In many cases, cancer is self-inflicted too. So are heart attacks. So's diabetes. So are many infections. The cause and effect aren't as immediately linked as is the case with addiction, but if we're going to refuse to treat diseases based on how self-inflicted they are, a whole lot of medicine is just going to stop happening.

So... about the same as prior 3D Mario games? Mario games have never been particularly long. I beat Sunshine in two days, and I was 13 at the time. I still had a delightful time, and there were many more hours going after trickier Shines, but merely beating the game was pretty quick and easy. SM64 can similarly be beaten with 120 stars in a few hours if you know what you're doing (let alone the 70 that's the actual minimum), even without seriously trying to speedrun it.

That said, it's still fun to replay SM64, and I'm thinking I should replay Sunshine as well some time soon. That's what replay value actually means: Being fun to play it again after you finish with it. Mario games have always been pretty good for that. I see no reason to expect anything different from Odyssey. I do think it's weird that you claim to place a lot of importance on replay value, but are fixated on how long it'll take to beat the game once with minimal completion, as though you intend to spend as little time as possible playing it and don't plan on ever replaying it.

People certainly did call Galaxy the best, but that was far from being a unanimous opinion, and the dissent from that opinion you're seeing now is nothing even remotely new.

Most flu shots don't use thimerosal anymore, so none. For those that do, the mercury in thimerosal is in an ionic form that's far, far safer than the elemental mercury people are concerned about in fish (to illustrate the difference, elemental sodium bursts into flame on contact with water, ionic sodium is part of table salt and is essential for nervous system function).

Basically, Galaxy wasn't supposed to be like 64 or Sunshine. It was a different kind of game

This is what some people don't seem to get. It's fine if you prefer open exploration games, but a 3D game having linear level design doesn't automatically make it suck.

I think part of the problem was that it wasn't presented as being clearly a different game. Galaxy 1 in particular still had a hub world, so one could be forgiven for expecting another game like 64/Sunshine, but it was a very limited hub world that would have disappointed that expectation. Looking at it after finishing it, I can see the evolution of the series and the genre shift that started with Galaxy and reached completion with 3DW, but there wasn't really any reason prior to release to expect anything other than a sequel to Sunshine (despite widespread complaints that Sunshine had very little real platforming outside of the FLUDD-less sections, which a more platforming-centric game would have addressed), so I can understand the disappointment.

A hub world full of secrets does wonders for increasing the quality of a game. Galaxy shit the bed on that.

It does wonders for increasing the amount of exploration there is to do, but it's far from being necessary to have a good game. Galaxy didn't try to do that. It was a shift from an exploration-heavy collectathon to a purer 3D platforming game, meaning the whole game didn't have as much exploration (a trend which Galaxy 2 further built upon, and then 3DL/W completed the transition). An exploration-heavy hub world (or even a hub world at all) isn't really necessary in that new paradigm, so it was dropped.

Basically, Galaxy wasn't supposed to be like 64 or Sunshine. It was a different kind of game, and it was a shining example of that kind of game, with platforming level designs that were just a joy to play through in lieu of having exploration get in the way of platforming. Galaxy 2 offered even better level designs, while cutting down the exploration even further, and it was similarly a joy to play.

I'm not entirely sure. I don't think it's all nostalgia (though that's a big element of it), particularly where Sunshine should be nearly as nostalgic (15 years is old enough to warrant nostalgia). I do know that I replayed it and Banjo Kazooie fairly close together a few years ago, and I found that, while BK was objectively the better example of the genre, I walked away from SM64 feeling better about the game than I did with BK. Something about it is just plain fun, in a very subtle, charming way.

Granted, I think part of that is just that SM64 has better credits music than BK, and I often find that has a major impact on my lasting impression of the game (particularly if I don't play much past the credits, since it ends up being one of my last experiences with the game before walking away from it).

There really isn't much room to improve on Tooie. Making a better game than it would be hard. 3D collectathon platformers have generally fallen out of vogue since gen 5/early gen 6, though, particularly with Rare collapsing. Their place has kind of been taken by open-world games, which share a lot of common elements (namely the emphasis on exploration to find arbitrary stuff), but that's still not the same.

There are very, very few games whose main stories can't be beaten within a few days of playing. A few days is a lot of play time; a game lasting longer than that is almost always a consequence of padding that main story somehow, and I'd much rather see a game be fleshed out with interesting side content than pad the main story like that just so they can say it's longer.

So if vegetarians eat dairy, why mass produce a terrible version of cheese?

What makes you think vegetarian cheese is terrible? Again, cheese being vegetarian just means the chymosin used to curdle the milk proteins is derived from a source other than animal stomachs, which in most cases (80-90% of cheesemaking, vegetarian or otherwise, if Wikipedia is to be believed) means it comes from yeast that's been genetically engineered to express the protein (similar to how most insulin is produced these days).

There is vegan cheese out there that doesn't contain any milk, and is instead some sort of tofu cream kind of thing, but that's another beast entirely, and is mostly just masquerading as cheese (can't say I've ever understood the fascination with pretending that vegan dishes are in any way emulations of the real thing, as opposed to just calling them their own thing, but meh).

That's true for an individual serving, which is why people turning down meat that they're served is questionable (it either goes into your stomach or into the garbage, and the producers won't know the difference), but on a larger scale, providing less demand for meat means less meat will be produced. It's not a completely futile gesture.

Cheese is made using an enzyme that is most easily harvested from calf stomachs, which involves killing the calf to get it. Vegetarian cheese gets that enzyme from other sources, which means the cheese is made without needing to kill an animal.

Edit: Doing some more research (read: wikipedia), it looks like most of the enzyme used in cheesemaking these days comes from genetically modified yeast, because it's far easier and cheaper to get it that way than using calf stomachs. This means most cheeses are vegetarian now.
