At least Tomb Raider turned out okay

It's mostly because Crystal Dynamics did most of the work, and Squeenix mostly just acted as publisher. But multiple people have pointed out that Squeenix shuffled Crystal Dynamics off the job and took a more proactive role in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider is easily the worst of the three games by far.

A similar pattern can be seen with Deus Ex. Human Revolution was mostly Eidos, and managed to be a strong entry in the series. Mankind Divided was the one that had a much stronger influence by Squeenix, and the game is shit in about half a dozen ways.

Squeenix mostly succeeds by keeping their fingers out of pies and letting other people do the worthwhile work. But they lack the self-control to keep their fingers out of any of the pies once they start realizing how popular those pies are getting.

They've also got the problem where they screw themselves over by having vastly unrealistic sales expectations based on enviously seeing what sort of numbers CoD is pulling - which is why you have stories like Tomb Raider selling 4 million copies (more than any other Tomb Raider game in history), and Squeenix still viewing it as a failure. Which only encourages them to start tampering, which in turn absolutely ruins the good thing they accidentally lucked their way into in the first place.

And I was referring to the possibility that you might come into ownership of a XBone at some point in your life.

Yes, but I am pointing out that I have a greater chance of waking up one day and discovering I have sprouted wings than I do coming into ownership of an Xbone. At a certain point, there's no functional difference between a 0% chance and a 0.0000000000000000~1% chance.

I've actually operated on the assumption for years that if I somehow won or was given an Xbox One for free, I'd immediately sell it or give it to someone else instead of using it myself. This assumption hasn't actually changed at any point.

Nearly every game released this generation that I care about at all is available on the PS4. Halo 5 and the Master Chief Collection are the only games that would even potentially interest me in theory, but they absolutely ruined Halo 5 and the Master Chief Collection has been massively broken since release (something they're only starting to fix four years later), so I have zero interest in playing them.

When it comes to other exclusives, the main ones everybody always used to bring up were Scalebound (which was cancelled, but which I never gave a shit about in the first place), Crackdown 3 (which is endlessly delayed, and which I never gave a shit about in the first place), Quantum Break (which never interested me), Sunset Overdrive (which always seemed like overhyped pretentious garbage, like a shit version of Jet Set Radio), Titanfall 2 (which never interested me), Forza (I haven't been interested in sim-racing games since Gran Turismo 3), and Gears of War 4 (I've never liked the franchise, I see no reason to play the game most people agree is the worst one in it).

Oh, and the joke without a punchline that is Sea of Thieves.

I am very, very confident that I will never own an Xbox One. Just like I was very confident that I would never own a PS3 last generation, and I still don't own a PS3. I'm pretty good at predicting my own personal future preference trends (and have been for more than 25 years).

Granted, Microsoft COULD release a console next gen that solves a lot of my issues with the Xbone and successfully courts third-party support reminiscent of the 360, and thus win me back again. But literally none of the evidence out there now suggests that they WILL. Or that they even want to.

It is telling that the Enix side remains more or less unchanged, setting aside the absolute creative failure that Star Ocean has become. Dragon Quest XI is certainly a very pretty game, but the core mechanics are pretty much the same that we have been seeing from the series for the past thirty years (not a bad thing, if you ask me).

Ehh.

Enix used to put out games other than those two franchises, and a lot of those games were innovative or really enjoyable. Post-merger, there hasn't been a lot of that, and I'd argue that both Star Ocean and Dragon Quest have fallen off in terms of quality (Star Ocean WAAAY more than Dragon Quest, but still). Speaking as someone who was a fan of both Square and Enix before the merger, both sides of the company have been significantly worse since.

With that merger, the way I've always seen it is that two creative companies with a long history of success came out the other side with each one being worse off. It's not even a scenario where one company pulled the other one down, or they sort of equaled out in the middle, but both winding up worse than they started, and then acting as publisher to Eidos and Crystal Dynamics fucking with those companies as well.

I have no idea what happened on the corporate side (other than it being more takeover by Enix than a straight merger, because Square bankrupted itself via the film studio fiasco), but whatever it was was apparently a clusterfuck.

Option 1, if you ask me. Option 2 is just painful.

I feel like that's my usual stance. It's why I hope Anthem fails and tanks the company - because the BioWare I loved and considered one of my favorite developers ever is effectively dead, and a corpse is walking around wearing their face. If Anthem succeeds then BioWare continues as a company, but they'll just keep making games like Anthem, exploiting old franchises in terrible ways, and generally just serving as a revenue generator for EA.

I don't want EA rewarded for its crimes. I'd rather see BioWare die and the talented minds go to other developers than to see the company continue to shamble along and shit out garbage under the old brand name.

Of course, it's not like we didn't see the writing on the wall for BioWare - I'm old enough to remember Origin as something other than an online service, and C&C as something other than a mobile game.

"Never" is an absurd exaggeration, considering that there's always a chance. I'd rather have a slim chance than no chance.

http://wvww.youtube.com/watch?v=wGdhc9k07Ms&t=0m46s

Never may be an exaggeration, but I wouldn't call it absurd. To this point I can think of precisely zero examples of companies absorbed into companies like EA or Activision that ever managed to escape and produce anything worthwhile again. As Wave pointed out, the Squeenix merger essentially destroyed two companies (and has poisoned at least a few other developers as well since). Bungie's about the only major name developer to escape the clutches of a massive publisher - only to rush into the arms of a different one, which proceeded to take a liquid hot shit on them and ruin them themselves. I can't imagine any scenario at this point where Bungie produces another game I care about - even ex-Bungie employees have mentioned that the entire corporate culture of the studio has radically changed to the point where it isn't really the same company anymore.

In the case of Obsidian I worry less about Microsoft than I do EA and its ilk in terms of executive interference or forcing microtransactions into every game, but we've also seen what happened to Rare, so it's not as if Microsoft is a shining beacon either.

And in this particular case, my "never" was referring less to "They'll never make a good game again" as much as it was signifying "I don't PC game and I'm never going to buy a Xbox One, so even if they make the greatest Obsidian game ever I will never be able to play it".

There's always the possibility that Microsoft will release a 9th gen console that is the greatest console ever and I'll wind up buying it (and thus be able to play Obsidian games on it), but Microsoft has been talking about discontinuing the Xbox entirely for years now, and they're pretty clearly pushing the idea of "games as service" and crossover with PC gaming (both concepts I loathe), which implies whatever they come out with next time around isn't likely to be a console I'm happy to buy, as much as it is a cancerous tumor on gaming that I want to scour with cleansing fire.

So yes, I feel kind of justified in the statement that the statistical likelihood of me ever playing another Obsidian game again is REALLY fucking low.

why would i want an x-box? especially first gen? that controller was a monstrosity

If you were an adult at the time, the S-controller was pretty much perfect for normal sized hands (something Nintendo still continues to not even remotely give a shit about).

The 360 controller was essentially the S-controller improved, streamlined, and turned wireless. Which basically made it one of my favorite controllers of all time.

zebatov posted...
Nah. Xbox is clearly the better console overall.

It's literally the worst console this generation for people who actually buy consoles to play games. Even many Xbox owners and fans will admit this.

And I say this as someone who considered the 360 the best console of last generation. Microsoft tanked hard this gen, just like Sony did when they screwed up the PS3 launch/gen after being so insanely dominant with the PS2.

zebatov posted...
Xbox wins in both these categories.

It really, really doesn't.

The controller issue is slightly more debatable - the basic Xbox One controller is worse than the 360's was, and it starts to push into problems by being a little chunkier (not quite as bad as The Duke yet, but less streamlined than the 360), but I could see people with overly large hands preferring it to the PS4. Then again, I'm 6'3" and have very large adult hands and I still prefer the Dual Shock 4 (its only flaw being the stupid touchpad, but that actually helps make the controller meatier, which is nice). So I'd argue for most actual humans, this is either a relative draw, or the PS4 wins.

When it comes to games, though, it's no contest. Most Xbox exclusives are crap, and even their most overhyped exclusive titles seem to be little more than a blip on the radar before disappearing out of most people's memory. Meanwhile, the PS4 has put out multiple exclusives that have been highly praised as some of the best games of this generation. Not having a PS4 means you miss out on a lot of worthwhile games. Not having an Xbox One means you missed out on the worst Halo game they've ever made, and the broken Master Chief Collection that they're only just getting around to fixing four years later. And this is made even worse by the fact that half of Microsoft's "exclusives" these days are available on PC anyway.

I'm not counting Nintendo in this comparison, because Nintendo is always sort of the weird kid sitting off in the corner doing his own thing, and how you wind up feeling about that depends almost entirely on how you feel about Nintendo's latest gimmick controller, and whether or not you give a shit about the 47th Zelda retread or the latest iteration of Mario-flavored games (spoiler alert: I do not). And also Pokemon if you are a filthy 90s kid. Kids and people living off Nintendo nostalgia are going to love Nintendo no matter what. People who don't really care about Nintendo aren't going to care about their latest "innovative" console, either.

A zombie corporation ate your game dev.

Microsoft tends to have a better track record with devs than publishers like EA or Activision (arguably, Bungie was at its best with Microsoft and was only ruined by Activision), so I'm not entirely bothered by that aspect.

But companies working under Microsoft's umbrella are obviously going to be making exclusive titles, and I really, really don't like Xbox's vision of the gaming future, so it means any games Obsidian makes are likely going to be on platforms I don't play on.

Conversely, they've been kind of screwed for years, so without an acquisition like this they probably would have shut down soon regardless.

So, is it better for the company you love to die, or for it to continue to make games that you'll never play?

Crowdfunding, in and of itself, is not a scam.

But it is definitely used for more scams or failures than successes.

Though the real problem is people who view crowdfunding as a preorder of a product that will DEFINITELY come out on time and as promised, which it isn't and has never been. What crowdfunding IS is a modern, grass-roots version of angel investing, which has been a thing for pretty much forever. You are basically investing in the IDEA of the product, and hoping that your investment will help it come to fruition, but you are in no way promised or owed anything, and if you're investment fails that was always a risk from the beginning.

Simply throwing money at something because you think it's "neat" or because it tickles your nostalgia isn't a wise business decision at the best of times.

I was just joking with a co-worker (she teared up at the news) that the Day 1 of every Marvel film probably has his cameo scenes scheduled, just in case.

From what I'd heard, they actually scheduled his scenes so they could film multiple ones at once, with the implication that, in some cases, they were literally filming his scene before anything else in the movie.

The idea being they didn't want to be constantly flying him around all the time with his health being what it was for the last few years, so they'd try to deal with multiple scenes all in one go to get it out of the way.

I have no idea if that's true, though.

For the first 15 years or so of my life he was a hard motherfucker, and I probably wouldn't have stood a chance against him even if I had a gun. But he wasn't one of those guys who always feels like they have to prove themselves - he knew damned well he could kill most people he met, so he didn't start fights, and he was generally pretty good at defusing them.

The fact that he could put a fist through a wall (or a door, or break a chair) when he was ultra-pissed helped keep that fear fresh, though (not that he was doing that constantly, but it happened a few times). If I'm honest, if he'd been a total pushover or the sort of parent who absolutely insists on trying to reason with kids and not hit them in any way, I would have been an uncontrollable little shit.

There's a difference between voting for someone because you agree with most of what they say but disagree with some of what they believe, and voting for someone you actively hate and disagree with solely because you hate and disagree with the other choice more. A two-party system that pulls to the extremes and feels the need to choose opposed binary stances on every issue disenfranchises a significant majority of voters.

For as much as people bash Trump and his 'fake media' stuff, he's not exactly wrong. The media sensationalizes everything. It's awful.

I've pointed out in the past, but there were about three different occasions where I was close enough to a story significant enough to make AP/Reuters (and thus got reported by multiple news sources) to know the actual facts of what happened, and in every single one of those cases, the news reports about those events were blatantly wrong. And I don't mean "got a few of the facts wrong", I mean "literally changed the entire context of the story" wrong.

It's hard to trust the news when, in the cases where you can actually double check them, they're effectively straight-up lying every single time.

The rush to be the first source to break a story plus the desire to sensationalize stories for ratings has basically turned the news into anything BUT a reliable source of factual information. Everyone always blames media bias on politics or ideology (and those certainly play some role), but the far bigger problem is the drive for ratings in a 24-hour news cycle where millions of dollars are on the line.

The accelerating pace of pop culture and greater penetration of media and information means that 20-30 year wide cohorts are basically meaningless. At this point, saying "I'm an 80s kid" or "I'm a 90s kid" conveys far more and far more accurate information than any attempt to classify someone as a millennial.

Well that's the problem: we seem to think having a purpose and making money is more important than progress as a species.

Probably because no other species on Earth worries about that, and humans have spent the last few tens of thousand years or so not giving a shit about it either.

The idea that we should even care about the species as an abstract concept is a very new idea. Even cultures that encourage the individual to give up some of their value in favor of society only really focus that obligation on smaller cultural, ethnic, or nationalistic groups, and the idea of "humanity" as a singular global entity with innate value is very much the product of the last hundred years or so, tops.

One could even argue it hasn't even really been that long, and it really only applies to the last 50 years or so. Possibly only the last 30 or so, if you want to make the argument that true global identity really only started emerging in the wake of the Internet/World Wide Web, though there were definitely stirrings before that.

They're also tied into the Lovecraft mythos, so if you're a literary hipster you can enjoy them on those grounds alone!

It's been eons, but....I thought he was initially a thief actually (or some kind of thief/fighter hybrid).

He was a pirate for a while, but the stories kind of minimize that, because he's supposed to be a relatively honorable warrior, which becomes sort of awkward if you have him robbing and murdering people.

For the most part, he only kills "bad" people who absolutely deserve it in most of the stories.

If we were going to boil him down to D&D classes, he's definitely a Fighter with a few levels in either Ranger or Rogue (or both). What he isn't, in any way, is a Barbarian.

Anyway, the books are WAY better then the movies.

The Dark Horse comics from the early 2000s or so were pretty good as well. They were either directly based on the original stories or influenced by them, so they were more like what Conan is supposed to be than the public perception of what he is post-Arnold.

Goose is also nice. But the problem with both is that they're essentially entirely dark meat. Which isn't necessarily a problem if you like dark meat, but a lot of people prefer white meat, which kind of leaves them screwed.

This is entirely possible, though Mystara / Hollow World might be more familiar to you as the "Known World" of basic (i.e. red box) D&D from back in the day. (I also recall getting a fair amount of my basic D&D stuff from Kay-Bee, so that seems likely.)

It's also commonly known as the "Gazetteer" setting, because the Gazetteers that came out in the 80s that described the various lands were kind of famous in and of themselves (and you see quite a few ads for them in comic books from that era).

Later it was the setting of the Rules Cyclopedia. Though it hasn't really been supported since 3e supplanted Basic D&D and AD&D (and 3e used Greyhawk as the default setting).

Mystara is probably my preferred setting after Faerun. Red Steel was actually the first D&D product I ever bought.

Of all the problems I've ever had with controllers, analog sticks are almost never the problem.

I had one Xbox 360 controller go wonky years ago where the sticks went off-center so there was always a "drift" unless I constantly manually re-centered the sticks, but that happened once out of like 7 controllers.

Ive never cracked a screen. I dont understand how it happens to people so often

they fall.

these days, with phones having glass to edge, and pretty much no bezel for a buffer, coupled with them being extremely thin, means a fall on a corner is going to destroy the screen.

I think he's asking why people put them in positions where they can fall in the first place.

I think I've dropped my phone like three times in the last 25 years.

$400+ iPhones

oh po

they're $1000.

I'd never buy one, so I have no idea.

I vaguely remembered there was some point when they were $400, though.

But I concede, the extra $600 cost certainly justifies Asian sweat shop conditions for their manufacture. Why, if we actually cared enough to ensure humane working conditions, they might have to charge $2000 for them instead! Because we certainly can't have Apple execs and investors making less money, now can we?

PO you forgot to switch to your other account

No, if it was me, I would have pointed out that he's only known as Conan "the Barbarian" because of the Marvel comics version of the character in the 70s and the movie version in the 80s.

Original Recipe Conan was usually referred to only as "Conan the Cimmerian" or "Conan of Cimmeria". And in spite of the fact that actual historical Cimmeria was somewhere in Russia, fantasy Cimmeria was supposed to be in ancient Ireland and Conan's people were basically supposed to be ancient Gaels mixed with the blood of Atlantis.

He was never really a "barbarian", per se. He didn't wander around topless (he usually wore full armor), or have trouble speaking (that was AHNOLD's fault - book Conan was actually pretty intelligent and well-spoken). By his 30s he was basically a general, and by his 40s he was a king. And he'd usually adapt to the culture of whatever nation he happened to be in at the time, not stubbornly cling to his own culture or act like a savage (even if "Savage Sword of Conan" was another of the Marvel comics in the 70s).

Conan as written in the original stories was more than cultured enough to be willing to shave, groom, and generally keep himself clean whenever he can. He might start to look a bit scruffy if he's been traveling through the wilderness for a while, but given the opportunity he'd clean himself up like any other civilized warrior.

Lol, it's funny that people are calling him racist while simultaneously enjoying the benefits of the virtually slave labour that illegal immigrants have provided for them for the last 100+ years. Who do you think is picking the pumpkins for your pumpkin spice latte?

If they don't care about the borderline slave labor that makes their $400+ iPhones, why should they care who's picking crops? If we don't give a shit about marginal human lives in other countries, why should we care about them in our own?

Basically, it's Brian Cronin doing a series of articles on the evolution of Mary Jane's character in the early issues of Spider-Man, taking them all in order.

Yeah.. what i said.

No.

The USSR in Afghanistan was a symptom, not the cause. Even if they'd stayed out of Afghanistan, they would have experienced the same collapse, merely slightly later.

It's the same as people who like to claim that the US escalating military spending under Reagan forced the USSR to match spending to keep themselves competitive, which ultimately bankrupted them (thus implying Reagan single-handedly killed Communism). While that ALSO played a role, and helped accelerate the process, the real problems were there long before 1980.

People always like to point to things like bread lines being indicative of the USSR's economy being weak, but it's been established that there were farms in the USSR that were producing so much food that it was left to rot in the fields, because what was actually lacking was the infrastructure to move goods and wealth from one place to another. It was administrative problems more than purely economic ones, or economic weakness caused by military spending.

I wouldnt mind seeing Taiki Waititi direct Gunns script. He directed Thor Ragnarok, so hes worked with Marvel before and he has a very similar style. But I dont know how easy it is to get a director on such short notice.

This delay must be hurting all the other MCU as well because theyre expected in such a specific time table

One movie being delayed doesn't actually mess with the rest of the schedule - they just lift it out of the rotation and produce all the other movies on time and in order. They don't delay the entire chain because one movie goes bad - that's the reason why Inhumans falling out of the plan didn't mess with anything, and why they'll be able to adapt very easily to having the Fox-licensed characters back under their control.

It might be an issue for a movie that was pre-planned to be a significant part of the overarching plot (like Winter Soldier or Civil War), but the Guardians movies were always sort of their own separate thing anyway. Even in the wake of Infinity War, I can only assume they would have gone off and separated again, and not been all that significant to the rest of the setting.

There WAS talk about using Guardians and Captain Marvel to serve as a foundation to build a new "cosmic" shared universe (with stuff like Nova and Silver Surfer or Adam Warlock or Quasar) that exists in the same universe as the shared Avengers filmed but mostly only interacts with itself (similar to how the Defenders exist in the same universe but don't necessarily interact with the Avengers). Guardians being delayed might interfere with those plans, but they don't seem to have been all that advanced beyond the brainstorming stage anyway.

Supposedly with Guardians they're more than willing to leave the movie delayed until a major director comes along and agrees to work on it, and they're not in a rush to grab just anyone to do it. So it could wind up delayed for years (or eventually get outright cancelled) if they don't find a director they like.
