In the job I'm starting after graduation, I should get ~1.5 a month (6 hours per biweekly pay period).

Literally everything she does in the film should have been done by Carrie Fisher.

I disagree. Poe loves, respects, and trusts Leia. For him to stage a mutiny on her for leaving him out of the loop after a demotion would be a serious turn on his character.

He only knows Holdo by reputation, and vice versa, so the two have no real reason to trust each other except for the chain of command.

I'm not saying it HAD to be Holdo who was the officer in question, but having it be Leia would require Poe to turn on one of his heroes.

I also think the reason that it had to be someone like Holdo instead of Admiral Ackbar is so that the audience is also not inherently on her side. The plot line would have been worse if the whole time we think Poe is being terrible and Ackbar is being reasonable.

The biggest problem imo with the plotline isn't that she's withholding information or anything like that, but rather that the plan is sort of mediocre. I can imagine a world in which the plan is actually some great strategic thing.

At the time (2010ish?) it was store policy. But it also didn't carry the same legal ramifications as selling tobacco/alcohol to an underage person, so it was really easy to let it slide (also, for example, there was nothing wrong with "second party sales", whereas if I suspected someone was buying alcohol for a younger person with them I was supposed to decline the sale).

Bayesian math, however, doesn't and can't predict fair die throws. Bayesian equations ARE good for batting averages and predicting likelihood of a batter hitting a ball. They are not good for fair dice throws because historical data is completely irrelevant to the next die throw no matter how much of it you have.

That's misrepresenting Bayes. In both examples, more historical data is supposed to lead to convergence upon the "true" probability. In one case you just converge extremely fast (because your a priori assumption is correct).

Republican, a Democrat, an Independent, or what?
REGISTERED VOTERS
PARTY IDENTIFICATION
Republican 22%
Democrat 33
Independent 39
Other/DK/NA 6

They polled 22% Republicans and 33% Democrats. This is called "oversampling" and it was a big subject when the Democrats got caught doing it after the John Podesta email dump from WikiLeaks. If you want a poll that shows the Democrats winning, no problem, just don't poll as many Republicans. The results do not show the Democrats leading the race for Congress. It shows that among this group of 1,249 people which in no way reflect the American public at large, the Democrats are leading the race for Congress.

Since this came up 100 times during the election season, I think it's worth stating again that you don't quota sample with the parameter that you're trying to test. You're just assuming your conclusion.

A 1-in-6 chance absolutely is predictive. What's not predictive is saying you rolled six 1's in a row. That's your historical performance, same as batting average.

Tyranthraxus posted...
A batting average is just historical data. Actual chance to hit depends on the skill and current fatigue level of the pitcher.

The left/right handedness of the players is also a huge factor.. it's nothing at all like rolling a die or bowling average.

I'm not giving either of you credit that you are trying to make a frequentist vs Bayesian type argument.

If I handed you a coin that I had weighted and wanted you to estimate the probability of a heads, the simplest approach is to flip the coin a bunch of times, determined by choosing a level of accuracy that you would like and a confidence interval. In the same way, the simplest way to estimate a batter's average against the field (for a season) is to look at their performance up to that point. You can quibble about the differences between different pitchers, but I'm not claiming that we can't make a better RH pitcher and LH pitcher model. As more at bats happen, we expect to get closer to determining the sample space that the batter's performance is drawn from.

You can talk about how the ideal fair dice has specific properties to it, but we don't have an ideal baseball player OR an ideal election. The best we have for the baseball player is their historical performance and the 538 model is also taking into account "historical performance": they're simulating the election using the data parameters that they have thousands upon thousands of times and then recording how often each candidate won.

A batting average in baseball is not predictive, so the comparison is horrendous. Actual chance of a hit in any particular at-bat is highly situational.

The 1/6 chance of rolling a 6 on a die is not predictive, so the comparison is horrendous. Actual chance of rolling a 6 on any particular roll is highly situational.

Someone's current batting average is still modeling the latent true batting percentage that they have projected over a range of different batting situations. How do you see something like a prediction of who is winning an election any more innate and not an estimate of a candidate's "true chances" than someone's batting average?

Uh...district 7? District 6 also.

Compared to districts usually held up as examples of geometric gerrymandering, I don't think it looks that bad. Really, the interaction between 6 and 7 is the only really questionable part (if you were looking at these without knowing the geography. It's obvious once you know that it's trying to connect the large black population centers together). The southern part of 7 is just a sideways version of the interaction between OK 1 and 2.

That's a hard question to answer, because teachers don't turn in time sheets. Their salary can be distributed over 9 months or 12 months in most states, but they aren't hourly, so it's not as if any work they do over the summer is compensated extra or anything like that.

It's sort of like asking "Does *insert salaried job* get paid over the weekends?"

Darkman brings up a good point, which is related to my question:

Why are geometric standards such as convexity/compactness bad?

As technology has improved, we've become better at measuring gerrymandering but at the same time gerrymanderers have become more powerful as well. For reference, compactness in this case is a loose idea of how close a shape is to a circle (high area to perimeter) and convexity is the property that given any two points in your district, the line between them stays inside the district. Given a "fair" map that satisfies these properties, you can have a computer manipulate the boundaries ever so slightly to have little impact on the geometry but plenty of impact on the results. And that's just when you start with a fair map. If you start from nowhere, you can easily say "Find a map that satisfies X and Y which maximally benefits my party".

This is true of any requirements that you give, but geometry is one that is easier to make "look nice", which is the biggest red flag for regular people. See Alabama's current districting:

https://imgur.com/a/xsFam

This doesn't contain any glaring geometry errors, especially if you don't know the geography and can handwave some of the juts as river boundaries.

As another example of "playing the system", we can look at a North Carolina districting that was struck down. Part of the Voting Rights Act is the creation of majority-minority districts, which are districts where sizeable minority populations can elect a representative that fits them. This was in response to many southern states intentionally making districts that disenfranchised African Americans. Very loosely, if African Americans make up 20% of your population, 20% of your districts should have a large enough minority population that they can have representation.

The North Carolina legislature solved this "problem" by making two districts overwhelmingly African American, so that they essentially had no power whatsoever outside of those districts. This map was eventually struck down, but it gives weight to the claim that partisan entities will follow the rules as minimally as possible to benefit themselves.

This is why we ultimately should have independent commissions drawing these maps and we shouldn't think of these requirements as a "If you pass these, your map is good" list but rather as a "If you don't pass these, your map is probably bad" list.
