TopicAre video game lives a dead concept?
Paratroopa1

Lives are great and more games should utilize them.

Games where you can retry a single part of the game over and over ad infinitum until you fluke into getting it right once, and then never have to revisit it again, don't really have the same kind of challenge as games that force you to prove that you can complete a challenge *consistently.* That's really the whole point of making you do things over and over again.

I understand that that type of gameplay isn't for everyone, and not all games needs to have this kind of system. A lot of games don't need them - Super Mario 64, for instance, is a game where lives are a completely vestigial concept that only exist because they didn't realize they could get rid of them, and it's still challenging enough since you have to complete enough challenges on the way to getting a star that the "proof" that you can do something is still substantial enough.

Some games are more about exploration or puzzle solving or story or whatever and don't really need lives either. But a lot of action games could really stand to ask more of their players sometimes - I love games with lives and even old-school continue systems where you have to start the entire game over. It'd be nice to have more of them.

One of the biggest question marks to me will be how much credit the SEC is given in the CFP rankings. Honestly, the SEC is on a down year, and I think people are a bit slow to realize it because it has (rightfully) earned so much respect over so many successful seasons. I do think Georgia is legit, and I think they should receive serious consideration if Alabama is their only loss. But the SEC is kind of shit.

In most RPGs, ESPECIALLY JRPGs, the benefits from weapons vastly outstrip the benefits from armor. I have no idea why this is, but it just is - the defense stat tends to be given much less weight than the attack stat, and then on top of that, most of the actually dangerous attacks will be magic or something else that's not subject to defense, so it's better to pick up the weapons, which pretty much always scale up helpfully, making it so that you can kill mobs quick and make boss fights shorter so that you need to spend fewer healing items powering through them.

In a game like Darkest Dungeon though, I go armor first, then weapon.

I was thinking about this recently, actually, and what's amazing about SM64 is that, despite being one of the very first 3D platformers ever (I think there might have been something that qualifies before SM64 but I don't remember what), it nailed so many elements of its design perfectly - namely, the movement, and how fun it is to run and jump in its environments. What's really disappointing to me, and really kind of a shame for the 3D platforming genre, is that I don't think any 3D platformer ever improved on this. SM64 still remains the most fun game to just move around in. That includes later Mario games too - Sunshine and Galaxy, while they're still fun, don't feel quite as kinetic, as acrobatic, as free as SM64 - you don't accelerate into your jumps quite as pleasingly, you always feel like you have too much air resistance and drag whenever you try to maneuver in the air, and there's never enough walls to do wall kicks off of. SM64 is really not a perfect game by any means - the level design shows a lot of flaws, plenty of the stars are not really that fun to collect at all and rely on some stupid gimmicks, the worlds in general don't quite live up to being as fun or inventive later in the game as they are early on (the first floor of the castle is magical but it kind of nosedives after that). But it really nailed the movement. I hope Odyssey can kind of get back to what SM64 did so well at least a little, but I think, for some reason, it might never be repeated.

So you get Stanford -36 AND Oregon State +6 - if either of these results occur, you advance

No you don't get to move it 15 points in your favor for either team, that would make it hilariously easy to pass

In my opinion, some of the answers - Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Die Hard most notably - although they are peak achievements of 80's movies, I think they transcend the time period in which they were made, and are too timeless to be "the most 80's movies"

11037 was so obvious that I actually did not understand that it was "supposed" to read as 11037 at first - I ONLY saw the upside-down "Leon." I immediately assumed when I saw it that it had to be a red herring planted by the real killer, and that Leon would be the suspect of the first case... but then nobody ever brought it up, and kept talking about 11037, and that made me really, really confused.

Wouldn't really worry about maximizing free time that badly, just use it as you see fit and you can see the rest later in an extra mode or just watch it on youtube. You can't really "maximize" it in a normal run of the game anyway, for reasons.
