i don't even know if people remember that Melee was considered "dead/dying" for a time or at least in a "Dark Age". it was just that Brawl was viewed as so awful by a large portion of the competitive community that they continued playing/went back to Melee. they literally called one tournament series "Revival of Melee"

there are still smaller dedicated communities today who still play older games, hosting gatherings, smaller tournaments and whatnot. Super Turbo and 3S are the more notable ones afaik.

Melee is a notable case in that its resurgence wasn't only old players coming back but a sizable group of younger, new players joining the competitive community.

they've acknowledged the last donation drive as a mistake so i wouldn't bet on it.

i think they did announce some charity thing this year but it's not for a game to get into EVO. it was a partnership with Humble Bundle for Puerto Rico or something.

yeah they're games i at least see immediate benefit to buying at release

i mean i know this isn't exactly the most appealing group of games for most people but i liked most of them so ultimately whatever. i could actually move up everything in that second tier to the "no regrets" because it's not the purchase i regret but my time usage at the time i bought those.

already got my next $60 purchase planned - SoulCalibur VI. there's a chance i'll get burned but i'm not passing up Soulcalibur at launch. nothing else i'm looking forward to though, thankfully.

No Regret:
Persona 5 - i actually feel like this was even a bit of a deal with all the stuff that was included WHICH I ACTUALLY LIKE
BBCP - surprisingly probably spent the most time playing this out of all the fighting games here because i actually had offline AND online people to play with + how fun Amane was
ToS CE - i've played through this like 4 times. definitely a flawed game and some lazy porting but at least we got the PS2 changes. i'm just super attached to the cast + nostalgia

Small Regret only because i didn't play them as much as i would have liked:
Tekken 7 - actually my fav Tekken and it'
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax - messy game but also i had some other stuff going on
GG Xrd - by the time Revelator came out i had only gone through some training mode stuff and next to no actual matches
Persona Q - i would have bought this regardless but could have done without the CE

Regret:
Tekken Tag 2 - i don't think much of this game. i would have still bought it but definitely regret full price.

Massive Regret:
Mass Effect Andromeda - i shouldn't have bought this game at all. played two hours and have no intention of playing more. but i should have known better because i knew how i felt about open world games.

bought dragon ball today and when the cashier said "$65.69" i was like daaamn that's a lot. since i've been keeping track of how much i spent on games, i realized that it was the tenth game that i've spent that much $$ on ever whaaaa.

I think them being Tag games means it's mostly eating Marvel.

but they don't really play like each other. other than the obvious 2v2/3v3 comparison, Marvel has much more emphasis on team synergy and characters as a unit whereas DB is more 1v1 based with a sprinkle of assists. and it's not like there's a "Tag game" community. even with Marvel 3, Marvel players were more likely to play SF4 if anything else because they were both "Capcom games" instead of Arcsys "anime" ones.

i think Marvel Infinite was in an unfortunate situation that got a lot of bad publicity since its development stage and people (including those who had no plans of ever playing it) proclaiming it as a dead game from the start scared off a bunch of people who were on the fence. the whole "Marvel is dead" meme got started later in UMvC3's scene when the playerbase became smaller but more dedicated (like almost every other game years after release) but still had consistently solid numbers at tournaments. and with people so readily claiming 2017 as the "final" year of Marvel 3 after Infinite's announcement the stage was set for disaster. i don't think Dragon Ball can claim a majority of the credit for Marvel's failure despite that being the prevailing narrative out there.

Dragon Ball drains a bit of the player base from every game, not just Marvel. i'd say there's more of a player overlap between DB and GG/BB than DB and Marvel because of the same developer if anything.

and in the past every time they pointed to any argument regarding player base, it had to do with tournament numbers because a large portion of casuals will not go to tournaments and have no bearing on the competitive scene so understandably some people have raised eyebrows when they hear that "nobody's playing it' and point out that Marvel Infinite had relatively solid tournament numbers.
