Faxes are mostly used in medical and legal work and never in real life. It makes sense that your average person isn't gonna know how to use one. It's no longer a basic necessary skill, even in an office setting.

Ive worked in retail, and I did not get tips for answering the phone or 'taking' orders. I should've complained every time!

Not to mention, when I did cook, I would have to cook multiple orders at once, and get the servers to take out the food. I deserved tips!

lol I wasn't saying take out deserves tips...

I only said it was harder than serving, which it is.

I've heard this so many times, can you explain why is that? How exactly is the server involved in the process for a take-out order?

I don't have big moral concerns over age of consent like many people do, really, my main thing is that I can't imagine how I would get into contact with a high schooler as an adult. and going out of your way to find one seems hella sketchy. I've been taught that fax machines should be avoided since they csn easily violate HIPAA guidelines

Fax machines have all but disappeared in most industries, but continue to thrive in health care.

Part of the reason is tradition, as many older doctors simply feel comfortable with the technology and refuse to let it go.

It's also considered safe and secure under today's privacy laws. HIPAA, the federal regulations that govern how patient health records are shared, specifically state that fax machines or mail are acceptable methods for doctors to transmit a medical record.

Health care has also been slower to digitize than other sectors.

Until recently, most patient medical records were stored on paper. It took a huge investment of federal dollars to incentivize doctors to adopt digital systems, known as electronic medical records. But it remains a challenge for doctors to share patient information, especially with hospitals that use a different electronic medical record vendor.

San Francisco specifically, yeah.

The salaries are higher, but not necessarily to the extent people think that they are. I make roughly 50k in central arkansas and I would argue that I am more affluent than someone making 100k in the NYC/SF metro areas due to the additional costs in those places, for instance.

Well, when you put it that way!

It's 1/4 of a big salary though. So there's $75k of gross left over after rent. That's significant.

but if you wanted to live in a good part of the city it would be more like 3.5k a month, or like 45k a year

yeah I agree that these people aren't poor but also it is true that they face big cost burdens

even if you move then you just replace housing costs with transit costs. and you gotta deal with traffic on 101 for like 3 hours a day.

Is Nate "molten" Silver still relevant after the 2016 election

more relevant, not less

the idea that nate got it wrong about trump is one of the most persistent, and most blatant, lies about the 2016 campaign prediction process

he outlined the exact path trump would need to win with, the probability of it happening (which he put at approx 30% EDIT: 28.6%) and noted that it would have to also be a case of winning the EC without the popular vote, because clinton had a lock on the popular vote.

the scenario he outlined as a potential trump win--ultra narrow victories in all the swing states--was the scenario that occurred.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-election-forecast/

It was too little, too late. Nate came out hard against Trump, saying he had close to no chance early on:
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2015/09/15/nate_silver_trump_has_about_5_chance_of_winning.html

He starting hedging himself closer to the election (which puts him above the idiots at HuffPo), but he deserves the criticism he gets after be hailed as some "election guru" who had insights that no one else did.

this is literally about the primary anyway

is it really so ridiculous to think Trump didn't have a great chance? that shook down more or less the way Nate Silver ultimately predicted as well iirc with the GOP establishment failing to ever coalesce around a single option allowing Trump to squeak by on the strength of a limited but passionate base

Remember, Trump only got like 45% of the primary vote too. He was a very beatable candidate, only Kasich and Rubio and Jeb! would not allow each other to take the lane

these lefty arguments against the UBI are very asinine and apply equally (or in even greater force) to every other form of public assistance

maybe it is true that they are all ways of pacifying the working classes (I would conceptualize it differently but it isn't necessarily wrong) but it's no less true for cash transfers than it is for, like, universal health care. except that market friendly people proposed the UBI so it's bad

I mean the logic behind replacing the some social services with the UBI was the same logic used in the ACA, reducing medicare spending down the road under the assumption that expanded health coverage would lower long term costs... which I realize is also a neoliberal policy to pacify the working class, but what isn't these days?

the 40%-60% rate is very reasonable (60% is on the high side) when talking about all taxes and not just income taxes (why would you just be talking about income taxes, anyway?)

also, it literally is true in other countries even just for the income tax:

http://money.cnn.com/2013/04/01/pf/taxes/top-income-tax/index.html

At 60.2%, Denmark last year had the highest top personal income tax rate among the 34 countries in the OECD, an organization of developed and emerging countries. And that 60.2% applied to income over roughly $55,000.
