To the surprise of almost no one, I really enjoyed Before the Storm! I was wary going into it because a prequel to Life is Strange sounded difficult to pull off (especially by a new developer) so I was amazed at the level of understanding they had for the characters. Chloe was basically perfect. One of my favorite moments was in BtS Ep1 in the junkyard where she starts smashing everything. I feel like a lesser writer would've just had her break down and cry when Rachel left, but that isn't how Chloe processes emotions. She responds to things by lashing out, so having her go on that rampage was the moment I realized these writers really knew what they were doing. I was also impressed with Rachel, who was excellent (especially since she would've been an easy character to screw up). They made it very easy to see how Chloe could describe Rachel as 'her angel' in Life is Strange, but they didn't go overboard and make her perfect or anything. She was flawed, and I was always left with a sense that large parts of her were an act, which was exactly what Rachel needed to be.

That said, the game wasn't perfect. I really feel like it would've benefited from having five episodes instead of three because the third one felt super rushed. I would've preferred one episode dedicated to learning about Sera rather than an info-dump, then one to learning about what Rachel's dad's role in everything was, and then another to wrap everything up. Life is Strange wasn't perfect either, though, and Before the Storm's problems were similar to it so I don't hold it against it much. I felt it was exactly what a prequel should be because, for me at least, it enhanced my appreciation for the original story. Seeing Chloe and Rachel together added a lot of depth to Chloe's desperation in LiS, and seeing Chloe here, at arguably her lowest point before meeting Rachel, really justified a lot of her actions in LiS for me. Stuff like that matters more to me than the problems I had with the third episode, so I rank Before the Storm at roughly the same level as Life is Strange itself!

tazzy mentioned Ajin yesterday, is it good? I want to download episodes of a Netflix anime onto my phone to watch on an airplane ride tomorrow and I won't be able to switch if I don't like this one. Nothing else is jumping out at me, though.

Also I guess I should mention that I'll be going on a trip soon so if my turn to make a topic comes up in the next few weeks I probably won't be able to do it.

I just finished Aokana: Four Rhythm Across the Blue (which I watched because I'd realized I hadn't seen anything from Winter 2016 and this was the best looking anime from that season on Crunchyroll). This was also the first time I watched a VN adaptation rather than skipping it to eventually read the VN first, but this one didn't have an English release so oh well.

I thought it was fine for the most part but that flying sport didn't have enough rules to feel special. It was also kind of lame watching them come up with fairly basic tactics and have everyone act all amazed, like no one had ever thought to do that before. The characters were all really generic too.

I just finished Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls. It was okay but the humor never really evolved as the show went on. Still, it was fun! Snake girl is best girl (spider girl is terrifying).

After three months of very sporadic watching, I've finally finished A Certain Magical Index, including the movie. There were a few things I didn't like (quite often, characters would be portrayed as over-the-top super evil, and then they'd show up later and due to slightly different circumstances they're suddenly the good guys? Man, people in anime in general are way more forgiving than I would be) but overall I thought it was a fun show. Toma's power was always used in interesting ways and Index remained the best the whole way through. I was happy just to have her in the background biting Toma so it was always a plus that she was portrayed as competent when something entered her area of expertise. Index is a top ten anime character imho

I'll have to watch A Certain Scientific Railgun someday too.

I actually had time to watch episode one of Magical Girl Site right now. Maybe I just went into it with the right mindset after having seen comments from everyone else but honestly that didn't bother me at all. It tried so hard to be dark that it felt more like a parody than anything else.

As for quality... eh. I can see ways that this might become good I hope main girl snaps completely and just starts slaughtering everyone but I have a feeling it won't go that route. Without that, this will probably be bad but not in a way that'll infuriate me or anything. It has similar problems to MGRP, like how I could predict events just by considering what the most awful thing to happen would be, but this was upfront and honest about that right from the get-go and I can appreciate that. MGRP squandered legit potential by fumbling a bunch of cool characters and ideas. MGS, meanwhile, is already exactly what it wants to be. It'll probably be worse than MGRP overall but it'll bother me less, if that makes any sense.

Watamote is my favorite so I'll say a few things about it too. Tomoko is taken to a comedic, over-the-top extreme (which accounts for a lot of her less-than-stellar qualities that you mentioned), but I still relate to her a lot because she's such an accurate representation of social anxiety, something I also struggled with at that age (and still do to a lesser extent). Like, her inner thoughts and private actions were usually absurd, but when viewed from the outside this is all that anyone ever saw of her:



That may as well have been me trying to order something in high school, and a lot of other realistic moments in the anime could've been lifted straight from my life too. Tomoko feels like everyone is always watching her when, in reality, she's barely noticed by anyone. She spectacularly flubs the few chances at social interaction that she gets but even those barely leave a lasting impression. There was a sequence about her finding a quiet, out of the way place to eat lunch, and that was exactly what I did to survive my school years. The anime had a lot of moments like that, between the craziness.

Basically, I agree with what most people say about Watamote. Tomoko is a miserable person and she absolutely inflicts it on herself. That was never where I found the comedy, though, because to me that was just an excellent character study that nailed its representation of something I'm personally familiar with. The comedy of her thoughts and actions was great too, but the social anxiety was what elevates it to being my favorite.

Would it be worth watching the new MHA episode if I literally just watched through the series or is it primarily a recap? I skipped 13.5 at the start of season two.

Also I still have a few episodes left before I'm fully caught up but MHA is great and currently in my top five anime. Hopefully this is my first uncontroversial anime opinion.

Oh, absolutely. If this were one of my pet peeves I probably would've dropped the show early on. Luckily it wasn't!

I think it helped that I can see a quick and easy fix that would avoid the issue entirely. All they'd need to do is make it so Menma can't interact with physical objects except for her diary, which they don't get until later. Very little about the earlier episodes would need to change and it would fix the plot hole. Having a fanfiction explanation like that is usually enough for me to forgive logistical plot holes.
