This might be my first Monster Hunter game (technically I own one of the 3DS ones, but I never played it). I figured I'd get it since all my friends are hyping it up and are expecting me to play with them.

Anything I should know going in? I don't even know really what type of game it is. Is it more of an MMO? Or an RPG with online play?

It's somewhat of a cross between an MMORPG and a single-player action RPG. There's a big (and I mean big) emphasis on gathering and farming materials to create better armor/weapons, which is what entirely defines your stats. While this can get tedious sometimes, the Hunts which make up the core gameplay are generally fantastic and makes farming feel much less repetitive. The combat is very similar to the Souls series, where each individual movement counts and getting hit hurts a lot. Less difficult than that series but yeah. Later on once you've done most of the single player content you starts doing group Hunts online with friends, and personally that's where the best part of the game is. Coordinating with your buddies to take down big threats is awesome.

theres a beta this weekend you should hop on to get a feel for things. might want to read up/watch guide vids for the weapons so you have an idea of what you want to play/how to play it (long sword/dual swords are the recommended beginner weapons but do whatever). if you feel totally lost theres a bunch of beginner guides and help vids and such you can check out
