Bonus polls I want to see:

Link/Zelda (assuming Zelda loses to Mario)
Tifa/Cloud
Ganon/Seph (Got Villains finals rematch, alternatively Bowser/Seph and Bowser/Ganon will be great as well)
Mega Man/Mega Man X (need to settle this debate)

My idea was for some bonus polls involving only Noble Niners that have never faced each other in a 1v1 match. That requirement limits the pool of potential matches to the following:

Cloud/Mega Man
Crono/Samus
Crono/Sephiroth
Mario/Sonic
Mega Man/Samus
Sephiroth/Sonic

Mario/Sonic is the obvious match that most people want. I'd also choose Crono/Sephiroth to get a better read on Sephiroth's strength (and how he compares to Cloud). Cloud/Mega Man could technically happen in the Loser bracket if everything goes right, so it could be removed from consideration if Mega Man beats Crono.

However, we would have to avoid using the same character in more than one match if we're going to run multiple matches at the same time.

There was never a time here when this applied to Snake.

Maybe in 2013, based on the Link/Snake bonus match. But it's hard to say if that bonus match really represented Snake's actual strength that year or if Snake was stronger than usual in that match due to his recent match against Draven.

But 2013 probably wouldn't have been a good year for Nintendo if that contest didn't get run over by rallies. 2013 was during a time when the site had soured on the Wii for a few years and the site wasn't in the mood to embrace the Wii U either. Nintendo's most popular characters probably would have been weaker that year based on the site's overall opinion of Nintendo at the time.

Zelda is currently in the process of possibly defeating a third Noble Niner, with even more blood possibly on her hands after Link sends her to the Loser bracket. Zelda could upset Samus in the Loser bracket, but it requires Samus to defeat Snake to avoid a rematch. Then Zelda gets a crack at Cloud if she makes it that far in Losers.

Random note these vote totals are ass.

Everyone is playing Smash clearly.

I think the sucky vote totals aren't just limited to this match, because vote totals seemed to collapse during the previous match. We were actually on pace to surpass 30000 votes based on our vote totals at the 12 hour point. We were at 19798 votes after 12 hours, and still only finished at 29353 votes. That means 67.45% of our votes were submitted during the first 12 hours, which is unusually high. A normal match with the 7:00 PM EST start time gets roughly 63.50% of the total votes during the first 12 hours, so the last match was either frontloaded, or the vote totals collapsed during the second half.

Interesting comparison for Snake/Samus and Zelda/Mario:

If Sephiroth = Sonic, Mario gets 52.02% on Snake

Some people have considered Sephiroth to be the weakest Noble Niner, but this comparison shows there isn't too much room for Sephiroth to be weaker than Sonic while making sure Mario is still stronger than Snake. This also has implications for Zelda/Mario as Snake/Zelda were pretty much equal. If Samus does outperform that projection, it would likely support the idea of rSFF in Samus/Mario.

Alright, so it's 1:40, and Cloud is still not managing to cut percentage. I guess I was wrong that he would get a lot of it back. Would be nice if he could salvage 40% though.

Cloud did get his first lead cut at 1:05 AM, so he has gotten that out of the way.

We're not really far enough into the night vote for Cloud to be gaining percentage consistently. I wouldn't expect that to happen until 3:00 AM at the earliest.

I imagine Skyward Sword has a chance of getting in just because it's a console Zelda and because the GotD field will be fairly weak on average.

The interesting thing about the next GotD is that we should see 4 mainline Pokemon games (BW, XY, SM, Gen 8) in the contest. The last GotD had GSC, RSE, and DPP in the bracket.

Other games likely to finish highly in the next GotD include Skyrim and Mass Effect 2. And...I honestly don't even know what the fourth member of our Final Four would be assuming the bracket is set up properly to get the four best games all alive then. Odyssey? Smash Ultimate?

The strongest games of 2010-2019 will probably be the following - BotW, SSBU, Skyrim, Mario Odyssey, Mass Effect 2, Kingdom Hearts III, Persona 5, The Witcher 3, Nier: Automata

In the case of KH3, it might be a little premature at this point to call it a strong game without the game coming out yet, but it has the potential of being a Top 10 game in the next GotD contest.

Based on Sonic/Snake and Sonic/Auron, Snake gets 61.20% on Auron. In the direct match, Snake got 61.48% on Auron.

So it appears that Snake/Auron were both equally affected by sprites and the pic disadvantage canceled each other out to give us a pretty normal looking Snake/Auron match.

I'm willing to give Zelda the benefit of the doubt against Sonic and say that she underperformed slightly due to a bad picture mismatch. If she didn't - which suggests Snake might be a hair stronger indirectly and she just ripped some Nintendo support away from him - it suggests good things for her against Samus and possibly even Mario.

It does seem like Zelda underperformed slightly against Sonic. We've already seen that Snake/Zelda are pretty much equal, but Zelda did about 1% worse against Sonic than Snake did. Sprite pictures appear to have hurt Zelda, but the effect of sprites is roughly a 1% reduction.

The reason people wanted Decidueye more is because of the Pokemon fans. Where as Incineroar has a lot of haters from the Pokemon fanbase, Decidueye is easily the most popular Gen 7 starter within the Pokemon fanbase.

Have I mentioned there are 4 of these things? Thats a bit much. Lucina is female Marth. There isn't a whole lot else to her as far as Smash is concerned(Yes, there are differences, no, I don't care). She is unlikely to be the last echo or clone hurt in this way here.

I'm fine with Lucina being a playable character. Prior to Lucina's addition to Smash, there were no female characters from Fire Emblem as playable characters yet.

Link should definitely go close to 60 on Cloud but there's just something about the Link/Cloud matchup that makes me pause before going that high.

Some of us thought Link would aim for mid to high 50s back in 2010 based on Cloud looking bad throughout the contest, but then Cloud manages to hold Link under 54% in the final.

Zelda won't get SFFed worse than Ganon. The thing with Link/Ganon is that you have a hero/villain match-up, which makes it even harder for voters to make a case for siding with the villain in that match. That won't be the case for Link/Zelda, plus Zelda is a lot stronger than Ganon. 70% is the most I would expect Link to get against Zelda.

Crono largely did similar with both registered and anonymous users. In the first match, Crono got 54.28% with registered users, and this only decreased to 54.06% in the rematch. For anonymous users, it was nearly identical - 55.94% in the first match, 55.96% in the rematch.

These results suggest that we're not really seeing SmartVoterFAQs (a term Ngamer invented) in action here. The only reason Mega Man pulled off the runback is because the Pikachu rally never showed up a second time. Pikachu also lost a little bit of support from registered users, but I think that's because we got some extra voters who might have missed the first match as it was on the first day after returning from the Thanksgiving break.

Based on the current results at 10:35 PM, Snake should have gotten 60.25% on Auron based on Sonic/Snake and Sonic/Auron. So it appears that Snake overperformed by about 1% on Auron, meaning Auron's sprite hurt him more than Snake's sprite.
