If you agree that Sonic's not assumed to be going full throttle in his games it's not really a relevant counterpoint to say he doesn't have a dash button that prevents him from doing other stuff. I mean I'm not saying that he can't move at a speed in a fight that is high enough that you wouldn't want to slow him down or be overwhelmed as Robotnik often does, just that "he's going to move at 1000 mph and hit you in the face" doesn't really wash with me because I'm not convinced he can do that. 200 mph I'm easily buying since that's basically a slow walk if you compare it to person's sprint being their maximum speed, which is still functionally fast enough to be on a completely different level from the guy he's fighting, but like, the idea that he can move at this speed maximum so he must be able to fight at that speed isn't something that makes sense to me because it's pretty much never done in any other thing that moves. --- No problem! In Matrix 3 Smith and Neo battle each other while flying. But Neo also has a "flying speed" that he uses to get around to go help people or escape or whatever where he's clearly flying much faster than he is while fighting Smith in that scene. Going at a full sprint and attacking at full capacity generally doesn't happen. Most games will implement that in the mechanics as well by means of having a run button that disables a lot of attack functions while it's held. --- No problem! It's unclear the amount of effort the actual running requires, how much that spent effort is going to impede his ability to strike accurately or put power behind his punches, whether going at that speed compromises his ability to dodge or even properly brace his body for a spindash in a melee fight. Also like if he could zip around at mach 1 and fight at full capacity while doing so he would utterly trivialize all opposition he faces, and also the games wouldn't provide an accurate feel for the way he fights either. It sorta goes back to the "why can't Sonic smash through all walls" problem. Well the game doesn't present him in a way that implies he can. Same with fighting everything while moving at his top speed-- the game doesn't present him in a way that implies he can given his offensive attacks and style. As for fighting other speedsters we don't really get an indication that they're battling at full speed even if they are 'running.' Which could make a lot of difference. They could be doing their equivalent of SFV footsies and only running like 100 MPH. You don't really know as there aren't speedometers strapped to their legs. --- No problem! | Lopen 10/29/18 5:41:56 PM #110 | I think the problem with Sonic robots is they rarely have hype beyond a thing for Sonic to fight and they often have pitiful looking death animations and weird looking body structures due to Robotnik being kinda eccentric. Mega Man stuff often comes off as more credible at a glance because they tend to do stuff like destroy random cars in stages and they're more smooth looking. Also doesn't help that a lot of Sonic stuff gets literally one shot by Sonic while in a Mega Man game you get an idea of health scales in that a lot of stuff isn't one shot. This is all probably unfair but I'm just trying to explain some reasons why I think a lot of people feel that way. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
