If I'm following the rules, then it isn't me driving dangerously.

If you're deliberately doing something that you have reason to expect will cause an accident, you're driving dangerously. The fact that somebody else would be found at fault in court doesn't change that. If you can avoid an accident, and you choose not to (or worse, you seek one out), you suck at driving.

zebatov posted...
And just so we're aware, the first time I took my Class 4 test and failed, it was because I was driving "too defensively". I came to a T intersection with no signs, and the instructor asked me to turn right. I was going about 8 km/h. I stopped because I couldn't see to my left (vehicles, foliage obstructing view) on a road where cars will already be going 50 km/h. The instructor said because I was on the right and there is no sign, I should have kept going because I could have been rear-ended, as the person behind me would be under the impression that I have the right-of-way.

Honestly, I've always found the "you'll get rear-ended if you slow down" thing to be utter nonsense. You shouldn't do a crash stop right before coming to the intersection, obviously, and you could probably get a sense of whether or not you were clear to proceed without going quite as slow as 8 km/h, but slowing down reasonably to be able to stop more readily if the need arises isn't going to cause an accident unless the person behind you is paying no attention at all (in which case, they're causing the accident). Part of defensive driving does entail being aware of and taking into account anyone that's behind you when you slow down, but not to the point of presuming they're going to ram into you the instant you stop going faster than them, as attitudes like your tester's would suggest.

Yeah, I know he was wrong. Just an example of how defensive I typically drive. I should have just gone straight to my Class 1 instead of taking my Class 4. It's the exact same test, basically. Same points required to fail. Only difference is you have a 90 backup during the Class 1 test. I found out about the tickets required to drive a cab in Calgary aren't worth the trouble a lot of the time. No tickets required to drive tractors besides the license itself. Just experience helps.

Well, hopefully the guy whose turn it wasn't has good brakes, because I have a good lawyer!

Eh, it gets pretty repetitive. There are only so many encounters you can come across in the open world before they just start repeating. And the fact that you can only fast travel after a considerable time in the game, and with it only being one way, makes it even worse. I spent so much time just doing the stupid 'cinematic' riding just so I didn't have to drudge my way from point A to B (I'm looking at you hunting).

I'm pretty average at most things as well. I'm quite good at video games, though. And driving. I play guitar, but I'm not really great (anymore) as I stopped playing (no space to play where I am right now) and now I'm not nearly as fast or accurate as I was even four years ago. You're not alone.

For those who are lost at eighteen, at least for work, you could take up a trade. In four years you could be ticketed. Then take up another. In eight years you'll have two tickets. Then take up a third. By your early thirties you'll be able to build an entire house and travel anywhere in the world for work. There are other options, but I think that's a rewarding path.

If I'm following the rules, then it isn't me driving dangerously. If everyone speeds, then everyone is on that level, and anyone, like myself, who follows all the other rules, is above the rest who don't. Ergo, I do get to speak up.

Them being there first doesn't give them right-of-way. Them being there first and coming to a complete stop does. What that implies is that I stop quick and accelerate quick because I know most people will roll through and proceed, even if I stop first and it is my turn, because most people don't include the stopping part, just the whoever-is-on-the-right part. And just so we're aware, the first time I took my Class 4 test and failed, it was because I was driving "too defensively". I came to a T intersection with no signs, and the instructor asked me to turn right. I was going about 8 km/h. The instructor said because I was on the right and there is no sign, I should have kept going because I could have been rear-ended, as the person behind me would be under the impression that I have the right-of-way. So I failed the road test because I didn't want to risk a T-bone accident in my $50,000 truck on my side, because I could have been rear-ended by someone who would clearly be not paying attention at 8 km/h. Trust me, I'm a decent and patient driver. I lose my patience when people can't complete the simplest of tasks and follow the simplest of rules.
