3. Honeylune Ridge: Escape

I didn't realize Mario Odyssey was a stealth Sonic Adventure game until it was too late. It's like how PT was secretly Silent Hill the whole time.

The entire sequence of events after the final boss was probably my favorite gaming moment of all of 2017. It was already incredible up until this point, then the guitar riff hits and I'm just sitting there with the biggest, dumbest smile on my face. When the vocals started, I just wanted to scream I was fangirling so hard. When the SM64 Bowser jingle dropped, I may have overloaded for a bit.

There is no song, possibly in the world, that makes me happier to just think about than this one. With Nintendo being such a stuck-in-the-mud, refuses-to-try-anything-new company, how did this song even come to exist? I actually can't believe both Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey became what they were. Judging from their track record, how did this even happen?

I haven't even gone over the lyrics of the song yet. They're so cheesy, they hurt, but in all the right ways. They're either fourth-walling game mechanics or talking about shining love and walled gardens and reaching for the goal and shaking off chains and running free. "Follow the brick path straight to my heart, and we'll grab the flag together; the fireworks are gonna start." QUIT WITH THE FEELS NINTENDO I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE



Had to do an extended version this time, because the only shorter version I could find was the ending cinematic version with the weird interlude when flowers are being shoved into Peach's face.

Groh fights with a long dual blade that can separate into two smaller ones. He moves fairly quickly, and appears to have a powered up state in which his hair changes color and he removes his eye patch.

So he's like a cross between Raiden and Trunks.

After doing a full listen-through of all the songs left, painstakingly, I have decided that I must follow my heart and say....

4. Steam Gardens

When I first entered Iron Road, and the music started playing a huge range of emotions swelled up within me. The first 7 seconds reminded me a whole lot of Fossil Falls, which I had just come from. Then the bass comes in and I think this is really funky and I can't believe a Mario song was headed this direction. Then the real melody starts 21 seconds in, and I can't fucking believe how instantly the song had hooked me.

"Why did they have to waste the best song in the whole game a whole 3 kingdoms in?!" I asked myself six or seven kingdoms later. Little did I know that there was somehow a few songs even better to come....

I really enjoyed the second half of the game. It kinda is like Eternal Darkness in that all this shit happens and then none of the rest of the game even acknowledges that anything out of the ordinary is happening. It's just a roller coaster of emotion.

I got up to 89 orbs, which was a record for me, and when I amass a bunch of orbs, I get really stupid, so of course I pulled on the new banner again. Got Micaiah, though, so I'm content.

As for waiting, I will almost assuredly not so I can get a banner unit. Also I am weak.

5. Robobrood Battle

The base song is already an incredible boss theme by itself. You just can't help but move your head in rhythm. But when paired with the alternate version that plays when you knock him over and the flute and the chanting starts, it's absolutely top-tier.

6. Fossil Falls

What a beautiful song. This has to be the quintessential exploration tune of the game. To be honest, if my in-game music player got stuck on one song for the entire game, for some reason, I would want it to be this one. 1:27 to 1:56 in the video is just sublime.

The major thing that brings it down a bit for me is the one guy who suddenly wants to play Flight of the Bumblebee in the middle of the song at 0:42. I get that it's supposed to be fleeting and whimsical, but I wanna hear the gorgeous melody better, dammit!

7. New Donk City: Daytime

Honestly, I don't actually have much to say about this one. It's just a super catchy, toe-tappin', jazzy song that I could listen to for hours. It's exactly what you'd want to hear if you grew up in a weird world full of mushroom people and circular trees, and then you spent a day wandering around the streets in bewilderment at the scope of the skyscrapers around you in a jovial, bustling city.

8. New Donk City Festival

When they first debuted this song in the trailer and it had lyrics, I was unsure of how to feel. "This isn't the Mario soundtrack I'm ready for!"

Turns out that not only is it a great (and super cheesy) song, but the level it's used for is the best Moon in the entire game. Pauline can be my 1-up girl any time.

You can actually get the "right" answer in Pop Off. I was thinking of bringing it up earlier, but I hate when people ruin things for others. However, I know of three different people who all got stuck here, one of them being myself, and at least in my experience, when I was told what that answer was, I was legitimately upset that I was expected to try that. The battle itself may suck, but I'm kinda in love with this song. Really goes to show how much difference the mood can make in a song. The regular Broodal theme's still good, but this is on an entirely new level.

10. Mollusque-Lanceur Battle

One of the best boss themes to go with one of the best bosses (or so I would expect from Shonen). This is such a chaotic song, but I love every piece of it. The farting trombone (I think it's a trombone?) is my favorite. This seems more like a Mario & Luigi boss theme than a Super Mario one.

11. Bowser's Castle 2

I have seriously never heard anything quite like this. It's like a traditional Japanese..... jazz song? But it's great, and really plays up from Bowser's Castle 1 to make it feel like things are escalating even further, and the stakes are higher than ever before.

It isn't until the umpteenth time you hear it that you realize it's actually a remake of the Super Mario Bros. 3 Bowser Theme. Wait, you didn't notice?

12. Bubblaine

I swear, the first bit of the song is ripped right out of Hotel Dusk. And that's one of the biggest compliments I can give a video game track. And then afterward comes the best elevator music you'll ever hear.

This begins the list of 12 songs I decided to put on my phone. When I first did so, I made an individual Mario Odyssey playlist to listen to at work the next few days. I then realized I need to not have this song on it anymore, because whenever it played, I would catch myself starting to doze off.

13. Tostarena: Jaxi

Most of the time when you hear this tune, you might hear about 10-15 seconds of it before you hop off (or die). The part beginning at 9 seconds is OK on its own, but the portion from 0:35-0:52 is sublime. Not a very long song, but I put it on a lot when doing Free Runs, and it's a much more fitting song for them than Race is.

14. Bowser Battle 2

I'm not a fan of the first 50 seconds of build-up in this song, but my god, the rest is fabulous. When the guitar section kicks in at 1:16, it really starts to pull the right strings. The brief organ section that starts at 1:28 is great too and then the climax from 1:34-1:42 gives me chills every single time it plays.

If you had told me before I had first heard this that it was a Grant Kirkhope composition, I'd say "Yeah, that makes sense." This is the type of song I'd expect to hear walking through Grunty's Lair, but it fits the Cap Kingdom just as well.

This was one of the songs I didn't expect to include in my list, however many songs it ended up being, but after going back through every track, I kinda fell in love with. It's just so relaxing. Actually, it sounds a bit like something you'd hear in Animal Crossing, which is not a bad quality to have at all.

19. Peach's Castle

The Mushroom Kingdom is already perfect nostalgia on its own, but when coupled with a fully orchestrated remake of the castle theme, it legit gave me chills. When I saw the first painting, I squealed like a little kid and made the BABABA BA BA BAH noises as I jumped in, only for them to actually happen. There were few moments in gaming this year that made me feel quite as giddy as Mushroom Kingdom in general, and a lot of that had to do with the existence of this song. This is easily the song most affected by the atmosphere it helps set on this list.

I was just playing my 8-drop Rogue vs a Raza Priest in Wild. At one point, he played a Doomsayer to try and deal with two 3/3 Kobold Illusionists and a 1/1 Silver Vanguard. Now, I could've killed it, but I had a Cube and Faceless Manipulator in hand, so I tried something out. I attacked with the 1/1 and Cubed it to see what I got. It was Primordial Drake. That is one of a few left that I wanted to get rid of. I attacked with everything face, copied the Cube, then passed turn. I now have four 3/3 Vanguards, a 1/1 Vanguard from my hand, and a 1/1 Sylvanas.

He Spirit Lashes, and out of the Vanguard pops my Lich King. Again, still something I was perfectly fine losing. He surely thought "OK sweet, he's just wasting all his 8-drops. He surely can't have many more." He then Lightbombs.

What he didn't know was that Kel'Thuzad and Ragnaros were the two I had left. I was appreciative that he passed the turn to me so I could promptly end the game.

So at this point, you're gonna figure out what to do shortly, so I'll go ahead and type this up to let you in on a big part of the game you missed.

When Sayori hangs herself, there's a weird error in the background about an exception occurring and to check traceback.txt for details. Don't feel too bad about ignoring it; I did too, and anyone that streams this game gets GO CHECK THE GAME FILES yelled at them repeatedly so they don't miss it as well and it's super fucking annoying.

Anyway, there is a picture called hxppythxughts.png or something like that and it's a kid's drawing of a hanging Sayori. traceback.txt has a line where Monika muses about deleting Sayori because "she's the one making things so difficult". There are a few more that pop up later where Monika is trying to get your attention so you'll spend time with her instead. When Yuri pushes Monika and Natsuki out of the room, a file called haveaniceweekend.something or other appears to signify that yes, you will be there all weekend.

Again, it's kinda whatever because it really spells everything out, but it's kind of a neat meta thing going on in the background as you delve further and further into insanity.
