Pressing a low amount of buttons can create a large amount of garbage on the screen and the timing windows are generally pretty generous-- that game is about screen awareness and keeping your composure more than anything. People drop so many combos because it's that damn chaotic Many fighters have seemed more difficult than Melee to me though, on an execution level. I mean I haven't been top level at any of them, Melee included, but I do know them well enough to not be totally out of my depth here on what the game requires-- I mean I can do crap like wavedashing, know some combos and theory. I just don't really like Melee in general. But like, compared to SFIV I drop a lot more stuff in SFIV despite having more time put into it. Just because you need to press buttons less rapidly, much like with League, doesn't mean there aren't mechanics there. The big thing that Melee seems a lot more forgiving on than something like, SFIV, is processing the proper delays between your attacks. It looks more impressive because you're literally breaking your hand, but I don't think there are nearly as many frame precise things in Smash vs something like SFIV, or even, most fighters, really, which imo makes them actually more difficult despite being easier on your hands. --- No problem! Like yeah there's execution there but the reason to make an argument League is more complicated and difficult to master than a fighter (which I think is a fair argument to make, though I'm not sure I agree with it) has nothing to do with mechanics. It has to do with gameflow and map awareness more than anything which dwarfs the equivalent in a fighting game. You may think it does-- that's because you haven't put nearly the effort into Blazblue or Marvel that you have into League. League might have like, a small handful of characters that you could make an argument for being as skill intensive as a bog standard fighting game character but on the whole they're really really not. --- No problem! Like I'm sure there are a ton of people at varying levels of diamond levels that are actually really platinum players on skill level. I'm probably a gold player on skill level (well, nowadays after having been absent from the game for like 3 years that's probably generous but let's say peak Lopen) but if I grind enough I can reach platinum if I want since I've played with enough platinum players to know as much and have seen how much my ranking can vary based on how much I play in any given season. Not that you actually ever got diamond 1 and it's hot air to begin with but yeah --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |

| Lopen 01/20/18 1:53:15 PM #41 | Also if you're in training mode for 40 minutes regularly getting one frame links or whatever and can't consider yourself a bit better than "decent" at your local fighting game scene I'm wondering if there's something that's fundamentally not clicking with you or if you have the uber god mode local fighting game scene to end all local fighting game scenes. There's so much in fighting games that isn't about timing windows and such. I mean in SF4 when I did a bit of training for EVO I got pretty good with Juri just learning a couple of simple combos-- nothing super tough. You generally only need the hardcore combos when you're at the absolute top level and you need to extract every last bit of damage out of every bit offense you've got. But I mean, keeping a cool head under pressure, spacing, what to do when the other guy is down-- you don't learn that stuff in training mode and that's way more important than one frame links or whatever. --- No problem! Full disclosure I've probably haven't gone into training mode for more than a few hours total combined in my entire life and while I'm not pro level, guess what, "diamond 1" isn't either. I'm no fighting game master or anything but I have gone to EVO to be fodder for fun and wasn't completely blown out, and got a decent rating in Marvel 3 online when I actually played it. Like the level of mastery you're comparing is more like high challenger level dedication-- forget diamond 1. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |

Just clown mashing with your friends might not be satisfying to you because none of you have any idea of what you're doing, not because of win rate. I mean I could name dozens of things I liked more once I learned how to play them a bit better. And because of stuff like matchmaking, my friends also being bad at them, and frankly not really being a sore loser to begin with, I can't really say it's because my win rate went up. Hell Virtua Fighter is a great example of a series that I thought was incredibly boring until I actually learned it a bit-- I'm still not very good at Virtua Fighter but I do actually enjoy it now. Marvel vs Capcom games get a lot more interesting when you actually start to understand how assists work and when to call them, and can reliably do some basic combos, etc etc. Not just fighters though. Chess is probably the best example of a game I appreciated more as I got better at it. Or for an example of a game I know you actually play, League of Legends. You're telling me you never started to appreciate that game more once you got more of a clue what you were doing? --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
