VICE - The leading Republican running for Paul Ryans seat is a white nationalist

Longshot candidate and self-described pro-white politician Paul Nehlen is now the leading Republican to take over Ryans Wisconsin seat now that Ryan, the current Speaker of the House, is not running for reelection.

Nehlen incited international outrage in February, when he tweeted a photo of Prince Harrys fiance Meghan Markle with an image of a dark-skinned, prehistoric human known as Cheddar Man. (Markles mother is black.) Alongside the image, Nehlen tweeted, Honey, does this tie make my face look pale?

That racist tweet prompted Twitter to permanently ban Nehlen, though it wasnt the first time hed drawn criticism on the platform. In January, he posted a list of his critics and claimed most of them were Jewish. Hes also used the hashtag #ItsOkayToBeWhite, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which dubbed Nehlen an outrage artist.

HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW - Why Staff Turnover in the White House Is Such a Bad Thing Especially For President Trump

Theres little reason to think were about to see a turnaround. This president prides himself on doing things differently, and of going with his gut instead of following the advice of experts like me. Not only would changing his approach to talent management likely be low on his list of priorities, theres little reason to think he could change even if he wanted to: the Presidential Personnel Office (the office tasked with, among other responsibilities, staffing the White House) is less than a third of its size in previous Administrations, and the only work experience many members of its staff have is working on the Trump campaign. Two of its most senior officials have records that include being arrested for drunken driving, passing bad checks, and assault. The Trump Administrations problems in staffing seem to be hindering the very organization responsible for fixing them.

Any President needs help, and one with no previous experience in government needs it more. Some of Trumps appeal to his supporters was grounded in his defiant insistence on taking an approach that is radically different from that of his predecessors. My research focuses on leaders like that I call them unfiltered leaders. They can tend to be either enormously successful or catastrophic failures. One thing the successful ones all have in common is that they pick their spots. No leader, even the most brilliant, can be different in all things all the time. Precisely because unfiltered leaders are often making choices and pushing policies that no one else would, they need to surround themselves with capable teams even more than ordinary leaders do, much as Lincoln did with his legendary Team of Rivals. Trumps management of the White House has made it virtually impossible for him to surround himself with a top-notch team, even though he needs one even more than a normal president would.

The dysfunctions of the White House staff have been apparent during the first 15 months of the Trump presidency. The President may well feel that he thrives amid the chaos. But if you believe as I do that great leaders need strong teams behind them, his administration is likely to slide into even deeper disarray.

Good article on just how much this high turnover rate matters. It's not just retraining people: they're having issues staffing the people who are supposed to find new people. People leaving this administration don't have the same high-end job opportunities past administrations got for their people leaving their administations, meaning the White House is becoming a career-limiter more than a career-enhancer.

And in a way, good -- Spicer knew what he signed up for, for example, as do some of the more morally dubious people Donald hired -- but it's a bad trend for public service.

VICE - Congress's Biggest Opponent of Net Neutrality Is Getting Destroyed in Midterm Election Polls

A new poll by Middle Tennessee State University finds that Blackburn is trailing her Democratic rival (Former Tennessee Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen) by 10 points as she tries to leap from the House to the Senate. Worries of underperformance have been plaguing Blackburn for months, fueling speculation that Bob Corker (whose seat she hopes to take) may be forced out of retirement to retain the contested seat.

Blackburns chances werent helped when consumer advocacy groups like Fight For the Future placed giant billboards in Blackburns home district naming and shaming the lawmaker for selling consumers out on net neutrality and privacy.

Most recently, Blackburn, at industry behest, has introduced a fake net neutrality bill so full of loopholes as to be arguably useless. Its real purpose? To prevent tougher state net neutrality rules from taking effect, and to prevent the FCCs 2015 net neutrality rules from being restored should the FCC and ISPs lose in court (and theres a solid chance of that happening).

I don't think Kushner/Ivanka were bribing Planned Parenthood in the illegal sense, but in a dishonest sense I'd say they were using money to persuade an organization to stop providing a service after so many of their donors have paid them to support that service. I could see bribery in that ethical definition, but legally I don't know that you can call it worse than strong-arming.

Either way, I kinda doubt Planned Parenthood would stop being a target anytime soon or would get the deals they were promised if they did cut abortion.

According to a statement from Planned Parenthood given to Time.com, the purpose of the meeting was to make sure that Ivanka Trump fully understood the important role Planned Parenthood plays in providing health care to millions of people and why it would be a disastrous idea to block people from accessing care at Planned Parenthood.

After Richards explained this, she writes that Kushner told her Planned Parenthood had made a big mistake by becoming political.

The main issue, he explained, was abortion, Richards writes. If Planned Parenthood wanted to keep our federal funding, we would have to stop providing abortions. He described his ideal outcome: a national headline reading Planned Parenthood Discontinues Abortion Services.'

According to Make Trouble, Kushner said that if Richards agreed to the plan then funding could increase, but he urged them to move fast.

If it wasnt crystal clear before, it was now. Jared and Ivanka were there for one reason: to deliver a political win, she writes. In their eyes, if they could stop Planned Parenthood from providing abortions, it would confirm their reputation as savvy dealmakers. It was surreal, essentially being asked to barter away womens rights for more money. It takes a lot to get Kirk mad, but it looked like his head was about to explode.

TEXAS TRIBUNE - Beto O'Rourke says he raised staggering $6.7M in first quarter of 2018

U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-El Paso, raised over $6.7 million for his U.S. Senate bid in the first quarter of 2018, according to his campaign, a staggering number that poses a new category of threat to Republican incumbent Ted Cruz.

The haul is easily O'Rourke's biggest fundraising quarter yet, more than double his next-closest total for a three-month period. It also is more than any Democratic Senate candidate nationwide took in last quarter, O'Rourke's campaign said.

Cruz has not released his first-quarter fundraising numbers yet, but O'Rourke's $6.7 million total is on a different level than his previous hauls, which ranged from $1.7 million to $2.4 million. Those alone were good enough to outraise Cruz for three of the last four reporting periods.

Furthermore, the $6.7 million total came from more than 141,000 contributions another record-busting number for O'Rourke.

NPR - Kentucky Lawmakers Limit Black Lung Claims Reviews Despite Epidemic

Just six pulmonologists in Kentucky have the federal certification to read black lung X-rays and four of them routinely are hired by coal companies or their insurers, according to an NPR review of federal black lung cases.

The two remaining pulmonologists have generally assessed X-rays on behalf of coal miners but one is semi-retired and his federal certification expires June 1.

Among the radiologists excluded by the law is Dr. Brandon Crum, who helped expose the biggest clusters ever documented of complicated black lung, the advanced stage of the fatal disease that strikes coal miners.

"I do believe the coal industry is writing this bill to exclude certain doctors that they don't like," said Phillip Wheeler, an attorney in Pikeville, Ky., who represents coal miners seeking state black lung benefits.
