I've finished the first season of Himouto! Umaru-chan. I was worried during the first few episodes because Umaru's brattiness was getting on my nerves, but she toned it down just enough as the season progressed that the anime became pretty good. I still liked every other character more than her though, especially her three friends. Sylphinford was the best! I hope she shows up a lot more in the second season.

In that case, I think the OP is like much more liked than the ED which makes me wonder why you didnt nominate that.

I wanted to nominate different songs than what I nominated on tazzy's list and I nominated the OP there. I actually prefer the ED though, especially once I saw the translated words in that other video (thank you for replacing the link) and realized what it was about. It fits the theme of the show really well, even more than the catchier OP.

I didn't want to include spoiler tags in those write-ups but my issue with citrus was it basically had the same plotline three times but it was more contrived each time. When Yuzu liked Mei but Mei's childhood friend was in the way, I was okay with that one. I was less okay when it was Mei maybe liking Yuzu but Yuzu's childhood friend was in the way. Then (after a random rejection just to keep the melodrama going) they might like each other but a series of contrived coincidences have them meet twins who are both in the way and by then I was just done. Three times was too much, they lost me and then I took a harsh look at earlier parts of the anime and its rank cratered.

I'd be okay with a second season redeeming it, though.

Yeah, I use the full 1-10 scale and try to keep an equal number of shows in each number, so if I suddenly watched a bunch of bad anime everything would bump up a tier. The numbers are fluid, basically.

Um, it's not though. The initial joke surrounding him is that he gives off that impression, but it's made pretty clear that he just sees kids as irresistibly adorable. It's weird, yeah, but harmless.

That was how they tried to portray it but then every time he showed up the kids who were old enough to understand it were freaked out and everyone tried to keep him away from them so it felt like mixed signals. He was uncomfortable either way, though.

citrus (1/10)
citrus follows Yuzu and Mei, two step-sisters who find themselves exploring the possibility romance. I enjoyed citrus a lot in the beginning, but it turned out I was giving it too much credit by assuming it would actually explore a relationship between its two main characters. Instead the anime seemed content to wallow in increasingly contrived melodrama. I also started to really hate Mei for her cold aloofness compared to Yuzu's honest warmth, which made the central relationship impossible to root for. By the end I was just glad it was over.

Record of Grancrest War (1/10)
This is about a world where power resides in crest-wielding lords who battle each other to try and increase their influence. It started okay when it was just mindless Dynasty Warriors/Fire Emblem battles, but as the scope of the setting expanded it steadily became clear just how uninspired and nonsensical this world is. There are two major factions who are at war but I honestly couldn't tell you why or even what the difference between them is. Major characters are doing things for seemingly no reason, too, making themselves miserable just... because? And I haven't even mentioned the pacing, which is so fast that it's impossible to truly connect with any of these bland characters.

Darling in the FranXX (1/10)
I don't like it.

Junji Ito Collection (1/10)
This is a series of short horror stories. I don't know anything about Junji Ito's work but everything I've heard tells me the source material is waaaaay better than this anime. There are a lot of things I could say (bad art, bad direction, bad voice acting...) but the single most damning criticism is that the people working on this simply didn't seem care, and that apathy bled into every aspect of the production to create a thoroughly underwhelming product. I didn't like Grancrest or FranXX but I could at least tell that they were trying.

School Babysitters (3/10)
This is about a teen who joins a babysitting club after losing his parents in order to look after his young brother. School Babysitters never had a whole lot of depth beyond the rare poignant moment, but the kids were adorable and there were a lot of good gags. However, watching it often left a bad taste in my mouth from the ways abuse and neglect were frequently turned into jokes. One character regularly beat his baby brother and seriously threatened the other kids. The main caretaker couldn't keep track of these kids to save his life and I'm honestly surprised none of them died while he was napping. Another character was very strongly hinted to be a pedophile. I still found a lot of enjoyment from this anime's cutesy elements, but they clashed so harshly with the uncomfortable aspects. Besides, How to Keep a Mummy was a far more adorable anime this season.

Violet Evergarden (3/10)
This story follows the titular character as she returns from a traumatic war and takes a job writing letters. The best way I can describe Violet Evergarden is that it's uneven, having a few tremendous episodes spread out amongst a terrible central plotline. Violet herself doesn't make any sense within the context of the setting, being literally the only child soldier shown and the only female soldier shown, both with no explanation and little reaction from almost anyone else. However, while her character was frequently insufferable during her quest to learn emotions, she did prove to be an excellent foil when inserted into the correct stories. There are several top-tier episodes that manage to hit genuine emotional highs. Sadly, these stand in harsh contrast to the crummy main plotline. The animation and production in VE are both strong, and if it leaned more into its strengths and less into its weaknesses I feel like it could've been something special rather than the faulty product that it wound up being for me.

B: The Beginning (3/10)
This follows a group of detectives investigating a series of bizarre murders committed by a killer known only as 'B'. There were a lot of good things about this anime with several characters being decent, and the animation/action was stellar. However, the major failing for me is that the plot feels disjointed. This is essentially two separate stories that someone glued together, and I don't feel like they did a very good job. Either one on its own, if given time to breathe, probably would've ranked a lot higher. Sadly, the combined final product wound up being mediocre for me.

Devilman Crybaby (2/10)
This is the story of a good-hearted crybaby who gets turned into the titular Devilman, and he uses his powers for good by fighting evil. I know a lot of people really liked this anime but I don't have a whole lot to say about it. It's weird, I watched the whole thing and by the end I barely had an opinion about it. The action and characters were fine, the art style was unique if nothing else, and the story accomplished what it set out to do. However, despite all of that, none of it really resonated with me. It's rare for a piece of fiction to impact me this little but there you go I guess. This is the dividing line between shows I liked at least a little bit and shows I didn't like.

The Ancient Magus' Bride (2/10)
This is a fantasy anime about a cursed young woman named Chise who is taken in by a mage named Elias. I personally found this anime underwhelming, primarily that Chise and Elias were exceedingly boring characters. Chise spent most of her time stumbling from one situation to the next with a bland look on her face and seemingly having no strong opinions about what was happening around her. Elias, meanwhile, barely developed at all even though there were a lot of neat ways his character could've been explored. The magical aspects of the setting were also largely nonsensical so nothing about this appealed to me.

How to Keep a Mummy (4/10)
This is about a high-school student who takes care of an adorable baby mummy, and there are other mythical creatures too. Mii-kun the mummy is absolutely adorable and I never got tired of watching him interact with other characters and the world at large. However, that's honestly the only thing this anime has going for it. Still, at least it accomplished what it set out to do.

Mitsuboshi Colors (4/10)
This follows a group of three trouble-making girls who play around in their town. There isn't a whole lot to it beyond the gags, which are solid, but my favorite thing is the sense of adventure these girls always have. Mitsuboshi Colors captured the essence of childlike wonder that I remember from my own days with friends on the playground, back when all we needed was each other and our imagination to have a good time. The side characters that they interacted with were always fun too, playing off the girls in different ways.

The Ryuo's Work is Never Done (4/10)
This anime is about a high-level shogi player who takes on a talented child as his disciple. I don't know anything about shogi and the story never really goes anywhere special, but the shogi girls were cute enough to make it fun to watch regardless. I don't have anything else to say, in my opinion this is a cutesy anime with a generic message about doing your best.

After the Rain (3/10)
This anime follows a high school girl who has a crush on the older man who manages the restaurant where she works. I'll give After the Rain credit for a lot of things, primarily that it took a concept that easily could've been uncomfortable and handled it with a surprising amount of care. However, the relationship between the main characters was still the story's major failing for me. While the main characters both grew as the anime progressed, I never got the impression that they grew because of their interactions with each other, especially when they both connected far more with other characters in their own separate plotlines. Without that central aspect to provide an emotional foundation the whole anime fell kind of flat for me.

Marchen Madchen (3/10)
This is the story of Hazuki, a shy, friendless girl who stumbles into a world of magic and discovers her own powers. The concept is fairly generic and the pacing isn't great, but I still enjoyed this anime. Hazuki was a lot of fun, as were several side characters (go Team Russia!). However, I also need to mention the fact that the production for this anime went off the rails halfway through, to the point where the last two episodes were basically cancelled. The animation quality took a serious dive, too... but in my opinion it became kind of endearingly terrible. I got the sensation that the people working on this were trying their absolute best with the time and resources that they had and I couldn't help but root for them. I definitely wouldn't recommend this anime to anyone else, especially since it doesn't have an ending yet, but following along with Marchen Madchen was one of the most interesting experiences of the season for me and I don't regret it at all.

Teasing Master Takagi-san (3/10)
This is about two middle school students who try to tease each other, though it's a rather lopsided battle since Takagi-san is the undisputed teasing master. This anime reminded me a lot of another anime, Tsuredure Children, except instead of following a bunch of couples with their own unique interactions it followed only one and all they had was teasing. On the one hand that isn't a bad thing because their teasing is cute and Takagi was a fun character. However, I just didn't feel like the teasing was enough on its own to fill twelve episodes. It ended right before I grew completely tired of the premise but I was still left with the feeling that this anime was ultimately nothing special.

A Place Further than the Universe (9/10)
This is about a group of four girls who, each for the own reasons, strive to go on a trip to Antarctica. I've already talked about this show so I'll just reiterate that the four girls are all excellent characters who played off of each other well. Everything else about it is solid too, from the animation to the pacing to the emotional highs. Watching this always left me with a sense of wonder and, oddly, a sense of regret. I'm an adult now so a story about trying to live life to the fullest is about fifteen years too late for me. Still, the fact that this anime could elicit such feelings is impressive and it's one of the few I would recommend to anyone without reservations.

Killing Bites (7/10)
This is a story about people who have been spliced with animal genes who use their powers to transform and fight each other. It isn't the most high-concept idea but Killing Bites know exactly what it wants to be and it more than lives up to that goal. Most of the characters are edgy but they're portrayed with enough awareness to be fun instead of annoying. The battles are all great too, filled with cool moves and interesting animal facts. This anime is indisputably trash, but if you're able to turn your mind off and accept it for what it is then it's also highly enjoyable trash.

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (6/10)
This anime follows various assassins in a town where one tenth of the population is an assassin. Its an absurd setting, but Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens never takes itself seriously enough for that to matter. This is about fun characters and neat battles during the various situations they encounter. Like Killing Bites, it's mostly mindless action fun that's fun to indulge in every once in awhile, but unlike Killing Bites I don't think there are many elements for people to be turned off by.

Slow Start (5/10)
This anime is about a shy girl who had to take a year off of school, which is apparently a huge deal in Japan so she switches schools to make new friends and keep it a secret. As far as slice-of-life hooks go this is one of the weakest I've seen, so it's lucky that Slow Start doesn't rely on it too much. This anime quickly becomes about a group of characters, each quirky in their own way, and the fun interactions they have together. Hana, the main character, was fairly weak, but everyone else was excellent, even most of the side characters. Tama was by far my favorite, bringing a high-energy vibe and lewd sense of humor to every scene that she was in. Eiko had a lot of good moments too, particularly when interacting with her teacher. I also have to give credit to the animation, which was always consistently high quality. It didn't come anywhere near Laid-Back Camp or A Place Further than the Universe, but this was still a solid slice-of-life anime.

Kokkoku (5/10)
This is the story of people who use an artifact that can stop time to try and rescue their family members from a kidnapping... only to find themselves caught up in something far more dangerous than they'd imagined. I enjoyed Kokkoku quite a bit, mostly because of the unique premise and a lot of neat ideas it managed to have on top of that. However, the overall presentation left a lot to be desired. The pacing was often disjointed and a lot of plot elements were left up to blind luck or deus ex machina, which is always unsatisfying. I also felt that a lot of the characters were never really explored. I'd still recommend this to anyone who likes the premise, and it would probably be a lot more fun to watch all at once rather than weekly, but I wouldn't say Kokkoku was anything more than average.

I wrote stuff about the 2018 anime I've seen so far. Violet Evergarden has one episode left and Amazon Prime sucks and has only uploaded the German subtitles for Killing Bites Ep12 so I'm not done that either but oh well. To the people who don't care, sorry for the incoming five huge posts.

Anime of the Season: Katana Maidens (10/10)
This is set in a world where young girls called toji battle aradama, other-worldly creatures that threaten society. Before I continue, I want to say that the premise doesn't do this anime justice. It makes it sound like something where undeveloped blob monsters show up every episode to be mindlessly slashed at. In truth, Katana Maidens is about a deep conspiracy and how the characters learn about it and struggle against it.

Anyway, I adore this anime, but at the same time I recognize this is largely because almost everything it does appeals to me specifically. The main character, Kanami, is upbeat and perceptive in exactly the ways I love. Every other major character is great in their own ways too, as are the side characters (with one exception but I can mostly look past her). The battles are a lot of fun too, having a lot more strategy and finesse than I've seen in most other shows so far. Katana Maidens isn't flawless, as it occasionally uses CGI models as a cost-cutting measure. While these might be deal-breakers for other people, though, I was able to easily look past them and instead focus on the anime's strengths. The story in particular sucked me in almost immediately as the characters tried to keep ahead of a far greater enemy. The action and tension steadily built until it hit a peak of absolute hype. And it isn't even over yet! Katana Maidens still has twelve episodes to go and I have every reason to believe it's only going to get better. I'm not sure if it'll be my anime of the year but I will say the next three seasons have their work cut out for them if they want to surpass it.

A.I.C.O.: Incarnation (10/10)
This story follows a young girl named Aiko who learns that she might be the key to stopping a rampant growth of artificial matter that went haywire years ago, taking over a region of Japan and threatening the world if it breaches containment. While it has a lot of sci-fi concepts that take awhile to become clear and there are a few loose threads in the plot, AICO is still a well put-together story with a lot of elements that really appealed to me. The story has a focused objective that it sticks to with very little meandering, the setting and action scenes were both great, and the characters fit their roles well (special mention goes to the main character Aiko who quickly became one of my favorites in anime). I doubt it would appeal to anyone else as much as it did to me but I still highly recommend checking it out, it's a solid story where every almost aspect comes together in a satisfying way.

Laid-Back Camp (10/10)
This follows a group of girls who discover the joys of camping and friendship. Laid-Back Camp was my favorite of the season for quite awhile but it eventually hit a (very high) plateau of quality while AICO and Katana Maidens managed to surpass it. Anyway, this was an incredibly heartwarming iyashikei/slice-of-life anime featuring several fun characters, and it was all built around the inherently relaxing hobby of camping. Rin (a thoughtful introvert) and Nadeshiko (highly energetic and endlessly fun) were both great, with their differences allowing them to play off of each other well, but I enjoyed the side characters too like Aoi, Aki, and the cute puppy. The pacing was always steady, the art style was soft, and just... everything about this anime was warm, comfy, and wonderful.

This was too long ago for me to still feel passionate about it and we probably shouldn't turn the topic into a long discussion about this but if you're curious (KnK movie seven spoilers) The glasses dude was like "Shiki don't you dare kill this mass murderer, killing is always wrong and I'll never forgive you", which was extra stupid because it's not like they had some other plan to deal with him. I'm also of the opinion that sometimes people just need to be killed so this element didn't work for me at all, especially since Shiki had already killed people by this point in the story and he didn't care, and he didn't care when that other girl killed people in movie three but oh well. Then Shiki tries to deal with the killer but she's handicapped because she can't kill the guy so of course she gets captured and the killer starts undressing her and drooling on her in one of the most uncomfortable, meaningless scenes I've ever seen. Then the glasses dude tracks her down only to get taken out by the killer, fed a supposedly lethal dose of drugs (which doesn't kill him for some reason) and then he's stabbed in the head (but of course the mass murderer didn't kill him, it's not like he's good at killing people or anything and of course he didn't check). Then Shiki kills the mass-murderer anyway and the glasses dude stumbles in and is like 'lol that's fine I forgive you' so that whole awful build-up didn't even amount to anything. It was like the movie was designed from the ground-up out of plot elements and character motivations that I wouldn't have liked even if they were handled well, and they weren't handled well at all.

Plus one of the major plot elements was literally a Simpsons joke. A drug ten times deadlier than marijuana!

I nominated this because you were one of the few who seemed to agree with me that these movies weren't all amazing so I wanted to see your thoughts. Obviously I liked them a lot less than you did (7 in particular is absolute trash and I don't understand how anyone can like it, but at this point I know better than to rant about things so I'll move on). Most of the rest were just confusing and/or boring, largely for the reasons you said. It did have good production and action scenes, though.
