic spine fantasy land.

When a chiropractor actually does something to your spine or neck, there is a very real chance they could hurt you. There is a reason so many of them barely touch you despite making bold claims. We had a guy in town once that had this hilarious device that he would hold over your back that made clicking noises. I forget what rationale he used to justify the noisemaker, but he would barely touch anyone. Especially if you looked old or seemed to have an obvious physical condition.

As for doctors send you to chiropractors, it's often something people ask for and most of them don't do anything anyway. If some hospital started installing Chiropractors, it would be purely to make money. It doesn't matter to the people at the top whether or not it works. I've seen signs up for Integrative Medicine. None of the staff think it works, but it gets people interested and excited. Alternative medicine is really popular right now, and patients like to see that their beliefs are taken seriously even if they aren't.
