In games like this, you influence the active story, the player is not capable of altering the backstory.

This isn't actually true.

In plenty of games where branching dialogue is allowed to alter plot, there's occasionally an option to influence the character's backstory based on the choices you make. Usually if you're given dialogue options about your past that are mutually exclusive.

As an example, there's a conversation in New Vegas where someone asks you if you know what a fish is, and you can basically answer yes or no, or sort of talk the other person into proving that they know what one is (which implies at least some vague hints as to where you've been in the world if you've seen fish). There's also multiple instances where you can imply you've either been to a specific place or have never been there ("What's a Chicago?"), and Lonesome Road is basically one long string of Ulysses mentioning places he thinks you've been and things he thinks you've done, and you can pretty much straight up say he's completely wrong.

Sure, you could argue that any answer other than the "canon" one is just you lying, but the problem there is a) there really isn't a canon backstory for your character at all, and b) options where you lie almost always have something like [Lie] in front of them, so that you as the player know you're lying when you say it.

No, not every game with branching dialogue does this, but a lot of the time, especially with games where you mostly start out as a bit of a blank slate, you can sort of retroactively fill in some of your pre-game past with dialogue in-game.

Yeah thats not what jail should be for

Jail arguably has three purposes:

1) Punishment - inflicting unpleasantness on an offender partly because "they deserve it", and partly as a deterrent to other potential criminals

2) Detainment - keeping criminals off the streets to prevent them from committing more crimes

3) Rehabilitation - encouraging people to not commit future crimes by giving them alternatives to doing so

Realistically we should probably put the least amount of emphasis on the first one (since revenge/"justice" is kind of weak and deterrents rarely seem to work all that well in most cases) and the most emphasis on the last one (because turning a criminal into a law-abiding citizen means less criminals), but in practice we almost always do the reverse. We tend to be more vindictive than redemptive as a culture (which is also why ex-cons almost always have an extremely difficult time ever reintegrating back into society).

I also watched a lot of shows in full that ran 100+ episodes, like Highlander (120 hour-long episodes) and Stargate (which had about 260 hour-long episodes spread over three series).

This is why some criminals get multiple life sentences, or sentences like "Life plus 40 years". We've got to account for unexpected resurrections!

Actually, it doesn't matter at all - in a legal sense, "life" doesn't literally mean life, it refers to a specific period of time which is considered sufficient to keep a prison in prison for the rest of their life. This matters for parole reasons (where you're only eligible for parole after serving 1/12th of your total sentence, so "life" needs a specific numerical value unless your sentence is "life with no possibility of parole").

That's also why sentences like "life plus 40 years" exist - it's adding the 40 years to the number value of "life" to get a longer period of time before parole eligibility kick in.

I think "life" differs based on where you are, but the average time is usually somewhere around 70 years or so.

If you were stuck in a tropical paradise with food, water, shelter, the Internet, and your health in tact, but for that reward you only get to play 5 video games for the rest of your life, what 5 games, would you bring with you, and why?

If it's a tropical paradise, I'd probably be less inclined to play games at all as opposed to just enjoying the experience. Especially if it seems like food, water, shelter, and health isn't going to be a dangerous factor. Even more so if there friendly local natives.

But if I had to bring anything, I'd probably just bring Minecraft. That's all the game you really need.

Though the usual cheat answer is I'd bring some popular multiplayer-only game so I could go online and tell people I was marooned and have them send people to find me. Assuming I actually wanted to leave, rather than just stay in, you know, paradise.

The Wave Master posted...
Bonus Question: What 5 games would you not bring because they would make the paradise a nightmare?

There really aren't a ton of games that would ruin the experience simply by being there, because it isn't that hard to just not play them. I mean, I could always use Final Fantasy VIII as a drink coaster.

But if it's just a question of "Ehh, which games would you never, ever play", it'd probably be a list way, way longer than just 5 games.

PS3 had a better library. Eventually.

I'd strongly disagree with this. At least from my perspective.

When I was comparing the PS3 and 360 to decide which one to get, it basically came down to a choice between whether or not I wanted to play Uncharted or Halo. At the time Halo was the easy answer, and afterwards there were plenty of games on the 360 that made the purchase worthwhile. But PS3 never really evolved beyond "The console that has Uncharted."

Sure, the PS3 had God of War and Last of Us, but I didn't (and still don't) give a damn about either. And I have trouble thinking of a single other game the console had as an exclusive that mattered at all.

Conversely, the 360 had the Halo games (5 games, because you've got Halo 3, Halo 4, and Reach as well as ODST and Halo Wars) and the original Mass Effect (PS3 eventually got this, but not until the entire generation was almost effectively over and it was mostly pointless). It also had Fable III (which I really enjoyed no matter how much people shit on it) and Witcher 2. In the arcade it also had UNO (which has always been a guilty pleasure for me), the Tron game from forever ago, and Marathon. They also had the Keflings games that my GF absolutely loved for a while, and games like Catan and Carcassonne.

Nearly every other game on either system is available for both, so don't really matter when comparing the two directly. And ultimately, the 360 has always had more and better games that I actually wanted to play, so I've never regretted not owning a PS3.

Especially since the only games on it that I actually wanted to play - Uncharted 1-3 - are now on the PS4 anyway (and I own them).

Meanwhile, the Xbox One is the console this gen that has zero exclusives I care about at all. Even Halo has turned to crap and means nothing to me now.

They've sort of already gotten rid of the games - a lot of what they have is mostly crap and ticket-dispensing stuff for crappy ticket-redemption prizes, and half the games they do have are broken.

As for the pizza, from what I saw, the pizza is absolutely terrible and almost no one wants to eat it anyway, so they'd almost be better off if they weren't stuck with "pizza" in the name of the chain.

The first time I played through that part I missed him because I heard him coughing and noped out of his house (I avoided the sick house for the same reason).

LinkPizza posted...
Who did you give it to?

Esther. Mainly because, if you believe her, Abernathy is a hypochondriac who is going to use all the medicine himself in spite of not needing it, whereas Esther is going to give it to multiple people who actually do need it.

Granted, it's always possible she's lying and she's just going to sell it or something, but the game doesn't really give you any obvious hints that she's not telling the truth, so it's mostly just a toss-up to decide who to trust. Esther will e-mail you later in the game to thank you, though, which makes her seem more legit.

Though to be fair, if you can reconcile the two groups and bring Adelaide back to Edgewater, and it's implied she's going to help cure the plague anyway, so it's not necessarily as life-and-death as it seems to begin with.

For your own reference, you can also bring the drugs to the police chief. She'll give you a reward and put them into lockup as illegal contraband so no one gets it, but you'll get influence with the corporations.

But celebrity break-ups are a complicated thing. A lot of them fall apart because scheduling conflicts with two actors working on different projects for months at a time can mean you barely ever see your significant other, which can lead to people growing apart (which can in turn lead to cheating). They can also fall apart because many of them are somewhat shallow and impulsive in the first place, making people more likely to drift apart once the novelty wears off.

Because he was only convicted of killing one person. It's not like he was a serial killer where you would have to be concerned about him randomly killing people in the group.

He was only convicted of killing one person. That you know of.

In that situation, you have zero knowledge of how many people he may actually have killed, or if he's ever going to kill again, you only know he did it once, which means he's certainly capable of it.

One could argue that he only killed one person under very specific circumstances, but a) no one knows the circumstances because he doesn't talk about it, and b) if he cracked under pressure and killed someone, he (and all of you) are now under more pressure than anyone else has likely ever been. You're still left assuming he's a ticking time bomb that can explode at any time. Especially because, based on your choices, he can easily have moments where he violently loses his temper - which just makes it seem even more likely that he might kill someone in the heat of the moment.

Again, you're really only sympathetic towards him because he's the protagonist. You follow his viewpoint, see he's generally a good man, and identify with him because you're the only controlling him and making choices for him. But none of the other characters see him that way, and they are fully justified in mistrusting him, especially when they barely know him. Doubly so since, from their perspective, he's gone out of the way to hide his past rather than admit to it, so how can you trust him?

Even in the 360 days they were declining in quality after the first few years IMO

Ehh, most of my favorite games from the era came from the middle or close to the end of it. It's a large part of why I didn't even bother buying a 360 until the generation was already six years old. For the first few years, it didn't have much I cared about beyond Halo.

I'd agree the last couple years probably weren't as strong, but the last couple years of any generation tend to be bad, because by that point developers have shifted most of their energy towards working on the next-gen games.

Regardless, the 360 was easily the best console of last generation in my opinion, without any meaningful competition or hesitation on my part. And at the time, I'd argue my fondness for the 360 probably trumped my fondness for any previous console generation.

Which is what made it so sad when they clusterfucked the Xbone so hard right out of the gate, and pretty much ruined every last drop of goodwill while the PS4 managed to redeem itself spectacularly after the weaker PS3 era.

being concerned about what someone's crimes were before the zombie apocalypses is a little silly

To be fair, it depends on what the crime was. If someone was a convicted murderer, how can you trust them to not be a danger to others now that all real semblance of law and order is gone? If the fear of punishment or social judgment didn't stop them then, what's stopping them now? Especially when killing others to take what you want/need is one of the more effective survival tactics in a ruined world?

It's hard enough to trust total strangers. It's harder when you know they weren't people you would have trusted before the end of the world.

It's also a lot harder to be completely rational and intellectual about your decisions and prejudices when you're spending every day desperately scrounging for supplies and trying to not be killed by zombies. That sort of thing tends to eat away at people's nerves, making their assumptions less rational and more emotional.

But then you'd open doors concerning whether or not the government has the right to co-opt it entirely (and if so, what they can use the money for), or if it essentially winds up having to sit in an evidence lockup forever or wind up being destroyed to take it out of circulation (which is what happens with a lot of physical evidence after cases are concluded).

That is the thing for me, as much as people complain about Nintendo having small drives/memory, at least I can go into any store and pick up an SD card or a external hard drive and expand it without needing to buy up-charged proprietary storage.

Nintendo can be pretty strict about locking out third-party or general support for tech and selling you first-party solutions for problems you shouldn't be having in the first place as well. It usually depends on what part of their arrogance cycle they're in as to how many blocks they put in to keep anything but proprietary tech from working.

Ironically, Microsoft is probably the one most open to general compatibility, mostly because they're already spreading their reach across both the Xbox and PCs (which is why Xbox architecture tends to be closest to PC in general), so it's easier to be compatible with most general PC tech.

Ehh. As sad as the people who are bothered by it might be, the people using it in the first place are still mostly idiots themselves, so you're basically left with a fight where both sides are kind of terrible.

All the boomers I know are broke. They hit up their kids for money or housing.

This is at least in part because most Boomers spent the early years of their life being constantly told they wouldn't have to save for retirement because social security had them covered, along with whatever pensions or retirement support they'd be getting from work. So they should spend as much as they could because it was good for the economy.

Then they got old, and most of the safety nets completely fell apart because they were little more than a pyramid scheme in the first place, and everyone panicked because they realized they were going to be fucked. Which is around the time you started hearing financial planners start talking up 401ks and saving up for retirement funds

Granted, some Boomers were clever, and some were just ruthless, and now have a lot stashed away to cover all of their worries. But most of them are just starting to hit the point where they're realizing they were lied to their entire lives and now they're kind of fucked.

Of course, since they're old, and old people vote, and politicians pander to the older demographic because they vote, expect to see more and more social programs to support the elderly get passed in the near future, which put even more tax burden onto the young, preventing Millennials from ever managing to make or save any money of their own. So who's really getting the last laugh there?

I don't believe in any supernatural retribution from the dead, but I do believe that the dead are held in high regard by their closest living friends so even the slightest ill-speak can cause problems.

This is a pretty good summation.

The main reason for not speaking ill of the dead was so that the dead wouldn't come back and haunt your ass. It's sort of the same vein as to why you weren't supposed to talk bad about fairies (and it's why they're called The Fair Folk in the first place, which is a deliberate lie). You'd either emphasize the good parts and kind of ignore the bad parts (or totally lie, or not talk about them at all) so that the ghosts and fairies and other things that go bump in the night wouldn't come to screw with you out of revenge for badmouthing them.

That being said, I don't really believe in ghosts or the supernatural in general, so the dead can go fuck themselves. If you were an asshole while alive, you're still an asshole even after you die. You don't get to retroactively clear your accounts of all negatives just because you're dead.

THAT being said, I'm not a total piece of shit either, and I have at least something resembling empathy in my brain, so I'm not going to walk up to friends or family of someone who's dead and be all like "Hey, your dead loved one was an asshole. I'm glad he's dead and I hope he's rotting in hell."

Generally speaking, if someone feels the need to specifically ask my opinion of someone who's dead I won't necessarily sugar-coat it, but I don't go out of my way to rant about how terrible a person someone was for no real reason just because it makes me feel morally superior.

I can't honestly point to any one ps4 exclusive game and say......it was worth getting the system for that....but all together it was ....eventually worth it.

A lot of the games I've played and really enjoyed this generation were PS4 exclusives.

Just off the top of my head, Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, Spider-Man, the Uncharted games. And while I didn't really like Last of Us or Bloodborne, I hear they were pretty popular with some people. I'd also argue that Until Dawn was cool, though it tends to work better as a rental or watching YouTubers play than it does as something worth owning and replaying (though at this point you could probably get it on sale for a low enough price to make it worth it).

Conversely, I honestly can't think of a single Nintendo or Microsoft exclusive this generation I gave a single shit about. The closest I might come is with Halo (which I loved in the past), but that franchise has taken such a total shit since 343 took it over that I couldn't care less now.

It's not even brand loyalty for me - I basically went from thinking the 360 was the best console of last generation to thinking the PS4 was best this gen. Next gen might change again (though nearly every single thing I've heard mentioned about the next-gen Microsoft console makes me think I'm going to loathe it). But I've always gone with whichever console had the games I wanted to play in any given generation... I basically went Coleco/Atari to NES/SNES to PS1/PS2 to 360 to PS4.

Unrelated, but I miss when Cracked was good.

That was a long time ago.

Michael Swaim actually started his own YouTube channel not that long ago, and kind of explained in a video why Cracked went to absolute shit.

Some of the old writers and video content producers have gotten together and tried to replicate the older style in their own personal projects (like a new version of After Hours), but it's mostly up to personal taste to say whether or not they've succeeded.

Ah yes, because the concept of a talking, bipedal blue hedgehog just screams realism to me

I basically started typing this exact sentiment before I saw it was already posted.

A magical hedgehog who came from another world and who can speak English and run at the speed of sound was never going to be realistic no matter what it looked like. And if it can't be realistic, at least it's not horrific now.

Left, which is actually the same as America since things get flipped vertically when going from the Western Hemisphere to the Eastern Hemisphere.

This makes perfect sense, because everyone already knows that everything gets flipped horizontally when you go to the Southern Hemisphere.

A lot of the dislike started from the fact that the coding and layout of the site was horrific to the point of bordering on a war crime.

But it also doesn't help that most of their articles come across like redundant crap or pure opinion pieces written by utterly unlikable people. Jason Schreier's about the only legitimate journalist they actually have, and is one of few reasons the site isn't even more of a laughing-stock than it currently is.

Being part of Gawker (with all the negatives that entails) doesn't really help its case, either.

It's not QUITE as utterly garbage as Polygon, but they aren't that far different at this point, and that's damning with faint praise regardless.
