You play a member of this in Comrades, and of course theyre the focus of the Kingsglaive movie. Crownsguard seems to be the personal guards of the royal family. Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto are Nocts. Kings Shield I assume is the leader of the Crownsguard, or at least a special position within it. (These books also introduced creatures that created a bubble in which the Force couldnt be felt or used, explained as an evolutionary defense against other creatures on their home planet that used the Force to hunt.) So you wouldnt actually expect the deep SW fanbase to care about lightsabers not cutting through everything.
