But in the end, what YouTube thinks doesn't seem to matter. All that matters is what the FTC thinks.

Untrue.

The problem isn't that the FTC is going to demand certain things from YouTube that YT will be forced to implement. The problem is that YouTube may (and likely will, based on prior experience) implement their own requirements which go far beyond what the FTC expects, and which will in turn be poorly managed to the point of fucking over thousands of completely innocent people.

YouTube has a history of overreacting to things, in the desperate hope that large advertisers won't pull ad revenue, and then enforcing them in the worst possible way because they're lazy and inept. And every time they go through one of these little crises, a few more content providers wind up dropping off, or being forced to turn their entire channel into a Patreon-funded system, or just switching over to something like Twitch. Which is bad for content providers, but it's also bad for the people who enjoy watching those content providers.

We're not quite at the point where everything is now completely fucked forever, but there's definitely the possibility that this could be an absolute catastrophe for tons of content creators who shouldn't even remotely be affected by it. It all really depends on whether YouTube is competent enough to actually define whether or not content is actually realistically for kids, and handles things in a way that isn't a complete clusterfuck (in spite of "clusterfuck" being the accurate description of most of their previous attempts to make the platform more family/advertiser friendly).

I don't know; many people I've seen speaking favorably about the new trailer have mentioned planning to see it now to show positive response for taking feedback.

Yes, and plenty of people praised Snakes on a Plane and talked about how they were going to see it.

And then they didn't.

It's easy to say "This looks awesome, can't wait to see it" or other things that imply you're going to watch. But when the moment comes to actually pay money and go out to a theater people suddenly don't care so much.

Trying to cultivate that sort of Internet hype train in the hopes that it will translate into business seems kind of futile. No matter how often people are willing to leap fully on board with memes, they rarely seem to follow through in any meaningful way.

The government isn't actually what you need to worry about.

The worry is that YouTube will decide to police themselves with yet another shit algorithm/bot that constantly mis-flags innocent videos while letting the actual offenders get away with terrible behavior, which is pretty much what it does now for any number of things. And that the appeals process will be broken as fuck and generally screw over content creators because that's easier to do than actually hiring competent employees who can quickly sift through moderation queues.

Courting Internet attention failed spectacularly when it came to selling tickets for Snakes on a Plane.

The funny thing about the Internet is, everyone is going to have a hyperbolic opinion about pretty much everything, but when it actually comes time to put your money where your mouth is, suddenly everyone vanishes.

For all the outrage about how terrible the first trailer was and how many people have praised the second trailer for listening to fans or improving things, I have a sneaking suspicion the movie is still going to tank hard. Because none of the people who've been posting about it are going to bother going to see it regardless.

Can a metroidvania work if you start with flight or equivalent?

What you mostly lose with flight is the platforming aspects of the average Metroidvania, so you probably have to focus more on combat mechanics to offset that. Basically, you may have to lean more into bullet hell and shump-style gameplay to compensate for the lack of jumping puzzles.

It doesn't really matter as a means of closing off access to other areas, because there are tons of other ways you can gate stuff off without relying on some sort of double jump ability to reach high areas (walls you need strength or bombs to break down, doors locked that need specific keys, stuff covered in vines or spider webs that need to be burned away, some sort of down-thrust or drill to dig down into buried areas, fire resistance to move through walls of flame or acid resistance to swim through acid pools, etc). You can look to most of the items in Zelda games for inspiration, or start with a setting and work backwards from there (hi-tech settings will tend to have tech-based solutions, etc).

I remember how people used to complain about this sort of thing, because a lot of time businesses would ask for requirements that were literally impossible to fulfill.

Like, a programming job might ask for you to have 10 years of experience coding in Java, but Java only existed for 7 years at the time. So the only way you could ever apply for that job is if you were willing to lie about your own experience.

The other complaint along those lines was that businesses would ask you to have X number of years coding in a specific language, only to hire you and ask you to completely disregard the way you used to code at previous companies, and be retrained into your new company's personal style. Meaning almost anyone would general coding experience would have been good enough for the job (since they're going to train you from the ground up anyway), and having years worth of experience in specific languages might actually be a negative (because they're going to tell you to forget everything you know anyway).

That's part of what led to the mentality for a lot of people that you should just go to every interview even if you didn't meet the stated requirements, blatantly lie to them about what experience you had, and then if you got the job you could cram your way into learning whatever languages they wanted you to use to back up your lies. Because if you were honest you were never going to get a job in the field.

Green and red. Spam wolf tokens and win.

So we're talking M:tG here? Or is "Green Mage" a class they introduced into Final Fantasy after I stopped giving a shit about the series?

In terms of FF magic, I probably go Red (or even full White) - my playstyle in most games where you can build a character without being locked into a specific class is to either make a melee bruiser who can heal, or a mostly melee-centric character with minor offensive and utility magic but a strong emphasis on healing. It's very, very rare that I play anything with anything resembling magic and my first few spells aren't healing (even in D&D, I gravitate to the Divine Soul Sorcerer, because they get Cleric spells in addition to the usual Sorcerer spells).

In Magic my first ever deck was a black/white one (built around using Pestilence and CoPs, which I called my White Plague deck), though I eventually settled into a Black/Red burn deck (which I called the Hellfire deck). In spite of that being "my thing" for like almost 20 years, I've actually recently sort of switched to a White/Red burn deck with more emphasis on healing (though I've also got a White/Black vampire deck with a couple infinite damage combos baked in).

Though in terms of the Magic setting itself, I'd almost certainly be a Blue card, or maybe a Blue/White multicolor. Because that tends to reflect how I think and strategize more than any of the other colors.

ParanoidObsessive

I actually had this issue in college, because I'm not a huge fan of soup. So I made ramen, poured off the broth, and tried to just eat the noodles (which were bland, because they don't really absorb the flavor).

So the next time I made ramen, I boiled the noodles first, then strained off all the water, and added the flavor packet directly to the noodles (so it was less of a soup, and more like Kraft Mac & Cheese). The end result being that the taste was a bit too strong and waaay too salty (because the amount and strength is made to be properly balanced with a specific amount of water).

So the next time I made it, I did the same thing, only I used half the flavor packet. It was much better.

Basically, you may have to experiment with dosage to come up with proportions that work for your personal taste, but once you figure it out you should be able to have fairly consistent ramen.

I don't get this. She gets arrested for going around topless, yet there are many nudist families who go around completely naked and that's perfectly legal.

In some places, it very much isn't.

Which is the main sticking point. Utah's generally pretty strict on anything close to "morality" or "sin" laws (sex, drugs, entertainment, etc), mainly because the state's pretty much trapped in the iron claw of the Mormons. If any state in the US was going to go after a woman for being topless in front of non-relative minors, Utah's a pretty likely bet.

Though there's also a distinction to be made between "legal" and "illegal, but most people don't care and the law is hardly enforced." There are still plenty of morality laws on the books in various states that are never really enforced (like the fact that it's technically illegal to swear in public in Mississippi), but are still technically illegal. And that's even before we get into the really weird laws like "It's illegal to cross state lines with a duck on your head" or "It's illegal to fall asleep with your shoes on".

Doing the math, the exact center of a human in all dimensions would be somewhere just behind the mons pubis. So in that case the direct center of my being would probably be the ligament that keeps my dick attached.

If we factor mass into the equation, though, it probably moves the point a bit higher, to somewhere around the intestines. At which point the answer to your question ("What do you believe exists at the center of your being?") would probably be "feces".

There's probably a metaphor for humanity in general somewhere in there.

Sometimes things just need to be codified into law to explicitly make clear "do not do this", for certain people to understand it.

If murder being against the law isn't going to stop someone from doing it, telling them they're especially naughty for being a bigot as well probably isn't going to phase them too much.

Again, this is why hate crime laws tend to make sense at lower levels of severity (where extra punishment for bigotry might help discourage minor crimes like property destruction or harassment), but once you shoot past assault and into murder, how racist you may or may not be sort of takes a backseat to, hey, maybe you shouldn't be killing people for any reason.

afrodude77 posted...
Pretty sure in this cause though it was because the church was frequented by black people. I mean a white meth head murdering a black dude for his wallet wouldn't really be a hate crime imo just typical robbery and murder.

But is someone planning a mass murder spree at a black church somehow inherently so much worse than a white person planning a mass murder spree at a white church?

Or could we possibly agree that planning a mass murder spree at a church is pretty fucked up no matter who is inside?

It's not like the people are going to be any less dead if you murdered them for no obvious reason, whereas racism makes them extra dead.

What they're saying, is that "hate crime" is a nonsense term and doesn't need to exist.

This.

I understand the logic of "hate crime", and I'd argue there are definitely cases where it's a valuable distinction (ie, spraypainting swastikas on tombstones in a Jewish cemetery probably should be punished more severely than a normal generic "grafitti/vandalism" offense would justify).

But at a certain point, it doesn't really matter why you're doing something. Killing someone because they're black/gay/Jewish/etc arguably isn't all that much worse than killing someone because you find them annoying/because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time/because it's Tuesday, and there really isn't a need for an entirely new classification of crime.

If you go out of your way to kill someone because of their minority status, then that's just premeditated murder, and it's already the most severe type of murder we have punishment for. We don't really need extra classifications that only muddy the waters even more and fall into the trap of subjectivity (if a white guy kills a black guy, did he kill him solely because he was black, or would he have killed him even if he was white? That's a REALLY hard case to honestly argue in court).

It's also age-based to some degree.

Younger students tend to either have a weaker grasp of the value of money (especially if their parents are paying for college, or they took out loans), or view college as "paying for a degree", so the individual classes don't matter as much to them as does the ending where they get handed the degree and (presumably) get the opportunity to get better jobs in the job market.

Older students (ie, adults who have worked for years and are now taking classes on their own time, entirely with their own money) tend to view things more as going to school to better yourself, with whatever degree (assuming they're even going for a degree rather than just taking individual classes) being more of an afterthought. The older adult students tend to see classes as valuable in and of themselves, especially because they're paying for them. Doubly so when you get the occasional retiree who is going to college to have something to do with their time, now that they feel like they've successfully accomplished whatever it was they were meant to do in life.

I had a few classes where most of the class were teenagers/early 20-somethings, but there were a few 40+ adults. In almost every case, the older students were the ones who were there every single class, and tended to be the most engaged with the professor.

Electric razors exclusively. Mostly trimmers to maintain my goatee and an electric razor to full-shave the parts I want fully bare.

I think I've used a blade razor like three times in my entire life. I've never really seen a single reason why it was superior in any way to what I was already doing.

Depended on the class.

My Psych classes were my major, which I'd picked in the first place because I was interested in psychology, so I'd try to attend as many of them as possible, was less likely to skip, etc.

But classes I was only taking to fulfill specific degree requirements I'd be much more likely to skip, especially if attendance wasn't mandatory and the professor provided a full syllabus on the first day of class (meaning I could show up for tests and knew when papers were due, and never needed to show up as long as I read the material on my own time).

Size of the class also played a role. I'd be more likely to show up for a class with 15 people where the professor was going to have a lot more direct interaction with students than one in a lecture hall with a hundred other people where the professor was more likely to have a TA teach for them.

I hate it, but mostly because people keep pushing it back further and further every year.

Keep your cancerous growth of a holiday confined to December and I'll be as holly and jolly as you want. But when my local radio stations start playing Christmas music in mid-October, you can go fuck yourself with a rusty pitchfork.

That's one of the reasons why I enjoyed the often-charming sexism of Mad Men: It managed drive home the negativity of sexism while still being entertaining.

Wait, you mean we weren't supposed to look up to Don Draper and view him as an ideal version of masculinity to aspire to? Man, all of the guys at my local MRA meetings are going to be floored by this!

Next you'll be telling me that Walter White was never meant to be a role model!
