Because she wants to be in jury duty or something. She's made various post and topics about it.

afaik, she knows nothing about it because she's only wanted to serve. She was calling other people lucky for having been inconvenienced.

And they didn't give me a free lunch. afaik, had I been selected, I would still have to pay for my own food. No drinks either, just a water foundation. Granted, it was a federal courthouse so if you're doing something for your city it could be nicer.

I didn't get free food when I served. It may vary by city or something though.

I still remember when I was walking over to the mall nearby for lunch; a guy pulled over and asked if I wanted to go to eat somewhere. I said sure and hopped in his truck, fairly sure it was one of the jurors - but I suck with faces and wasn't entirely sure. I could have easily gotten killed.

I don't know why you're so excited. Jury duty pay is typically way less than minimum wage and is considered taxable income. Unless you're currently unemployed, you're more than likely taking a sizable hourly pay cut.

Jury duty sounds scary and creepy. I think they dont even pay you the first day you go, and you have to be prepared to stay the whole day. But then again, you might get dismissed early. Also, dont they only give you like $15 or $20 a day no? I guess thats enough to keep you fed.

You know, the public often complains about various stupid decisions by the justice system, but it's basically making all its decisions by relying on the opinions of people who were too stupid to get out of jury duty. Perhaps there is a flaw in this somewhere.

That's not actually true. I got forced onto the jury duty rolls when I renewed my driver's license, because that's one of the four ways NJ taps people for it.

I forget all four, but I do remember voter registration was one, license was another, and I think something like home ownership/property tax records was a third.

I get summoned for jury duty like every odd year; it's like clockwork! The farthest I made it was to the courtroom where the judge gives a very brief overview of the case. She said the trial would last about 4 months, and I couldn't do that since I was in school at the time. She let me go with no questions asked.

Every other time it was either I didn't have to show up or I sat in a room for an hour with a bunch of other people.

You get paid, but I heard it's crappy pay. Don't know about food, though...

I know my BF got called for it. But wasn't in town and never went to the thing.

I use to never get called for it. They said it was because I was in the military. Like less than half a year after I got out, I got called for it. But I also left town around that time to go halfway across the country and missed it. Haven't been called for it since... But would mostly likely say I had to do military stuff. And will probably be almost active again soon...

I have always had my employer send a letter saying I wouldn't be paid for those lost days. It qualifies as a financial hardship and I never had to go. Then I just ignored them. Well, not really ignored. Procrastinated and forgot until it was too late. Three in a row. Maybe I'll take care of the next one.

They just send you a check I think? Idk. I know if you get paid by your job to do jury duty sometimes they reduce your pay by the amount you got paid to do jury duty.

Dunno how it is where you live, but here the stipend is atrociously bad (though many companies will comp you for time spent on jury duty up to a certain point - YMMV, depending on where you work) and IIRC they will only comp you for food during deliberations and even then only if it lasts more than a couple of days.

Weirdly enough, I have never been called in for jury duty despite decades of eligibility.

Yeah jury duty sucks. The only time I had to go I spent 4 hours in the orientation where you fill out personal information and the judge gave a brief overview of how the selection process works. Then I had to come in the next day while the lawyers decided who should be on the jury. After about 3 hours they selected who they wanted. I wasn't on the list so I was free. After a few weeks I got a check in the mail for 2.15 cents. Oh and no food.

The best way I can describe it would be like waiting in the DMV.

I know that the last time I had jury duty they sent me a check a couple of weeks afterward for $15-$17 a day (but that was in the late 1990s to early 2000s). Each time I had to go to where they held criminal trials (which is in a seedy part of Chicago) and wait until the day ended, hopeful that I wouldn't get called to serve. One time we were taken to this seedy dive near the courthouse for lunch; made my skin crawl even though the other jurors were with me. Other times I was dismissed before lunch or not given a lunch at all; so it really depends on where you're serving from.

I was supposed to serve last week but when I called in they just said not to report.

Last couple times I weaseled out by making up reasons when asked by the judge and attorneys about why I'd be a shit juror. I honestly probably wouldn't mind doing it once but it's gotta be on a case I actually feel comfortable sitting on (like a robbery or an assault). I don't want to sit on a jury for something grotesque like a rape (which was the first summons I had) or a murder.

If it hasn't changed since the last notice I got, you get $40 a day if selected for jury duty here. If you make it to the courtroom for the case overview, but aren't selected, then you get a $6 check and they give you an option to donate said check, if you don't want to deal with it.

$6/day here. Lunch on your own. If it's at the downtown courthouse, you have to pay for parking.

I never get picked. Time before last I was there from 8 to 6:30, didn't get picked. I had sushi for lunch in the federal building cafeteria near the courthouse. $7 for lunch, $10 parking, got the $6 per diem so it only cost me $11 for the day.

Got notice last month of jury duty at the suburban courthouse (free parking), filled out the online questionnaire, got notified by email the morning of my appearance that I wasn't needed, so I was excused and can't be called again for 4 years.

BTW, here, jury lists are from voter registration and drivers license.

That seems super harsh. Here in El Paso, you get a bus pass and you're allowed to park downtown for free if you've got jury duty. Also, if you happen to get a parking ticket while serving your jury duty, your summons is supposed to get your ticket nullified. Also, $6/day does not seem right at all, that's probably what those that are eliminated from the selection process get, but not those that are empaneled.

When I lived in California, I got called for jury duty as often as the law allowed (every 12 months), but I only got picked for a jury once (it was a drunk driving case, a truck driver blew a 0.08 and the legal limit for a commercial vehicle is 0.04, we were unanimous with a guilty verdict on the first vote).

I've lived in Nebraska now since 2006 and haven't been called even once.

Went to mine today

Showed up at 9, free parking a few blocks away, there's a cafe inside, told the trial could last 2-3 days if we were the 13 out of 40 to be selected for the jury. We'd get .34c per mile back on gas and $15 a day starting on day 2

Kept us seated for 2 and a half hours with HGTV on before the guy came back and said there was "unfortunately" a delay so we were done

That would've sucked possibly doing 6 hours of jury duty followed by 10 hours of work on Thursday >_<
