Took the deal.

Went to the coordinate generator and got a spot about 400km off the coast of California. According to the NukeMap thingy, it wasn't even hot enough to burn dry wood on land. So basically I get $100m and California gets a cool light show.

EDIT: It took 9 tries to get random coordinates that resulted in even a single injury (middle of the U.K., near Manchester, with 48k fatalities and 400k injuries). And then another 11 spins to get a second one with injuries. Strangely, the second one apparently would result in 25,460 fatalities but only 520 injuries. O_o

It happens occasionally at my gas station. I always give them dirty looks whenever they do it.

Only once have I had the opportunity to shove it back in their face when their card was declined. I put everything else back and made them leave their ID while they walked across the street to the ATM to get cash to pay for the bag of peanuts they already ate.

...the dumbass was back a week later eating before buying. His card worked this time, but I told him if I caught him doing it again I wasn't going to sell to him anymore. Haven't seen him since. Must have decided to go screw over a different store. Good riddance.

People with a passing recognition of DBZ don't know about the fusion dance. The fusion dance is definitely not in the general public's knowledge base. They would probably know or recognize Goku, Vegeta, maybe one or two variations of the Super Saiyan idea (SSJ/Blue/God/etc), and the Dragonballs themselves. That's basically where the familiarity ends when it comes to people who are not actually anime fans to begin with.

It is objectively faster to read an analog clock face than to read digital numbers.

But no because there is no interpretation needed with numbers. Next you'll tell me a sundial is faster.

How convenient that you left out the entire half of my post explaining that you need to get used to it first? Once you have used an analog clock for a while, you instantly know that 'L' means 3 o'clock, an 'I' means 6 o'clock, etc. You're no longer translating anymore, kind of like learning a new language. If you already know English, when you start to learn French you will be reading french words and translating it into English for understanding. But once you've actually learned French and practiced it enough, you no longer translate the French words into English. You simply understand the French.

And when you are no longer "translating" the analog clock face, it is objectively faster for your brain to comprehend a single line or angle than it is to read an entire 3- or 4-digit number.

lmfao ok. I guess my life is a lie.

Well yeah. Numbers are instant.

I mean...they're not, though. With numbers, you have to actually read all 3 (or 4) digits to get the time. With an analog clock face, it's a shape. Not even a shape, really, just an angle. There aren't multiple digits for your brain to process, just one simple angle. It is objectively faster to read an analog clock face than to read digital numbers.

The issue comes down not to how quickly your brain registers the image, but how quickly your brain interprets the image. And that is entirely down to training and usage. If you rarely use an analog clock, those angles don't have automatic associations and basically need to be "translated" before being understood. But the more you use analog clocks, the less translation is needed. Eventually you'll just look at a clock, see an 'L'-shape, and know that it's 3 o'clock. Or see a 'V' shape and know it's 10 minutes 'till 2.

80/80

So I spend a fair amount of time on YouTube since it gives me something to do during the slow hours on night shift. I follow a pretty eclectic group of channels. Mostly gaming, but a bunch of math/science and a couple of musicians too. I think my really wide variety of subscriptions has led to getting some pretty random recommendations.

One of the channels I follow is Wintergatan, an artist/band who built a machine to play music with marbles. Now he's in the process of building a better version of the marble machine and chronicling it all on his channel. It may have led to a bunch of recommendations for craftsmen channels, and I found one called This Old Tony that I've absolutely fallen in love with. Now I don't build shit. I don't believe I've ever used anything more complicated than a sawzall in my life. But I've spent hours watching this guy talk about carbide tooling inserts, how to make sure your lathe is properly squared and leveled, how to build a pasta machine, and pretty much everything you can imagine that I'll never need to know. But he's funny as hell and he keeps it interesting. And less than a week after I started following him, he does a video with Wintergatan making a piece for the new Marble Machine!

And now I've just spent 30 minutes watching a video of OSU Drum Major tryouts. Why? No fucking clue. I don't know why it was in my recommended. And I don't know why I found it interesting. But here we are, watching John LaVange clearly kick the shit out of the the other hopefuls, and then another video of his last performance of the season where he does a back-bend and nearly has his head on ground.

This is the kind of stuff I watch when I'm bored at work. And I've only been here for an hour and a half tonight. I think it's gonna be a long night...

To be fair, Tyrod's accuracy was trash

He was also throwing under pressure nearly every single play because the line didn't feel like blocking anybody.

Not making excuses, he looked terrible. But so did everybody on the offense. And they all started playing hard once Baker went in. If I was the coach, I'd have some questions for my players, tbh. That kind of attitude is unacceptable. I don't care who you think should be quarterback, you play your ass off every single snap no matter who I put out there behind you.

Still, pretty clear it's Baker's team now. Let's see if he can keep it going. I didn't want him to have to go in this early, but that's not because I don't like him. I'm just sick of seeing so many rookie QB's getting thrown to the wolves on a pathetic team and having their confidence shattered and their careers basically ruined before they even began. I'm really rooting for him. He's got a ton of potential, and I really do want to see what he can do.

I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. And I'm happy to be wrong, too.

But it's gotta be said...the rest of the offense clearly played harder for Baker than they did for Tyrod. Those receivers were not going full-speed with Taylor taking the snaps, and they weren't fighting for the ball nearly as hard. So yes, Baker played better than I expected, but I also based that partly on expecting the receivers and the line playing as half-assed as they did for Taylor.

I said no.

I suffer from a fairly severe biological depression. It used to be absolutely crippling to my life. I became almost a complete hermit, only ever stepping outside to smoke or go buy more cigarettes.

When I finally managed to dig up enough motivation to go see someone about it and got diagnosed, I was offered 2 choices. It being a biological depression and not just psychological, I could try taking pills to fix the chemical imbalance that was causing it. There were a few options for medication, and my therapist said we would keep trying different ones until we found something that worked. The other choice was to go to counseling regularly, put in some effort, consciously change the way I thought, and try to beat it through sheer willpower.

As far as I'm concerned, my brain chemistry and the chemical reactions occurring in my brain are quite literally what defines me. To artificially change how my brain functions is equivalent to killing me and placing an entirely new person and identity into my body.

I refused the medication. Now, after 8 years of constant effort, people genuinely don't know I have depression unless I tell them. And most of the time they don't believe me at first. I have managed to accomplish something very difficult and very important by beating my depression on my own terms, and the sense of pride and strength it has given me is worth far more than any pill.
