in my opinion it would've been boring if Luke came into this as an anime god and saved the galaxy again. he needed a reason to take a back seat and become a mentor. 35 years between the end of ROTJ and TFA is enough time for me to be like "yeah he isnt the same wide eyed kid anymore".

i can see both sides tbh, and i'm content with the way RJ wrote it.

If Luke were instead just some random Jedi master, his character would have made sense. It is dumb to portray a man as a quitter when he didn't give up on converting his father to the same religion that he killed nearly all the followers. This is like if he didn't give up on converting Hitler to a Jew. And then he does basically convert Hitler into a Jew. You would think that experience of doing the impossible would reinforce his ideas of perseverance in the face of the Dark Side. Yet inexplicably he pusses out, when his nephew hasn't done anything near as bad as Vader and could possibly still be turned. It's idiotic and there's nothing you can say to rationalize it.

it's been rationalized a lot in this topic if you wanna check it out

Also, here is a snippet from the expanded version of TLJ with deleted scenes. (this excerpt is from some article covering it):

"The Last Temptation of Luke
In the very opening of the book, we visit with Luke Skywalker in his old age. Hes living on Tatooine with his wife Camie. He appears to have lived a good, relatively peaceful life, albeit one in which the Empires control of the galaxy has been complete, and he harbors some regrets about the plea for help from a young princess that he chose to ignore.

Wait, what?

Naturally, the scene is a clever bit of misdirection: a haunted Luke, still a hermit on Ahch To, imagining what might have been. A dream sequence might sound insignificant, but in addition to providing a glimpse of a galaxy that might have been if Luke had refused the heroes call, its provides a bit of foreshadowing as to the reluctant Jedis state of mind. He recognizes it as a vision; a warning that things are about to change. Its also a neat tribute to the original film: Camie Marstap, played by actress Koo Stark, was in a deleted scene in which Luke hung out with his pals at Tosche Station (presumably whining about power converters). The character made a few appearances in the old Legends media (even rating an action figure a few years ago), but this kinda-sorta cements her existence as the only girl on Tatooine."

This scene provides some cool insight on how conflicted Luke was and how much he thought about not becoming a Jedi. Kinda wish it was in the movie.

Well, most of that could be inferred, but Luke blaming himself for Han and Leia splitting up is news to me. That could have provided a bit extra motivation that clearly could have been helpful.

True. I never really considered that crucial to the story I guess, while the other bits are. But I could see how that adds some more motivation.

Yeah I think a big takeaway is the fact that Luke didn't cause Kylo to turn. Kylo had already been turned. There wasn't anything Luke could do at this point, even if he didn't ignite his lightsaber over him. He thought "I could save millions of lives right now" (which he would have).

What would the "rational Luke" have done? "I need to keep trying"? He had been trying, and he had failed. He had become frustrated because he is still a flawed person who was overcome with this pressure to save the galaxy and single-handedly restore the Jedi.

It is that added to that fact that he didn't fix what he messed up. And didn't try to fix it. You can mess up but down me a coward afterwards. Hell he could have even tried to reach Kylo more at the end.

in the novelization it sorta delves into this
basically Ben had always had the darkness in him. Luke agreed to train him, but Han wasn't happy about that
after Luke failed, he not only blamed himself for not being able to fix him, he also blamed himself for ruining Leia and Han's relationship. that's when he started getting depressed about the Jedi as an institution and thinking that the galaxy would be better off with no Jedi

I kinda agree though like Luke trained up Kylo, Kylo was tainted, and then he's just like, welp, better hide away while Kylo wreaks havoc! Not a good look.

Also "the entire point of Luke's character" is up for debate. You might see it as humble everyman idiot, others see it as "the chosen one".

So you can understand why a lot of fans were disappointed they didn't get Super Saiyan Luke.

I can understand this. But Super Saiyan Luke was shown in Clone Wars and Rebels (haven't seen either tbh so I'm not 100% on this) so it's not like the imagery is lost.

I don't really see Luke as ever being the chosen one. In the og trilogy, he was always kinda a normal farmer dude who learned the force just well enough to confront his father and turn him back.

Luke turned Vader back to the light after a long struggle and a lot of lives lost. He sensed Kylo's heart had already been turned by Snoke, and he wanted to try to prevent the Vader-esque age of evil. Obi-Wan couldn't turn Anakin from the dark, and look what happened.

Luke had a long monologue about how he sensed the darkness growing and couldn't do anything to stop it. He talked about how he's sick of the endless cycle of the dark rising, and the light rising, and the clash.

I think that first parts shows why Luke would not try/almost/think (what ever you want to call it) the kid. Vader was already space Hitler and Luke went to him TO try to save him. Kylo was not there yet and Luke jumps to Order 66

Yeah but again, that was ages ago back when Luke was still naive and relatively new to this shit.

Now he's under the pressure of trying to restore an entire Galactic Order back to its former glory and upholding the peace that the galaxy fought so hard to win back. And maybe he's just a little bit jaded that after everything he went through to purge the galaxy of the dark side's presence, that it just keeps coming back.

Pretty much exactly this. He scoffs at Rey calling him a "legend", and admits to the pressure of being "Luke Skywalker"

im mostly irritated that all of the cool stuff that happened to one of my favorite characters of all time was told via exposition instead of, you know, making a movie out of it. the events that we were told about that happened prior to VII should have been the story to VII.

as movies on their own right, they're OK (but not great) but as sequels to the OT they are utter dog shit.

I agree. But I wouldn't be surprised if we really see this fleshed out in 9 though. We haven't even seen the Knights Of Ren yet, which spawned from that night at Luke's academy.

Fingers crossed they don't just exposition that night again and jump to KoR already established.

I think we are just meant to think since he is a Jedi Master, we can trust his judgement when he says he sensed Kylo was already lost. Like I mentioned, Luke said he had sensed the darkness in Kylo growing but couldn't do anything to stop it until it was already too late and Snoke had turned him.

Anakin couldn't be turned when he was going to the dark side, and it created lots of problems. Luke tried to turn Kylo but he failed, and he recognizes that. Failure and learning from failure is like the whole modus operandi of the movie, and Yoda's pep talk. I think it's a nice change that Luke isn't a mary sue and just perfect at converting everyone back to the light.

I prefer the V6 over the 2.0T, but that 2.0 is a gem. It comes from the Civic Type R, but just detuned for Accord duty.

I have no idea what they were thinking when they discontinued the V6 Accord.

Honda knows how to make a V6 and I also lamented the loss. There's was nothing wrong with it - mate that V6 to the new 10 AT and it'll return even better fuel economy and do the 0-60 in the low 5s at least.

I used to be a Honda/Acura guy (Acura RSX was bae), but I got an Audi A3 a while ago from my uncle who decided he wanted the latest model and gave me a good secondhand deal to buy him out. Expensive repairs aside (not encountered yet, knock on wood), I love German cars now. I also bought a tune for it, so it gets 300+ hp. Audis are ridiculously customizable in that department. Next car will probably be an S5 or as a reach, an RS5.

Speaking of discontinued shit, if Acura still made the RSX, I'd be all over that. I loved my 06.

i really want one of the new gen A4's but they're just so expensive =(

and thats before you run into any problems

i'm facing the same debate. i'd say go Accord. the new civics are fairly expensive and the new Accords are just a way better value for not that much higher (and something that'll last a long time anyway).

significantly stronger engine, better interior, better technology, similar gas mileage, and no fastback (not a fan of fastbacks, screws with my cabin vision, even though they look cool)

Again, if you get the new Accord DON'T get the 1.5T, get the 2.0T. The 1.5 is CVT, the 2 is ten speed automatic.

CVT is bleh

yeah absolutely. 2.0L 10 speed or don't bother. to be honest i wouldn't even bother with anything below Touring but that's just me

edit: same goes for Civic, get the Touring 1.5L Turbo. It's CVT but that's the best you can get unless you don't mind driving stick on a Type R or something

neither side is lobbying for the sake of financial gain.

This is factually inaccurate. Republicans get millions of dollars from the NRA.

Right, because Republicans support gun rights. Industries support politicians whose ideological views are in line with their own, this is how all politics works. It's not some crazy conspiracy where Republicans are doing this BECAUSE it makes them money.

...Although I'm sure that does play a small factor, as these are politicians we are talking about (:

I see this constantly on social media- Calling the NRA terrorists and saying how Republicans love gun violence.

If you truly think this then you're incapable of rational judgement and empathy. Neither side wants people to die, neither side is lobbying for the sake of financial gain. Both sides just have different ways of approaching the problem.

Why are so many people hard-headed instead of open-minded

I just needed to vent this haha lol!

of course they're NOT pro-shootings or want to see people die.

They just care too much about their profits (gun sales, lobbying gravy train) to try to stop them.

"lining their pockets rather than saving lives" i'd say is as close to claiming they are "pro-shooting" as you can get. and i really think the claims that they're doing this because they're making enormous profits isn't really a substantiated claim. the NRA gets tons of unique donations and support from actual people, way more so than just gun manufacturers.

I don't make those kinds of generalizations, but it's hard to deny them when the rigth and the NRA seem to always be focused on guns rater than people.

They arent though. The left keeps saying this, but ive never seen a republican who isnt heartbroken by these tragedies.
