I think it's good for fast food, and I'd rather get panda over mcdonalds or something, but it's not great compared to any of the local Chinese takeout places I go to.
Like, if I get food at the place down the road, I'm 100% convinced they put crack in their food because I'll eat all of it even if I'm full, it's just plate after plate after plate. but with panda? I'll eat half or something and be like "okay, that's enough of that"

We're never going back to a paradigm of having like four different magazines you can read and that being the main way you find out about games, simply because there are so many better ways to get a game out there than that and far, far too many "hidden gems" for a small number of media outlets to cover all of them.
That was just an example. We're in a time with AI, limitless information, and people constantly being connected with their smartphones. There's really no reason for indies to have a larger reach than they currently do, it's more a matter of people being lazy and opting for convenience.
Like, yeah, 90+ percent of people will only find out about games from facebook, twitch, etc. but there's no reason to just accept that those have a monopoly and give up.
But, then again, the only person I've seen make an effort like what I'm imagining is videogamedunkey with his big mode games, and I don't think anything has released through that yet.
And also I can't really have room to talk about people being lazy because I'm saying all of this and making no real effort on my part to do what I think devs, indie publishers, etc. should be doing. Like, I make games and I've never ever once made a youtube video or even actually released anything lmao, so I suppose all that I'm saying ultimately boils down to wishful thinking.

If indies "take over," they'll be just as bad as AAA. The evils of the AAA market are inherent to high-budget projects; the things we like about indie games are a function of them being smaller projects that people can take risks on without having investors to answer to.
nah I don't mean take over like a handful of indie studios replace AAA just to become the same thing, but for AAA to go away or get more obscure, and things like indies are given more consideration from word of mouth and stuff. Like, how there is a "before you buy" or "top 10 new games this year" thing, but it's always for a AAA game. yeah there are channels that do this for indies, and even some indies get in with the AAA games sometimes, but it's either extremely niche (like, top 10 indie roguelike deckbuilders) or the "big" indie games that probably have some prominence already from past games, or have some form of publisher/large enough marketing budget
basically what I'm saying is that, I hope that indie games go from niche with outliers finding mainstream success, to how I'd find out about games 10-20 years ago, where it was just some random person suggesting it or a magazine. So, in short, I'm hoping for AAA to be seen by more people as just a money grab doing very little to push the gaming industry forward, and for more people or groups dedicated to finding random good indies and giving them some form of publicity. Like a larger "DIY culture" surrounding indie games.

on one hand, I don't come to this site often and can go months without even thinking about it
on the other hand, the reason I appreciate this site is because it still feels like "old internet" from 2000-2013ish, which is in my opinion when the internet started taking over life and got weird. I don't like it. so, it's like a living time capsule which is cool, and not too many sites out there give that feeling.
sure, there are other forums that are way more expansive like reddit, but I never really feel like posting there. like, the best comparison I can make about reddit is my aunt. she's a really cordial person on the surface, but when she says things you can tell there's something "beneath it all" if that makes sense, that's the vibe I get from reddit, like the posters there try to curate or type their posts in such a way that it "fits" the reddit way of talking.

BucketCat

I feel like a lot of fads either evolve into something else, or kind of fade away. but scene kids kind of disappeared out of nowhere.

I'm not complaining, just wondering. It seemed like everyone and their mother had some semblance of "scene" fashion when I was in highschool, but BAM! out of nowhere it was gone for good. Every other fad had stragglers for a few years who were hanging on to the past, but it's obscene that scene got left in the dust.
And what's worse, is that it's all like some weird fever dream....like, were there really teenagers running around with big, leopard print hair? yes, there was. but whenever I ask someone at work or wherever who is around my age, "hey, remember scene kids? whatever happened to them?" they'll act dumbfounded as if I'm making up the fad that defined my generation.

and on that note, what happened to big obnoxious skate shoes and those stupid flat billed caps with sesame street characters on them? those were weirdly popular at my high school to the point that I thought it was an incredibly elaborate joke, but nobody remembers those either, even if I show someone a picture of them wearing that outfit 10-15ish years ago, they'll deny it and say its a photoshop or AI image.
am I crazy or am I getting mandala affected?

I use Belkin surge protectors and have never had issues. I have pretty frequent power outages during spring months since it storms a lot and have never had real issues other than the power being out, just make sure it has an adequate joule rating, like 4000+ or something. Just, if you have power surges or outages often, make sure to replace them every few years cus the protection won't last forever.
UPS might be overkill, I'd personally only find one useful to have time to save documents/projects/whatever in the event of an outage (that said, a UPS will generally provide better surge protection than something that is only a surge protector. generally, not always)
have you tried other outlets or tried other power cables, btw?

Topichow to get cats to get along?
BucketCat

so I have two cats, one cat I've had since he was a baby cat like 12-13ish weeks old and is 9 years old, and my other cat was a stray cat who kind of just moved into my yard a few years ago then moved full time into my house like two years ago...she's at least five years old cus the first time I ever saw her was 5 years ago.
they both like me and they'll like sit on my lap and other cute cats hanging out with you things, and sometimes they'll be cool with each other and do cat things like they'll clean each other, sleep next to each other, etc.
but, usually the new cat will hiss and attack my older cat. she'll randomly walk up to him and then hiss and swat at him. usually he doesn't do anything and just gives a look like "wtf??!? lol, anyway" then go back to what he's doing (he's way bigger than she is, she's teeny tiny and he's half mainecoon half bengal so he's pretty big (like he weighs around 20ish pounds and is lean)) but rarely he'll jump out at her then run away, but he does that to me too where he'll go up on the fridge then jump onto me.

so yeah, basically, how do i get my newer cat to like my other cat? how do i help her get over her ptsd of her life of being a stray cat and treat my cat like a big bro who'll show her the ropes of life at my house

TopicWhy has housing prices gone up so much?
BucketCat
10/12/23 2:17:57 PM
#57
The thing I don't get is that a lot of people cannot afford homes, even if they're making decent money for their area. Then also lumber prices are up, like I was going to rebuild my deck last year and decided to wait, and this year it was significantly more expensive....So I'd imagine the cost to build a home is way higher too. Then there's war everywhere, so not only is the lumber costly but the fuel is too. Meaning cost to buy a brand new home is probably way, way up compared to an already constructed home.

But, with all of that in mind, right now in my city there are 12 new neighborhoods being constructed. Not like a one-off home being built in a lot, but 20-30 home communities are being built. They're not even cutting down the woods or anything in my area (which I think they would to at least re-use that local lumber), but are instead just building them in vacant fields.
It makes absolutely no sense to me, but it seems like new neighborhoods are constantly popping up. There was one that finished being built 5 years ago and there are a grand total of two families living in that neighborhood that I've counted. I ride my bike through there all the time and it's some weird, creepy ghost town and they keep building more and more.
I don't like the look of the neighborhoods, either. They all look like that movie "Vivarium" if anyone is familiar with it...which doesn't fit aesthetically at all with my area, which is the stereotypical midwestern small-medium sized city.

I recommend against using Monogame tbh. I used it for a while, it's faster to use a game engine to do anything.

Unless you feel like doing something particularly custom. I remember being very jealous of Unity developers cranking out a full demo in a weekend like it was nothing.

Plus I've been waiting 6 years for them to implement WebGL.
yeah I'm mostly just interested in it because my AP computer science class back in highschool used XNA which eventually turned into monogame. It was fun at the time, but looking back compared to Unity it's really limited. I think that, overall, the limitations of monogame (and even Godot, because while good it's still not quite there in my opinion), will help people become better programmers and game designers.
I think I might just stick with Unity, and then learn Unreal on the side. It's silly but what I really want to do is make a portfolio so I can maybe someday get a job at a studio

the only things i don't buy bulk are things that go bad quickly, so like fruits/veggies, yogurt, and stuff like that. i'm also that person at the store who has dozens of coupons every time, because i was raised to be super frugal and always live way below my means, so bulk shopping + coupons seems like the way to go.

But seeing as the target audience is the teenage demographic, I probably cannot complain.
That's my problem with a lot of modern animated series, they lean too far into whatever the target demo is and kinda ignore everyone else. At least with the 90s cartoons they were geared towards kids, but had writing that adults could appreciate.
Maybe that's a thing with the times, because everything is so easily accessible it makes more sense to make t hings hyper-oriented towards kids, or adults, or whatever rather than taking the time to craft something that goes beyond generations.
