I chalked it up to being a glitch but maybe it was indeed designed that way. One of its skills is Dying. The more ways you die, the higher your Dying skill gets, which grants you passive bonuses to stuff like health and defense. It's actually a recommendation for new players to die as much as possible to unlock those bonuses sooner.
