This so much, especially the bold. I'm currently renting a basement in a gated, upper class community with security "guards" at each entrance and we've had a multiple break ins reported this year. Hell, someone was jumped by a few people last month and a neighbor chased them away when he came outside with his gun. Not sure what happened to him but the victim got fucked up.

Shit just happens and no place is safe.

gated communities promote this type of behavior by substituting eyes on the street and social capital with formal security arrangements like the one you just mentioned

it's actually a fairly well-studied phenomenon, just like how cul de sacs are awful for traffic accidents, but what is smart urban development is rarely politically popular

enhanced gun control would prevent homicides, most likely:

https://tinyurl.com/yax9jbwu

This study estimates the impact of
Missouris 2007 repeal of its permit-to-purchase (PTP) handgun law on states homicide rates
and controls for changes in poverty, unemployment, crime, incarceration, policing levels, and
other policies that could potentially affect homicides. Using death certificate data available
through 2010, the repeal of Missouris PTP law was associated with an increase in annual
increase in firearm homicides rates of 1.09 per 100,000 (+23%), but was unrelated to changes in
non-firearm homicide rates.

The difference in costs and income is then passed on to the uninsured in the form of higher prices, since they are one of the few groups that hospitals are allowed to charge higher rates for (as opposed to people on private insurance, medicaid, or medicare)

Does The_Admiral do this with other things? It sounds like his MO, but I don't recall ever seeing him defending muslim bans or talking about Islam as an issue the way many other conservative posters like Mal_Fet and darkjedilink do.

Mostly I seem to see him talking about how black people commit more crimes than white people per capita, which is true even when you control for poverty. I would, and have, argued with him about how that should be interpreted in the past but I've never seen him do this.

Most employers look at 7 years unemployed and think "so no one was willing to hire this guy for 7 years, what the hell did he do to make himself so undesireable as an employee and why the hell should I waste time with this guy ?!".

honestly most businesses won't care more about 7 years than 1 year (or even 6 months)

after being unemployed for that long your chances go down really dramatically

Or that while white people are vastly underrepresented as perps for domestic/gang-related shootings, they are only slightly underrepresented as mass shooters of this type?

yes, I do find that interesting

it's even more interesting, imo, that white men are like 74% of gun suicides, but black men are less than 5% of gun suicides.

white women are another 10% of gun suicides, so overall white people are roughly 85% of gun suicides despite being 64% of the population

A synthetic control is a control group that is constructed synthetically in order to compare to the treatment group so that an analysis of the treatment can be made. It is common in social science, because finding a random control in reality can be exceedingly difficult -- in order to 'really' test it, you would need another Missouri or Connecticut that didn't (pass or repeal) gun legislation.

To be fair, a synthetic control group can be more or less well-constructed. It was a subject of debate in the recent kerfuffle around minimum wage studies in Seattle.

I really don't understand what argument you're trying to make or your rhetoric around it.

edit -- if anything it would make more sense to make a distinction between mass shootings as they are typically defined (4+ people) and the kind of mass shootings that get media attention, which are typically much higher than single digits and which are probably disproportionately white dudes

There is some disconnect between what is more likely and what has actually happened.

It can both be true that black people are more likely to commit mass shootings than white people, and that white people commit most mass shootings.

For a similar instance, black people are more likely to be on some form of public assistance than white people are, but more white people are on public assistance.

The disconnect is that the two phrases refer to different statistics. It is useful to use the term per capita (or per person) the way the_admiral originally did in his rejoinder to keep these two facts distinct.

Why are you so interested in what the popular imagination conjures when someone talks about mass shootings? I don't really care about that at all.

Because it is usually based on what has actually happened, not what is statistically more likely. What I'm getting at is, it doesn't say much to bring up that black people are statisically more likely to commit mass shootings in the face of reality and what has actually happened.

It's interesting you say that, the reason I used the counter-example that I did is that the popular idea about welfare recipients is that they are black, but that is not true.

well, to argue the other side, better background checks would stop some mass shootings

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/10/politics/background-checks-mass-shootings/index.html

"The one shooter that might have been prevented by background checks and was not was the Virginia Tech shooter because he had, in fact, been adjudicated to be potentially violent," said National Rifle Association President David Keene.
Seung-Hui Cho, who killed 32 people in 2007 on the picturesque Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, had been deemed mentally ill by a judge, which is one of the criteria used to disqualify certain people trying to buy a gun. Others who could be potentially disqualified include convicted felons, fugitives, drug addicts and domestic abusers.
Cho's case apparently slipped through the cracks and the state of Virginia has since instituted a series of reforms in its reporting procedures to NICS as a result.

However, it would not stop the majority. The biggest beneficiaries would probably be lonely old men who kill themselves, followed by sad women who are abused by their husbands

No, not really. I'm not anti-gun, I literally just posted in another topic that I didn't think enhanced gun control would stop mass shooting (though it would stop other types of gun violence).

FLUFFYGERM is butthurt because I used the nuclear suitcase argument when he made a topic called "taking away people's rights won't stop mass killings" which is obviously false. And if you're intellectually honest about that position, you would be okay with nuclear weapons in civilian hands unless you really do think that taking away rights (to nuclear arms in that case) would stop mass killings. Or do you disagree with that?
