Also can vouch as a Yuffie fan that we do tend to rate Barret higher than most of the cast if my ranking says anything

That being said he'd have to make a pretty deep run for me to ever consider saving him. I do like him, though. But he's not close enough to my favorite to get many saves from me. Probably 4th or 5th best in his own game, and even Yuffie and Seph have trouble getting saves from me every time.

In Record Keeper I intentionally left my Terra at level 1, even going so far as to 4 man challenge events that required you to bring Terra and having Terra use Petrify on herself to prevent her from gaining EXP yet still accomplishing the objective to bring Terra.

That's about the only time it's ever happened, and it was practically just for a challenge as much as anything else. Even in FFVI I never kill her off-- I just remove her from my party whenever possible.

Event sucked aside from the two boss fights at the end tbqh

I'm hoping at some point the paradigm evolves past this grindfest event stuff but I feel like it never will

Actually I guess the "story" for what it was was okay too. The silliness worked well enough. But yeah those two things combined were like 15% of the event

Also I wasted like 70 draws to get garbage. Never helps!

Pretty cool. Beat the gauntlet battle only losing Guest Gilgamesh (died to Tamamo attrition) and Kojirou (died to a Rule Breaker)

Did it with

L80 Jeanne (MVP, really. So many NPs to tank and so much healing)
L85 Kojirou (some clutch bursts and giving Gilgamesh stars)
L85 Gilgamesh (general damage source)
L70 Altera (cleanup)
L70 Medusa (got like one attack in)
L61 Kiyohime (didn't actually reach the field)

The main trick with Medea is to do some good damage to her if at all possible before killing her backup so she wastes some of her multiple actions on Argon Coin due to being lower on hp. She's really the only tricky one if you bring a strong Archer who can kill off Balmung man quickly (or have a strong single target NP to use on him)

it doesn't happen anymore, but it *did* happen. the first half of the article is more proof that discrimination among different types of white people no longer happens, and that being 'ethnic' is a bonus if you're white. second link mentions that it never worked if you weren't at least white-passing.

Yes, I know.

I'm saying the fact that I get these types of discussions from people, which are functionally identical to the stuff that Drak or Brohan is talking about, despite that kinda thing no longer happening anymore and also being white, is a sign that race or any sort of inherent issue existing in society doesn't really have anything to do with it.

Keep in mind I'm not citing this as evidence to say racism in America doesn't exist, just that these types of discussions irritating you for whatever reason is a completely independent thing from that.

Well if you don't have level 3s ascended, you should have others ascended in their place.

Point is the power gap between level 70 3s and level 70 or even 80 4s or 80 or 90 5s isn't as high as you'd think. Team composition, ordering, and strategy will matter more.

Keep in mind that first article you linked basically argues against your point by saying that immigrant name changes for the sake of changing them has "all but disappeared as something that's done" and lists out the varying reasons for the few name changes among immigrants that are still done, and says that in the overwhelming majority aren't related to any sort of discrimination (perceived or otherwise) but yeah.

I'm sure at one point in time it was definitely more commonplace as a concern. Seeing as I'm not posting from a time machine in the 1900s, though, it's not entirely relevant to the discussion. In a different time I could empathize-- but this isn't that time. And yet those conversation openers still occur, despite it not being that time, which implies these ice breakers aren't inherently tied to any sort of name based discrimination.

Does suck about guys like that drunken bigot, though, don't get me wrong. There's still work to do. I'm just saying being asked your race or whatever as a conversation opener is pretty irrelevant to any of that, and would occur in some racially harmonic utopia all the same.

That being said, I don't want to veer too far off on the point-- the point is that random icebreaker questions are just first impressions and aren't really something to take seriously in general.

Whether your skin color being related to one of those icebreakers should be taken as "underlying racism is inherent in society and this should be stopped" or "people tend to talk about distinctive features of you as a person as an icebreaker, and when you're a minority that happens to be one of those distinctive features, no big" is up to you. The fact that you can get similarly cliched icebreakers routinely, based on your career choices, style of dress or hair, or name, should be a hint to which is the more likely case, I feel.

tons of poles and russians who changed their name to avoid this type of question?

Citation needed.

Also I don't see how it being a choice matters all that much. I think my hair looks better long than short, and I happen to be good at those things-- these reactions from random people weren't presented to me upon making these choices and didn't weigh into my decisions. Just because I can in theory alter these things doesn't mean it should be considered reasonable for me to be expected to change my profession, skills, or hair style to avoid certain questions. In fact with skin lightening treatments and various forms of plastic surgery becoming more and more advanced, it's possible there actually might be less burden upon you to alter your appearance than to change your entire career path at some point. Depending on the career it might already be the case.

That doesn't mean it at any point becomes anything resembling reasonable to expect someone to do that, but I'm just illustrating why "you chose your profession and aptitudes" is a kinda silly counterargument. Whether you choose the reactions is what matters, not whether you choose what's reacted to.

you're catching flak because you're trivializing other people's experiences/calling them overreacting, simply because you want white people to feel more comfortable

I'm not saying you should lighten up to make white people more comfortable

I'm saying you should lighten up for your own sake. If you feel victimized by stuff like this, which will happen with anyone who has any sort of distinctive different feature regardless of race, just getting by in society must be a constant struggle.

Basically, you can make anything about race or nationality if you really want to-- just as you can take any other question or comment defensively in any sort of way. If I were a different person, I might be upset at constantly being guessed as polish, or getting occasional questions about whether I do marijuana (because I have long hair?) or people assuming I'm some tech geek because I'm a software engineer or know how to fix their computer, or whatever else. But I just don't care-- how many social faux pas or assumptions the person you're talking to shouldn't matter as much as their tone, reactions, eye contact, etc. Those are the kind of things that should make you feel awkward or irritated. In icebreaker conversation the words just don't really matter all that much.

Like I phrased it in a snarky way before, but I really don't see how my situation of constantly being asked if I'm Polish (my last name is weird and people I interact with often know my last name) as one of the first things randoms talk to me about is all that different than these so called "racially charged" moments. Hell I've literally had the situation Drak described occur to me-- "where are you from?" "Santa Fe" "no I meant your name, are you Polish?" "Oh. I'm Russian, actually"

I've never cared even remotely. I think it's cool. I usually make some joke about how I'm a Russian Spy or something.

I'm unsure why people would think racists would be striking up a conversation with them and why "it's just a dumb conversation starter don't overthink it" isn't the more common reaction.

Keep in mind that America is a country built on celebrating its diversity. I think the people who you should be defensive towards in this regard probably aren't the ones trying to strike up a conversation with you.

Valter's got a pretty high base speed so I haven't really given him anything as his default kit is pretty okay. Got Draw Back on B and Reposition on defense, but yeah, beyond that. His default Darting Blow lets him attack twice pretty often regardless. Think Brash Assault is somewhat wasted on a guy with 33 base speed.

And don't worry I have no plans for Khali to wrestle in matches. I just wanted him as Jinder's muscle for a bit and he was there for Summerslam (though I did have to hire him-- he wasn't on the roster) so yeah. As I said I'm going to have a very slight bit of lenience when it comes to non in-ring roles.

Smackdown Week 4 September 2017

Jinder Mahal is out to start the show, uncharacteristically alone, with Sunil and Samir Singh still injured from their beating from Nakamura last week. Nonetheless, he says that he is starting the Maharaja Open Challenge, tonight-- the one to answer will receive a title shot! Randy Orton answers the call! He heads to the ring and asks for the ref... Mahal acts very big and tough, and isn't scared... he gets right in Orton's face as from the entryway we see a gigantic figure heading towards the ring. It's The Great Khali! He steps over the ropes-- while distracted by Mahal, Orton hears the massive body step over the top rope. Orton turns to face him, but is hit with the KHALI CHOP~. Mahal laughs it up, and stomps Orton a bit, claiming victory before the match begins. (79)

Baron Corbin d. Tye Dillinger for a shot at AJ's US Title as Corbin beats him by count out after a nasty spill, then mocks him by shouting "10" like a douche. (56)

Breezango are back stage... muttering something about 2B... then they come across Aiden English. They shout they still have unfinished 2Business with him, and challenge him to a tag match, next! Aiden English doesn't quite know what to do, but quickly recruits Mike Kanellis (44) Breezango (w/ The Ascension) d. Aiden English & Mike Kanellis after Aiden English leaves shortly after the match starts, saying it was not 2B. (46) Breezango celebrate their victory very briefly... then realize Aiden English is still on the loose and wonder what exactly went wrong there... (48)

Shane McMahon is leaving due to some sort of emergency with Vince at the hospital, but before he leaves he books a match between Kevin Owens and Shinsuke Nakamura TONIGHT. Sami Zayn comes in to warn him to stop antagonizing Owens, but Shane blows him off (70) Another vignette of Rusev in Bulgaria. He asks a random person if they love Rusev or Randy Orton more. The person says Randy Orton-- Rusev hits him with an RKO OUT OF NOWHERE! (85)

AJ Styles holds his open challenge, which miraculously Baron does not interrupt... it is answered by GLORIOUS. A very competitive match has AJ Styles barely ekeing out a win. AJ d. Bobby Roode to retain. (70)

GONG. Undertaker's music hits... a hooded figure slowly approaches the ring... but... it's eventually (though perhaps not as immediately as he hasn't done this yet in this) clear that it is not Undertaker, but Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler rips into the Undertaker for never being here, rips into the crowd for digging fossilized has been gimmicks like him. He says he's the best, but he's not going to be playing into the crowd's love of stupid gimmicks anymore. He's not going to steal the show or entertain... he's just going to WIN. However, he's interrupted by... Sami Zayn! Zayn chastises Ziggler for berating Taker and the fans, and says maybe Ziggler hasn't been overlooked-- maybe he just isn't good enough. Ziggler leaves without a retort. (81)

Usos and The New Day agree to one final Hell In A Cell match to resolve their feud, at Hell in the Cell (68)

Becky Lynch approaches Charlotte backstage, saying last week's 10 way didn't settle anything, and challenging her to a 1v1 (48) Charlotte d. Becky Lynch (59) Renee Young interviews Natalya & Carmella who make fun of Charlotte & Becky for looking so lame out there (39)

Kevin Owens vs Shinsuke Nakamura. Randy Orton is out there for commentary. Shinsuke proves to be a wise choice for Shane to punish Owens through, as he kicks and knees the crap out of him. Eventually Orton says he's bored of watching this, and starts to head to the back... as he's leaving he "drops" his drink which goes rolling into the ring-- he grabs for it, which hooks Nakamura's leg, then Owens capitalizes on this brief distraction with a pop-up powerbomb for the win (69) Nakamura yells at Orton for getting in the way. Orton shrugs, says he wasn't even watching the match. Nakamura gets more pissed. Orton glares through him as the show cuts out (82)

You know

I think I figured out a big part of why I can't really get into the rhythm of this

The pre-built angle outlines suck so I'm either using freestyle angles for a bunch of stuff, or slowly building up a collection of angles that I like
The pre-loaded gimmicks suck.
Too many hardwired chemistries. Half my roster has "good" chemistry with each other in some way and it wasn't randomized that way.

I really kinda hate this mod in a lot of ways. Hopefully some imports from The Golden Age tomorrow will fix this. Should be able to slog out Smackdown tonight though. (can't import anything in the show booking screen and that's where I am right now)

Yeah I generally just play Cherche whenever she's needed. Her and Valter aren't really flyer team exclusive, though that's my optimal flying team when I use one. (I guess that I tend to split her off so much is more support for keeping Minerva though, for Arena Assault concerns in particular)

Cherche's enemy phase isn't as awful as you'd think though. Her Def + HP are high enough that she can tank a lot of physical stuff even though she's getting doubled by everything. I actually use her to draw lances, axes, and less meaty swords pretty often-- again, not ideal for it, but passable in a lot of situations, in a pinch.

Just keep her far away from mages on the player phase as usually even blues will one round her.

I think fully optimized Cherche is probably better than Minerva honestly. She's been such a powerhouse for me like all the time. Only real weakness is beefy sword types. Mages I can't really call a loss as much as a draw because it's basically sudden death as she can usually one shot even red mages with her stupid high attack + Brave Axe.

That being said nothing wrong with Axevalter (aside from a total lack of attachment to the character it's linked to) and unlike Cherche she doesn't take a ton of investment to make work as her starting kit is really good.
