Just replace "Fallout" (a series I have very little experience with) with The Elder Scrolls and this would be my exact thoughts on the subject.

Same developer, same design philosophy, same idea.

I just picked Fallout over Elder Scrolls because shooting guns in Fallout is closer to the Cyberpunk scenario than swinging melee weapons or shooting bows is in Elder Scrolls.

It looks overall like a good game, but I don't get why they feel the need to include casual nudity in a game. It makes it very awkward if you game in a place that's open to family and the like.

However violence in video games is perfectly fine for Little Jimmy to see right? It's sad that we teach kids to be ashamed of their bodies. Perhaps if we didn't try so hard to cover up nudity then folk wouldn't feel awkward seeing it.

Of course, there's also the consideration that it's supposed to be a M-rated game, so if kids are seeing either excessive sex and nudity OR violence, then their parents have failed as parents.

No, by a few I mean a few. Anakin vs Obi in ROTS had more force behind it than Obi vs... well, Annie in ANH.

Not really.

By that point in the movie, it was basically a fight between an idiot and a whiny little shit, which had very little emotional investment because the prequels had mostly done fuck-all to make me care about either of them or believable establish a realistic friendship between them (and I will bring that up again later). If not for the fact that there's always that underlying "Hey, I know these are characters I care about from better movies I watched 20 years ago" feeling tickling around in the subconscious, it would have very little impact at all.

And then they took that fight I barely cared about and stretched it out over like 40 minutes, long past the point where CGI fatigue set in, and it started feeling like an annoying endless boss fight in a video game.

Zeus posted...
And then the long drawn out affair with Maul had a sizable impact, with strong body language, etc, despite it being their first serious confrontation.

It was a fight between a cypher non-character who existed solely to sell toys and two other characters - one of whom had a limited presence in the film up to that point, and one who seemed to make a phenomenal chain of poor decisions to the point where it was almost a mercy to see him get cut in half.

And again, if not for the fact that Alec Guinness had helped establish a fondness for one of those characters years previously, and Ewan McGregor was at least trying to live up to that (even if he was given almost nothing to work with, and was sadly the only person connected to the movie who even remotely gave a shit), it would be a fight between three characters I don't even remotely care about.

And then the pacing is absolutely ruined by cutting away from that fight to focus on Padme's shenanigans and Anakin's absolute bullshit plot-line, killing any enthusiasm I might have had.

Zeus posted...
And, contrary to shitty red screen or whatever YT videos, Annie and Obi *did* demonstrate much of their friendship on-screen even if they discussed off-screen events.

Not really. Almost everything meant to establish their friendship falls into the realm of "Tell, don't show". We're repeatedly told they're friends, but they do almost nothing to show that. If anything, what I walk away from those movies with is that Anakin has always been a whiny little shit, has always resented Obi-Wan, and that neither of them has ever really liked the other in any way.

Yes, I GET that friends can needle each other or make little sarcastic or insulting comments to each other, and it's playful rather than malicious, but almost every line out of Anakin's mouth sounds like it's packed with venom, and almost every reply from Obi-Wan is thinly-veiled disgust. The story being told is that these are two people who HATE each other, but who have to work together. And then Obi-Wan mentions that Anakin is his super-bestest friend and he doesn't want to fight him, and that's supposed to be all the character development we need. They're not buddy cops who learn to work together and respect each other, they're characters on The Office who have to work together while hating each other.

Genndy Tartakovsky basically managed to show more warmth and friendship between them in 2 hours worth of cartoons than Lucas managed across three theatrical release movies.

No wonder Lucas had the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars declared non-canon - he was annoyed by just how terrible it made him look, by proving just how easy it was to do it better.

I wasn't aware "surgeon" was technically a thing prior to germ theory being accepted since in that era it was unthinkable to ask a "doctor" to wash his hands prior to reaching into a wound because a gentleman was not "dirty" and it was beyond the pale to insinuate such to the point where a duel would be the result of such a claim.

For super old-timey bonus points, you can even spell it chiurgeon!

But yeah, "surgeon" technically goes all the way back to Latin/Rome, and "physician" is at least a thousand years old as a term as well. Granted, the original words didn't strictly mean the same thing they mean today, but the idea of a person who practices medicine (itself a word that goes back to Latin/Rome) was definitely there.

Bonus fun-fact: The word "physic" is a somewhat obsolete term used to describe medicines (usually herbal medicines), while medicine itself is derived from "medicus", which is the original Latin term for someone who DOES medicine (in other words, it basically means "doctor").

I AM FILLED WITH TOO MUCH USELESS INFORMATION. THIS IS WHY I CANNOT REMEMBER WHAT POSTS I HAVE MADE IN INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD TOPICS.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must go back to reading articles about feudal era Japan and ethnic distinctions in fantasy settings, for no obvious discernible reason.

Are your dialysis issues so severe that the only way to deal with it was a chest/needles situation? Because I used to know someone who had a specific tap surgically inserted into his wrist/arm, so when he'd have to go in for dialysis once or twice a week, they literally just plugged into his pre-existing nozzle and it was way easier. Obviously, it still fatigued the hell out of him whenever he had it done, but I don't remember him having the same sort of problems you seem to have.

No clue if that was ever discussed with you, or if your doctor might have dismissed it out-of-hand because you're a more severe case, or if maybe your doctor is just kind of an idiot. But I figured I'd mention it in case you weren't aware and maybe wanted to bring it up with your doctor.

Actually, while I'm thinking about it, same question for this:

Surgeon/Ship's Physician - does "Physician" feel appropriate for the Age of Sail? Or is that a bit too "modern"? If both are acceptable, would Surgeon be more pirate-y while physician is more merchant-y, or the other way around?

THESE ARE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS!

shadowsword87 posted...
I am not the right person to ask, because I know enough about sailing to know that both a pirate and a professional crew had both a helmsman and navigator, so both would be fine.

Odd random question:

If we assume that "helmsman" is the term used to describe someone who steers a ship in the Age of Sail, while "navigator" is also a term used to describe someone who steers a ship in the Age of Sail (neither is 100% correct, but it's close enough), which one sounds more like what a pirate crew would call the role, and which sounds more like what a professional merchant ship would call the role?

I have my own opinion, but I'm kind of curious what other people think.

Yes, but there's a difference between "not profitable for tax reasons" and "literally not profitable because you fail to recoup your investment".

Solo basically needed to clear about $500-550m or so combined production/marketing budget. It did not. Disney will absolutely see that as a failure.

They might eventually see it as a "redeemed" film if it proceeds to make a few hundred million on DVD/Blu-Ray/etc, but as-is, they definitely don't see it as a success.

(Part of that is due to running script-blocking software, but even when I allow full scripts on the site it still doesn't load 100% of the time, so it really isn't worthwhile.)

It shouldn't be that hard to make a star wars film.

All you need:
-Bad ass saber fights

The best Star Wars films arguably didn't even have that.

The key is to have lightsaber fights that actually have MEANING in the narrative and emotional resonance, and which aren't just an excuse to show off elaborate choreography and special effects.

One old dude and one tall dude in a vision-obscuring helmet lightly tapping broomstick handles at each other was more worthwhile than any of the fights in the prequels.

Solo's lousy box-office performance ("lousy", in this case, meaning "made back its budget plus ~$100 million")

Solo lost money. It didn't profit.

The hit most people don't really think about is marketing budget. Production budget on Solo was $275, but marketing is usually close to whatever the production budget was, which would put the total cost of Solo somewhere around $550m.

Solo made enough money to offset the production budget, but almost certainly didn't offset the marketing deficit.

It could turn around once DVD sales come into play, but it doesn't really change the fact that it's still officially the worst-received Star Wars film ever in terms of financials, which may terrify Disney, since they want to milk this franchise for all its worth for decades to come. If audiences as a whole are already souring on it, they may need to do some major course correction.

That doesn't necessarily mean firing Kennedy, though. A good enough salvage job on Episode IX might be enough - which is why they brought JJ Abrams back into the mix.

I feel like both of those would probably kill you.

Winter jacket in Egypt MIGHT be more survivable depending on precisely when and where you did it (like at night, while standing in water), but heatstroke is a very real threat otherwise. And naked in Antarctica might be doable if you can burrow into the snow and use it as an isolating layer before you lose all your core body heat, but you're probably still losing extremities there.

Someone exceedingly clever might note how vague your options are and choose to wear a winter jacket inside an air-conditioned building in Egypt, or stand naked in a heated research facility in Antarctica, but I assume you'll come back to say no to that.

Can you imagine any politician, of either party, running a campaign today on the idea of cooperating with the other party? They'd be flayed alive.

The real problem is that people talk about bi-partisanship all the time, but most of those people don't mean "Hey, let's meet somewhere in the middle", what they really mean is that "The other side should change their stance to be more like the side I already agree with." Everyone wants the take, but no one wants to give.

Sadly, that's a somewhat unavoidable outcome when you've got a two-party system, and media and Internet help polarize both sides to extremes.

In my class we mostly just talked about human interaction and how different groups of people have different social norms, how the socialization process works, various cultural assumptions, social stratification, race/gender/sex issues, social politics, and so on. And to be fair to that class, a lot of what I learned is stuff I still reference today, whereas I'm not sure I can remember a single detail from the environmental class I took. But again, that's subjective - someone in social science fields will almost always get more out of social science classes, while someone who is drifting more towards STEM fields (which you are if you're a math major) might get more out of a hard science class.

On the other hand, you might want to deliberately go against the grain of your major and lean in to a humanities class (which sociology sort of shades into), so you can be more of a Renaissance Man who goes for breadth of knowledge and not just depth of knowledge in a narrow sphere of experience.

Also keep in mind, what you do in any given class is going to depend almost entirely on who the teacher is, and what textbook/syllabus they choose to teach. In one college Sociology 101 may be the worst class in the school, and in another college, it may be the best class you can possibly take. The same goes for pretty much any class and any subject.

The only real advice I could give you would be to tell you to track down other people in your school who already took those classes with the same professor you'd wind up having and ask them what they thought of the class, but I also understand that's kind of difficult to do, even if you aren't rushed for time. But really, it's the only answer that's actually going to be worthwhile to you.

Ultimately, you know yourself best, and know better what sort of class you'd get more out of than any of us here do. And none of us here know what your future professors would be like, so we can't really warn you away from someone who's going to be a major asshole or guide you towards someone who is going to change your life.

For Cyberpunk, while it would be nice to go 3rd person at times to see my own character, especially if customization is deep and I can change outfits or otherwise would want to look at myself, from a functional perspective I probably prefer 1st person anyway.

My only complaint was at "oh, right! The invincible ghost army that owes us a favour! Instawin!"

At least foreshadow it well in Fellowship. Jesus.

It wouldn't make sense to foreshadow it early because it was never part of the original plan.

If things had gone the way they were planned, the entire Fellowship would have avoided Moria entirely, skirted their way into Mordor, and gotten the Ring to Mt. Doom before Sauron attacked Gondor at all, or with the understanding that Gondor would have to be sacrificed because destroying the Ring was more important than winning wars.

Defending Gondor only became a goal once they realized that 2/3rds of the Fellowship were functionally useless, and that the only way they could really help would be to provide a distraction for Frodo and Sam to exploit, while coincidentally saving lives. At which point the motivation shifted to save Rohan, so Rohan could help Gondor in turn, so they could stalemate the evil army there long enough to buy Frodo time.

Aragon remembering (and successfully acquiring) the magic ghost army was more of a late-game desperation play that turned what would otherwise have been a stalemate for the good guys into an actual unexpected victory. But narratively, it happened mainly to help demonstrate (one of the many ways that the story actually does this) that Aragon WAS the rightful king.

The fact that saving Gondor was only an improvised distraction play is obvious when immediately after winning, Aragon basically leads the entire combined army straight to Mordor, in spite of knowing that they absolutely cannot win, solely to help distract Sauron even more and prevent him from realizing where the Ring actually is.

Basically, the entire first book of Fellowship is the hobbits improvising a desperate escape after Gandalf's actual plan gets completely ruined, and then everything post Rivendell is basically everyone desperately improvising after the new plan gets ruined about 20 minutes after starting.

I understand fine. You don't understand why physics won't help in that situation.

Especially since he's either assuming you can get to the lava from directly above (which you can't), or that things like gravity and wind-resistance don't exist, and that you can magically coast straight into the opening on a dead eagle, as opposed to plunging to your death.

EDIT: He's also assuming that the eagles can fly higher in the air than Nazgul's riding evil dragon-bat things can, which is probably not true.

He's ALSO also assuming that the eagles would have been willing to do any of this in the first place, which they probably wouldn't have been, because their attitude was mostly that their sole purpose was to be scouts for the gods, not to solve all of the mortals problems for them. If Manwe wasn't going to march straight to Middle Earth and kick Sauron in the balls himself, the eagles probably weren't going to get directly involved either (especially since the OTHER servants of the gods - the wizards - were explicitly told their job was to inspire and advise, and NOT oppose Sauron directly).

If the people of Middle-Earth weren't good enough and determined enough to save themselves from Sauron, they kind of deserved to be conquered by Sauron. That seems to be the general mindset the gods had after the Numenoreans turned against them.

microsoft has straight up told us that it's up to the publisher to make a game BC, and that every single 360 game can easily be BC.

Except I was talking about the 360 era, where they openly admitted that they were only emulating the most popular or best-selling Xbox games, because they viewed it as a waste of resources to emulate every game, even the most niche of titles.

And even if they're saying their criteria for determining which games get emulated this time around has changed, the mechanics of it are basically exactly the same. So no, it's not true "backwards compatibility" in the same sense that the PS2 had backwards compatibility to the PS1.

Yes, I'm sure we all remember the point in our lives where we selected our sexual orientation...

Sarcasm aside, I can honestly say that my sexual identity today isn't even remotely the same as it was when I was 19, which in turn wasn't the same as it was when I was 9.

Whether or not you want to argue that sexual preference is genetically hardcoded, subconsciously influenced by early life experiences, directly shaped by the culture and environment you are raised in, or some combination of all three, there's more than enough evidence in the world to suggest that sexuality isn't necessarily a solid and unchanging absolute throughout a person's life, and people can absolutely be "mistaken" about their sexuality or change their sexuality over time.

So it's not an outrageous statement to imply that a 9-year old might absolutely be confused about who and what they are, and that they might have wound up dying over something which wasn't even true.

Even aside from the fact that, the way that article is phrased, it almost makes it sound like the kid was claiming to be "gay" when he fell more into an "effeminate/queer" sort of mold, or even drifting into trans. Saying "I'd rather dress like a girl" doesn't really mean you're gay. It's entirely possible that he didn't really understand any of the implications of what he was saying, and that he was miscommunicating his actual situation because he was nine years old.

When I was nine years old, I couldn't even articulate to my parents or myself why I hated being in band and didn't want to play an instrument, so I wound up costing them hundreds of dollars on instrument rental that I never used because I secretly skipped practice to avoid a confrontation. The infinite complexities of sexual and gender identity certainly weren't crystal clear and easily communicable to me at that point.

I'd absolutely take that job if they offered.

If I fail I destroy nothing that isn't already damaged goods, but if I succeed I salvage something great for future generations. Plus I get paid metric shit-tons of money either way.

Have you ever watched no-kill and/or no-alarms speedruns of the Dishonored games? Some of the people out there can pull off insane tricks, and string together impressive sequences of flawless platforming, stealth, and combat. Makes me feel like a bumbling goon by comparison.

I almost never watch other people play games "well". The only playthroughs or Let's Plays I ever really watch are ones with multiple players who are trying to be funny/amusing more than they are trying to play "well".

I find great gameplay in terms of skill to be boring. It's the same reason I don't care about eSports or speed-runs.

The only other gameplay video I ever really watch is for narrative games I didn't play myself, if I'm curious about some plot element or story that I didn't get a chance to see for myself. I've done that for older point-and-click adventure games I never had a chance to play, and I did it recently for Shadow of War because I had absolutely no desire to play Microtransactions: the Game, but I was curious how they handled the plot.

That's what happens when you don't actually HAVE true backwards compatibility, as much as you're faking it via individual game emulation. ie, you keep adding new games to your "supported" list over time, usually based on popularity, so you're constantly listing new games as compatible.

That's what annoyed me with how the 360 handled it with original Xbox games. To this day I own Xbox games I can't play on the 360, and even some of the ones I can play have lag, glitches, and other problems because they weren't perfectly emulated.

That doesn't actually disprove the argument. That's saying the expansion set a first-day sales record, not an overall sales record. Other expansions could easily have sold more copies, they just didn't sell more copies on the first day.

Which actually makes sense - people who are still obsessed with WoW now are more likely to buy first-day in an era where pre-orders and digital distribution is becoming more of a norm, whereas in the past, when there were more casual players still in the mix, they might have put off buying a new expansion for a while.

Consdering WoW at its peak was running something like 11 million active players while these days it's closer to 3-4 million, it definitely isn't as "relevant" as it used to be.

Which is not to say that it's not "relevant" at all (for whatever definition of "relevance" you want to use), but this really isn't proof that it's as relevant as it ever was, either.
