makes sense to me, is there any other show that has managed to maintain its ratings as well as BBT?

why

http://ew.com/tv/2017/10/03/the-gifted-big-bang-theory-ratings/

Foxs new superhero drama The Gifted premiered on Monday but it was The Big Bang Theory that demonstrated who has the real superpowers in primetime on broadcast TV.

The CBS comedy was the nights most watched entertainment program at 13.6 million, according to very early returns from Nielsen, beating The Good Doctor on ABC (11.4 million) and The Voice on NBC (10.7 million). Big Bang Theory was also the nights best performer among adults 18-49 (3.0 rating). Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.189 million adults in that demo.

overall, BBT is below it's peak in terms of ratings but this season has been a huge improvement from last season as far as that is concerned. 4th highest viewership for a season premiere on BBT during a time when most shows are losing viewers

I totally agree with this.

I DO question the extent to which people are different in different states or regions, though. For instance...

MS: Soul food.
MO: BBQ, pizza, more middle-america food is popular.

MS: "Let's go sit on the front porch and shoot squirrels."
MO: "Let's go to a winery this afternoon!"

this seems like a caricature of MS and an unusually optimistic reading of MO to me, personally, but it's just as likely that the sorts of areas and people I've interacted with in those places are just different than the ones Asherlee has interacted with. No one talks about shooting squirrels in Southaven, MS, they talk about going to Beale St. on the weekend. Conversely, the scrubouts I know in MO are hick farmers and meth heads.

I dunno man, there are differences but they aren't easy to pinpoint and they're pretty variable depending on location within the region

http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/353902-senate-homeland-security-chairman-backs-bump-stock-ban-after-las-vegas

Johnson said he was not aware of so-called bump stocks until Monday, when the nation woke up to news of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history the night before in Las Vegas.

Johnson noted that its already illegal for citizens to purchase fully-automatic guns manufactured after 1986 or possess guns that have not gone through a costly and time-consuming registration process with the federal government.

....
Other Republicans have voiced support for the proposal.

Rep. Bill Flores (R-Texas), the former chairman of the Republican Study Committee, told The Hill on Wednesday that he would back a bump-stock ban.

A bump stock uses the recoil of a semi-automatic rifle to slide a gun back and forth so that it bumps rapidly against the trigger finger. That allows a person to shoot 400 to 600 rounds a minute with a single trigger squeeze.

Congress heavily regulated the sale and transfer of machine guns by passing the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, which made it illegal for civilians to possess machine guns manufactured after May of that year.

A better comparison would be owning a car. We feel people have the right to drive and that it's a necessary function of our every day lives. We'd never dream of taking away cars because we simply could not function without them. But owning a car is dangerous, and not just to yourself. But despite the tens of thousands of people who die from car accidents every year in America, you still have cars. Cars are an everyday necessity (and thing that people enjoy) and I think more or less everyone agrees on that point.

i just would like to point out that I (personally) think dealing with deaths related to cars is a very pressing issue

more pressing than gun control for sure

but that doesn't mean I want to 'ban cars' -- any more than I want to 'ban guns'

I'm not sure there is good evidence that SNAP benefits improve health outcomes or reduce health expenditures. At least, I do not know of any, and I have looked since I worked in program development for state's SNAP workfare program. The issue, I think, being the subsidization of the purchase of sugar-sweetened beverages, which sort of crowds out the positive impacts of general access to food -- iirc

There is much better evidence that cash transfers (e.g., EITC, CTC) do this, though.

edit -- there's also pretty good evidence for young kids benefitting from SNAP and WIC
