King George I of Great Britain died after having hot chocolate for breakfast.

So did his son, George II.

Deciding to be sneaky, his descendant George VI tried to circumvent the Grim Reaper by having hot chocolate as supper instead of breakfast, before turning in for the night. Didn't stop him from being discovered dead in bed the next morning, though.

No, I'm an invitation for opponents to rack up easy, rapid sniper kills or melee kills, whatever they want.

I'm bad enough to singlehandedly lose my team the match. I can group up with world champions against regular Joes and my team will still probably lose the match because of me. I'm that bad.

A character with questionable motivations for her acts, who turned Poe into a hotshot idiot after all was said and done, and introduced a battle tactic into the equation which, simply because it actually worked, turned the whole setting a dimension stupider.

Bad character.

you are not supposed to deliberately get people killed. The content is there because shit happens and characters die accidentally.

Except you are. The content is there as a secret reward to be accessed when people achieve secret conditions. If something is supposed to exist because 'shit happens and characters die occasionally', then it should be accessible to everyone, not just people who utterly fail at playing the game. whether on purpose or due to lack of skill. And I do say 'utterly fail', not just have some mishaps on the road. Because, the amount of people you have to lose to fulfill the conditions calls for such an astronomically high casualty rate that is NOT explained by a mere 'shit happens and characters die occasionally' explanation. No, you have to go out of your way to do the exact thing the game tells you to avoid at all costs, or be a literal toddler who has no idea how to play the game at all besides 'get everyone to the sparkly place and sit Marth on it! :D'.

It would have been slightly(not by much, just very slightly) justifiable if the characters you get in these bonus chapters are great galloping juggernauts with broken stats who could simply solo the game on their own from that point on. You know, help people out if they're so bad to have so many dead guys? Except they're not. They're just new guys similar to the ones you've been killing off all game. And since they're underused, you're probably ending up killing them off as well just to access the next secret.

What the hell, game?

The stamina system isn't the same penalty as Ogre Battle has. It's complete different paradigm in penalties that affects class changes. Who you can recruit and what areas you can access. You need to use some characters to fight others in order to recruit them however if you overuse those characters your reputation and charisma tank meaning you miss out on secret areas and can't upgrade to high class units. But if you underuse the units they run a very real risk of dying when you're trying to recruit whoever you're fighting.

Again, it's not bad design. It's good design that was removed to appeal to a casual crowd of modern gamers.

Apart from whatever that charisma and reputation stuff is, sounds similar enough. You can't expect Fire Emblem to approach that concept the exact same way as a different series. And in any case, in your example there's actually a reputation and charisma system that the game surely reminds the player to keep high and how to keep it high, or else bad things happen. Not the same thing as Shadow Dragon at all. It does it well? It did nothing, besides set up content behind weird and novel unlock conditions with no indication thereof whatsoever.

How the hell is something so counterintuitive and obscure 'good design'? Or do you think the intuitive thing to think when you encounter an ally with bad stats in Fire Emblem is to go 'sure, let's go invest my limited deployment slots to send this guy out to the battlefield just so I can kill him off for shits and giggles'? That's not intuitive. That's borderline sociopathic. The only thing it won was creativity points. Nobody praised that feature at all. Experts panned it, and beginners didn't even notice it for the most part or panned it as well if they did notice. Small wonder it's the ONLY mechanic that didn't make a return in the Japan-only sequel which utilized the exact same game engine. Everyone realized it was bad. Except you, apparently.

I'm countering your suggestion that is bad design. Good design is something that causes you to make real choices. Shadow Dragon does it well. Once it's removed, then letting people die is nothing more than a failure state.

You should look at Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for similar situations. Your characters can die permanently but you also have to use them to unlock other characters and there's a reputation / charisma system to consider as well that causes bad things if you repeatedly use the same characters.

Except that there's no real choice here considering the 'choice' isn't even evident in the first place. Nobody in the game is telling you to sacrifice everyone except five or six favorites to get good stuff. On the contrary, the game goes on and on and on about permadeath and that you should make sure to keep everyone alive through character dialogue, then it goes and makes an about-turn like that? As I said, counterintuitive as shit. That's horrible design. If the game spends so much time drilling it into your head that dead characters are a failure state, well, then it should actually keep its end of the bargain and leave them as a failure state, just like all other games did.

It's not like the unlocked content are purely stuff to help people on if they're having trouble with the game, either. They're brand-new content exclusive to the remake, some quite challenging even. Great reward, except it's wasted on bumbling beginners just trying to make their way through the game through their characters' blood who won't properly appreciate it, and ironically completely locked away from series veterans who are playing through the game well enough to not incur casualties even without resorting to save-scumming, assuming no guides. I state again, horrible design.

As for the second paragraph, I don't need to. I played Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, which is an entry in the very same series which does the very same thing you're praising with its possible replacement characters with permadeath and exclusive bonuses for originals and replacements, and penalizing using the same characters over and over with a Stamina system. That's a good way to implement what you're talking about, instead of the brain-dead lazy mess Shadow Dragon tried.

Terminator 2 probably should be the textbook example of how to do a movie sequel, it's perfectly done in that regard. By its existence I say it even enhances the original Terminator experience somewhat.

Alien and Aliens, though... compared to Terminator, something seems... off with this pairing. Can't explain why. Probably has to do with the fact that the genre dissonance between these two is way more severe than the Terminator films. At any rate, while they're both good movies, I'll have to pick the Terminator films over them if given a choice.

It's a bad way to design a game. It's like, if in a Mario game, you get to unlock a secret level if you empty your inventory field and then jump into a pit on purpose to Game Over five times, repeat once per each world for one level each. What kind of drugs were they on when they thought of that, seriously

Because you're fucking supposed to win, not die. If you do die, however, it changes how you have to play the rest of the game. In Mario 3D land and world of you keep jumping off the edge, you get a permanent invincibility item. That's not because they WANT you to repeatedly suicide, but if you die a lot they give you a little extra to help you through it.

Fire Emblem penalizes you further instead of rewarding you, making the rest of the game harder.

By resetting every time a unit dies you're not playing a game fundamentally different from casual. It's just casual again + extra time wasted on resets.

Permanent invincibility items =/= Extra levels. I have nothing against Super Guides in NSMB games or Super Mario Galaxy 2 or whatnot, or Super Kong Mode in DKR, etc. You need help, sure, maybe the game should give you that help then. Better accessibility by easing beginners into the gameplay's great. Just don't leave features that stay permanently unlocked once they appear, let the player be able to still unlock them as long as they don't take said permanent invincibility items. Give the player the choice. Choices are fun.

The problem is when the game demands you to throw all your items and Game Over five times specifically on one specific level before you beat it for the very first time in that file, otherwise you miss out on irreplaceable bonus levels or other such unique content that can't be accessed otherwise. You're supposed to win in the game, like you say. Here, the game's telling you to lose, and not even directly, either. Counterintuitive as shit. Not cool, game. Not cool.

By the way, why are you spouting your 'casual' stuff to me? I don't give a damn about Classic vs. Casual in Fire Emblem, you go play whatever floats your boat. I'm just bashing Shadow Dragon 'cause it deserves that.

There's nothing self imposed about it beyond your decision to pick classic in the first place.

Nothing implies that you aren't supposed to reset. Nothing. Otherwise, show us your proof. Show us that the devs intend for us to not reset.

Shadow Dragon

Literally giving you more content for either intentionally killing off your guys or being bad at the game. That's an absolutely terrible design choice.

Doesn't prove anything about not being supposed to reset.

Thank you. Someone actually did point this out, huzzah.

The replacement character system is not a bad thing by itself, actually. It's actually a novel way to get players who are bad at the game through by providing them with faceless mooks who nobody will miss even if they die.

The big problem is that the game decided to reward you if you killed your characters off enough to see these replacement characters, going directly against what the game's protagonist kept talking about. You have to spend time, effort, deployment slots and potential XP just continuously throwing your guys into the meat grinder, and to get those rewards you even have to throw all the replacement guys in it as well since they'll bring your character total over the limit.

It's a bad way to design a game. It's like, if in a Mario game, you get to unlock a secret level if you empty your inventory field and then jump into a pit on purpose to Game Over five times, repeat once per each world for one level each. A Novel Idea posted...
To make Classic more appealing developers should add extra characters and chapters that get unlocked if your earlier characters die. All the GBA Fire Emblems had replacement cavaliers, etc. who were functionally similar to those you started out with, but Shadow Dragon took it a step further by having additional Gaiden chapters if too many people died. I think thats a great way to incentivize Classic playthroughs.

Extra content from certain characters being dead is actually a good idea, and surprise, it's not an alien concept to Fire Emblem, though I admit it's rare. Certain characters being dead unlocks equivalent/similar replacements with different gear, and as different characters they have their own conversations and plot tidbits.

However, these 'reward's shouldn't go beyond just handing out replacements and extra plot/conversations. Actually, they shouldn't be 'reward's at all, just 'alternate' stuff. Besides the aforementioned replacements and plot differences, absolutely nothing gained this way should be rendered inaccessible to a player who is playing through optimally yet doesn't know of these secrets. They should be aids to help beginners out of holes they got themselves into, not 'rewards' per se.

Kircheis posted...
It also kinda helps that Shadow Dragon had a bunch of actually irredeemably bad units in the roster (wtf are you gonna do with that 10% speed growth Roshea?!). So if anything there really isn't a particularly good reason NOT to kill off units for the Gaiden chapters.

Actually, there is. You can't just kill your characters off by flipping kill-switches on the battle preparation menu. No, you have to invest your own deployment slots to send these guys out just for the purpose to kill them off.

What happened to just letting them sit on the bench forgotten? That worked, didn't it? Why such a counterintuitive unlock method nobody would figure out by themselves? Which restricts player freedom, to boot?

No wonder the devs got rid of the feature in later installments, even they realized it was a failure. And no wonder that Shadow Dragon hacks which eliminated that Gaiden requirement float around on the 'Net.

It's only a mistake if they let themselves be flummoxed by these occurrences.

Use it as an opportunity to gradually phase out of 'halftime shows' altogether. Just replace it with a montage of significant plays and stats accrued in the first two quarters plus commentators discussing them, put on a very short documentary about stuff in the NFL's history, have old Hall of Famers with a beef with each other argue on air, or what the heck, even try comparing the game with the inevitable simulation done on the latest Madden. Let it be anything that's at least related to football.

That's what Super Bowl viewers should be getting. Instead we get men screeching into mics and women shaking their asses. It's a disgrace.

Let the halftime be about football as well, I don't want anything else if I'm watching the SB. Hell, just fill the halftime slot full with commercials if you like money that much, NFL, at least the SB gives us opportunities to watch some novel, funny ones.

Return > Fellowship > Towers.

The good points about Return have already been mentioned in other posts, I think, so I won't repeat. The excision of the Scouring of the Shire, while regrettable, is understandable from the viewpoint of making a movie since it's not a good idea to introduce a whole new bout of conflict at the very end and hastily wrapping it up. Better to finish Saruman off like done in the extended edition.

Fellowship suffers from the fact that its first half was originally the weakest part of the books in the first place. Still, it manages to be solid.

Towers... I won't say I dislike the movie as a whole, because I certainly enjoyed it generally. But there are a few points where I disagree with how the production went. I won't complain about the added minutiae here and there, such as Lothlorien archers appearing as support forces in Helm's Deep, or Eomer subbing in for Erkenbrand instead of fighting off the siege with Aragorn and Theoden as in the book. The details of the Entmoot are also changed, it's portrayed as if they only newly realize what Saruman has been doing to their forest, when originally they should've been stewing in their anger for quite some time with Merry and Pippin only providing the tipping point to it. I would have preferred more detailed descriptions into Ent life, but eh. This version is still acceptable.
The most egregious thing I fault is the portrayal of Faramir in Towers(no problem with him in Return), which directly contradicts the book's description of the character. The whole scene in Osgiliath should have never happened in the first place. He was supposed to be wholly different from the other Men of Gondor, a glimpse into what the old Numenoreans were like, and that sets him apart. In this movie, he's essentially a copy of Boromir, someone who's supposed to be portrayed as the paragon of the 'modern' Man of Gondor, until he randomly gains some insight post-battle for no reason and decides to let the hobbits go. This is not just merely added material, it's added material that runs counter to the book's intentions and it haunts all of Frodo/Sam/Gollum's portions of the movie past the 3/5 point. To me, that docks enough points from Towers to make it the least of the movie trilogy.

I liked that little story where every single person from the beginning of humanity is actually a single soul getting reincarnated into a different person across time and space infinite times.

Every time a person dies, the soul goes up to God and has a very brief chat with him for ten to fifteen minutes before God kicks it back to the world into a newborn baby at some random time period and location. Coincidentally, the soul always remembers nothing about its past lives so God gets a kick out of telling it about the process every time it comes back and watching its astounded reaction.

Of course they'd do it, this worked so well when China was enforcing their one-child policy. A lot of people made plenty of dough doing this back then, they'd strike again. Of course, it might not be as easy or noticeable as the 'having too many kids' thing but still.

One of my students (I teach adults as well) lived through the one child policy. She has an older brother so when her mother got pregnant the government told her to induce labour to abort the pregnancy. The family refused. So, the government gave them a huge fine and her mother lost her job while also being banned from ever working again. She's now a doctor.

Tbh though, I've been quite surprised with how many people in their 20's-30's that have more than one child in their family. I have 4 female Chinese co-workers, all of which are in their early 20's. Only one of them is an only child (she's also a 23 year old virgin who is actually really cute). One of them has 2 sisters and a brother. I'm not sure how they managed it but I'm guessing they either paid huge fines or hid the pregnancies some how.

Your student's very, very lucky.

China was downright brutal in enforcing that policy. Fines worth several months' salary was just the beginning, sometimes they'd also kidnap the father and torture him and/or throw him in prison until he finally submitted and allowed his kid to get aborted.

I don't doubt the people you speak of survived because their parents hid the pregnancies. It's likely that they managed it by moving into the big, crowded cities like Beijing or Shanghai the moment they detected the pregnancy and managed to hide themselves in the populace.

And I'm not saying that your student was extremely lucky just because her parents had the guts to persevere through what the government was throwing at them. No, she's lucky because her parents somehow managed to avoid the worst possible thing to happen in this regard.

Have you heard of so-called 'fetus extermination squads'? It's a horrifying secret that China denies or tries to hide, but you can't hide stuff like that forever.

My vote goes for Michael Jordan, considering I have no idea who the **** Mike Trout is, except for the fact that the OP specifies that he's a baseball player.

And that's pretty damning, even for someone like me who doesn't give a damn about MLB, since that fact clearly didn't stop me from recognizing 1/3~1/2 of the other baseball players on the 'Eliminated' list yet this guy is still someone who I've never even heard of until I saw this topic.

Bar the Great Maze, it was a pretty damn fun mode.

If the Maze wasn't simply a rehash of every single area you already visited, and instead was a bit smaller with the purple Subspace theme while leaving in the boss rematches and character encounters(in the 'find the character and beat them up to reclaim them' sense instead of 'find and recover all the trophies that are all hidden in a small area with absolutely no effort', plus only the boss rematches being mandatory while the character matches are all optional, you just don't get to use that character in that file again until you find and beat him/her), then it would have been vastly improved.

Put a guy whose schtick is fighting against and destroying weapons of war into a game series whose major schtick is carefully managing your weapons of war.

Yep, sounds like a swell idea.

EDIT: Actually, that could work on one condition: Do we get to fight and kill Geno? I might buy it just for that if the answer's yes.

Possibly surpasses Sonic 3&K to be the best of 'em all.

Only with the Plus expansion, however. Base Mania was still neck-and-neck with 3&K but I'd probably give 3&K the edge there. Could be nostalgia glasses though.

Better than both Kilmer and Clooney.

Clooney, yeah, but I prefer Kilmer to Bale.

At least, while Bale may have been a terrible Batman, he was an awesome Bruce Wayne as well. Best Wayne movie portrayal I've ever seen.
