States should have full control over their election process. If security is an actual problem, public outcry within the state tends to address it. The hanging chat issue of the 2000 election, for instance, pushed for the discontinuation of manual punch systems (granted, electronic systems are theoretically *more* prone to fraudulent influence)

WastelandCowboy posted...
The idea would be that no state has no more control over how they elect their officials than another state to prevent the possibility of anything that could influence or change the results of an election, which everyone should be against, anyway.

Putting everything in the hands of the Feds just means that when things fail, they fail more spectacularly. Any corruption -- and there will always be some amount of corruption -- then impacts every state instead of just a few.

The Rocket event is kinda neat for having added FOUR new shinies. Most events only add one or two.

Still it's nothing more than selfishness to want a kid that the other doesn't regardless.

Just like it's selfish for that kid to want to be alive, right? >_> At any rate, if a man can't compel a woman to have an abort his child then he's being deprived of his reproductive rights. The death penalty is frequently applied to remorseful people. More importantly, murder -- the crime most frequently associated with the death penalty -- has the lowest recidivism rate so, out of all the crimes, that's the MOST likely to be rehabilitated. Something like sex offenders have an abyssmally low rehab rate, unless the offender chooses something like chemical castration.

She used to be the principal at Lawton Elementary School for 5 years before being placed on admin leave in April and then having to resign.

I mean there has to be a reason. If she just gets placed on administrative leave out of nowhere she is fully in her grounds to sue and I expect her to easily win.

Problem is the cries of racism and discrimination scream "there is more to this story" this claim doesn't need to be made. The claim does not assist with her case. It's unrelated to unjust termination, you don't need to come up with ideas as to why they fired you, you just need to say "they fired me".

So the fact that she is saying these claims makes it likely something happened, and her being banned from the school makes that suspicion even stronger.

Oh yea here we go.

But when Blick was asked to be placed on administrative leave May 1, rumors of a far different nature were swirling around the school district. The district was investigating claims that a custodian at Lawton Elementary School, where Blick was principal at the time, had stolen $25,000 from the district through over-billing.

Sounds like she was approving fraudulent bills using her position.

Somebody likely wouldn't be banned from entering the school over allegations of fraud and, more importantly, the fact that overbilling happened on her watch doesn't automatically make her complicit in the overbilling as you seem to suggest. As for the "rumors," I can't find any information regarding the investigation or any outcomes, which would be pretty pertinent given the circumstances.

(Continued)

Pikachu - One of Nintendo's biggest names and most successful properties. He's iconic enough that he's recognized by non-gamers thanks to the anime and other non-gaming properties. The success of Pokemon also had a major impact on gaming for a while but... Pokemon hasn't had the same level of influence as something like Street Fighter and, despite being the Pokemon mascot, he's taken a bit of a backseat in the games.

Master Chief - Obligatory mention because Halo is a major franchise. However, he's nowhere near as big a name as other characters. He might warrant a spot on a trendier, post-2000s gaming Rushmore.

Kratos - Obligatory mention because GoW is a major franchise. Situation is identical to Master Chief.

Nathan Drake - Kratos - Obligatory mention because Uncharted is a major franchise (and a personal favorite). Situation is identical to Master Chief and Kratos.

Samus Aran - Major Nintendo character and has had a few incredible games, but nowhere near big enough.

Lara Croft Kind of a harder one because she underwent a near-total character design revamp whereas everybody else on this list has remained relatively consistent (excluding spinoff versions of characters, most specifically Mega Man). She's had THREE major films to date but, despite that, I'm still not sure that she's anywhere near as iconic as some of the other contenders who are more likely to be recognized by just about anyway.

Trying to think who else I might be missing. Granted, I'm deliberately omitting a few higher-profile characters like Cloud just because they're not in as many games.

tbh, it's a hard thing to put together. Mario is an absolute given, but nobody else really ranks on that same level. The second problem is that it's tough to put together a gaming Mount Rushmore and not have it be Mount Nintendo, since Nintendo characters tend to be far more prominent than their competitors.

Here are a few quick thoughts on possible contenders:

Donkey Kong - Iconic and historic. A major name from the arcade era who went on to have success on the SNES... but hasn't had the same impact since then.

Pac-Man - Similar to DK, he's an older name and has an iconic, recognizable design... but hasn't had as much going for him lately. Following the Atari bankruptcy and asset purchase, he's been in an array of budget titles that have done more harm than good.

Link - The protagonist from one of my favorite gaming franchises and one of Nintendo's heaviest hitters. Some of his games are ranked among the greatest of all time, which makes him a strong candidate for inclusion... but he's more of a characters that gamers would know and a lot of non-gamers wouldn't necessarily recognize. That said, he's had a good number of games and maintained relevancy (even if his titles release a little too slowly) which makes him a strong contender.

Mega Man - Capcom's occasional mascot who has an iconic look and a good deal of history. Has had a lot of neat spin-off franchises and, in many ways, is a good parallel to Mario. However, Capcom has provided sporadic support for him, both in terms of games and using other characters (Captain Commando, Ryu) as company mascots at times. Plus MML3 never happened. Just saying.

Sonic - Sega's mascot, who has an iconic look and a good deal of history. His fate has kinda risen and fallen with Sega. Once a strong competitor to Nintendo, the company's failure with the Saturn and Dreamcast caused it to exit the console industry and, quite honestly, the quality of Sonic games really started to die around that same time. Titles like Sonic 2006 are a good argument against his inclusion.

L-Block - Former greatest gaming character winner and has an iconic, instantly recognizable design. While I bring him up for the novelty, I don't consider him a serious contender, although he'd make for a more interesting addition to Mount Gamemore.

Ryu (Street Fighter) - While I'm more of a Ken Masters fan, Ryu is probably the most iconic of the major Street Fighter characters. Street Fighter has history and influence, but the potential knock against Ryu is that he's not as instantly recognizable to non-gamers. However, I consider him a worthy choice and a character I wouldn't really question if somebody used him on their list.

Scorpion (Mortal Kombat) - I've never held MK in as high esteem as Street Fighter, but it's a major fighting franchise and, of the characters, Scorpion might be the most iconic despite usually not being a hero. He's got a great character design, although I'm not sure how recognizable he might be to non-gamers.

However, unless I have some accounts I set up and forgot about, it might mean that I'll be away from the geek topic until I set up the new accounts and get them enough karma to access PotD because I'm pretty sure both Broken Zeus & Taily Po are going to get hit because I responded to people -- including one mod -- who rubbed in the fact I got modded and apparently complaining about being modded here is grounds for modding. This whole new system is fucking insane.

At any rate, my previous name suggestions are probably all I've got (unless maybe we could do Young Geekenstein or Young Frankengeek: The Musical).

And, honestly, my free time will probably be tied up anyway for a few days. My primary/home laptop seems like it's running on borrowed time since nothing is working right and the one I usually bring with me everywhere is struggling to keep up because I'm using it for everything instead of breaking stuff between both. I probably need to buy a new laptop (or see if somebody is looking to get rid of an old one... or maybe try to figure out how to reformat that old all-in-one unit I picked up a while ago). Of course, all of those are really questions for a *nerd* topic rather than a geek topic; although I will ask for the crew's opinion on refurbished pcs/laptops. I'm just kinda wondering if it's worth risking saving a bit of money there (even if it's first-party), both from the previous issues and whatever malware could be hidden.

Which brings me to Part B of what's going to tie me up -- both migrating content from the old laptop and going through my super-large Notepad file. I figured I'd take this time to extract useful content from it, be it novel/story ideas, game ideas, etc. I spent a good chunk of the evening looking through it so far and I'm maybe 20% through it so far and this initial run-through I'm just grabbing content pertaining to a series of fantasy novels I was toying around with.

Young Frankenstein is solid gold

Yes

Movie aside, I should mention that I absolutely love the OBC recording for the musical.

Hola! I'm sort of new to this part of the world. Been on an extended siesta ever since my people were butchered by crazed colonists looking for gold. Took a bit of a toll on my mental state...

Anyway, my question is kind of simple: How do I get better matches on Tinder?

Damn, that's a good grab. Would have taken that name myself if I had known it was open.

Thinks Thor is Greek

I think you read that wrong

Time to get my Indra account ready...

I think you're not reading it right. He specifically said "the other electrically themed greek deity around here." Thor is not Greek.

I'm so far behind I feel like I can't catch up now. (I think the next movie I need to watch is Thor Ragnarok). I guess I'll leave it all for something to do on vacation time.

Thor Ragnarok was pretty fun. The pacing was waaaaaay disjointed, though. The whole movie feels like the Doctor Strange scene.
