Putting initial rage aside, your statement means what DeSantis is saying is actually true. He did attain skills as a result of being a slave. He taught it to his children and his successors knew those skills when they were eventually freed.

Africans already had skills prior to enslavement, most notably in agriculture, metallurgy and medicine. It wasn't like slavery was a reason that they knew these skills, there were African blacksmiths for thousands of years dealing with iron, planting rice fields etc. They came with that knowledge and slavers knew it and brought them to specific locations based on that knowledge.

No, they won't -- because they'll be defeated.

Really? Will they really? We have a conservative Supreme Court that was handpicked by the Federalist Society, and a bunch more in the Federal circuit that was picked by Trump who will be making rulings for the next 40+ years.

Republicans know their demographics are shrinking but they are employing every method to suppress voting. In Alabama state Republicans have thumbed their noses after Fed Judiciary ordered them to redraw the maps that would make a second majority black district.

It won't be a quick reversal on everything, it's more of a slow boil, and we are the frogs. A lot of people thought Roe v Wade was safe, it wasn't. The Voting Rights Act is a carcass now, Affirmative Action is gone. Next in their crosshairs is Obergefell vs Hodges. They've played the long game for 50+ years, and it's like Revenge of the Sith time now. I wouldn't put anything past them, this is what we are dealing with.

I've said before it's high time that people realize that there is a sizeable portion of our population that is still angry about the gains we've made since the second Civil Rights legislation of the 1960s (2nd because the first was repealed by the Supreme Court, which opened the door for Jim Crow) and are hellbent on drawing back to pre-1955 America.

They are angry that minorities, women and LGBTQ have more of a voice in today's society compared to their childhood or their parent's era. Instead of sharing the table they'd rather burn it down.

This notion that slavery was just a trade program is an attempt to redress it from what it really was, 250 years of chattel slavery and the horrific sexual and physical abuse enslaved black people had to endure. They're depending on their target audience being ignorant, so they're banning books, whitewashed curriculum and saying everything that they don't agree with or doesn't paint the history of America under a jingoistic lense CRT

Enslaved Africans already had skills before they were taken captive including pottery making, weaving, wood carving, etc. Metal working, black smithing and bronze smithing was thriving in Africa for thousands of years before colonialism and the slave trade.

Slaves taken to the Carolinas were sent there specifically because of their knowledge of rice growing techniques, women brought rice and okra over in their hair and they were planted here. It's not like they were bringing in unskilled labor, that is factually incorrect.

And what DeRacist is also wrong about is the fact that enslaved Africans did not receive payment for their skills, they were slaves.

DeRacist is a POS, and is pandering to the other racists in his party where anti anything non-white, straight, cis, etc is basically the enemy.

Enslaved Africans came here with a number of skills already. Slaves were brought to the Carolinas in particular for their knowledge and techniques on growing rice. Those skills didn't do much good over those 250 years of chattel slavery and stolen labor and wealth though. These Republicans can fuck all the way off.

A few things.

1. Why cant we just say, racism is a problem? I think there are a lot of stupid people in this country who dont see through the tribalistic nature of this question, and look at it from a what about me perspective. The facts are that racism against all groups is a problem, but questions like these only seek to further divide those groups.
2. Reparations for slavery isnt just a race issue. Giving away billions of dollars to a racial minority to pay them back for something that their ancestors did, I mean thats a slippery slope. The challenge is, how do you prove that the people who are getting the money actually descended from slaves? There are alot of African Americans who came to the US later.
3. If you are going to go that route, then you also need to give reparations to native Americans as well, and there are plenty of other minorities who could argue their ancestors werent paid what they should have been either. Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Jewish, Irish, I mean a basic US history class and you learn about the sweatshops and the conditions building the railroad and all that. Before you know it, you have an argument that anyone who isnt a wasp is owed something for justices that took place before they were born. Example - my wifes grandparents received a lot of money from Germany over the course of their lives because of their experiences at Auschwitz. And while Germany can never pay the Jewish people back for what they did, I do not believe my wife and I should get money to pay us back for what they went through. (And while I know the comparison doesnt hold up completely because Jews never went back to Germany, and systemic racism is still a thing here, Im merely looking at this economically.)
4. The Tulsa massacre survivors are owed something. They actually experienced it. Just like George Floyds family is owed something for his murder.

It wouldn't be the first time this country has given out reparations. The local, state and Federal governments have fucked over enslaved Africans and their descendants for generations. The fuckery didn't just end at emancipation after 250 years of slavery, the Supreme Court left the newly freed black population to the wolves after the failure (sabotage) of Reconstruction and opened up another century of legalized racial terrorism.

My parents were among the first to integrate their middle school and had to fight through angry white mobs every day, and this was in the 70s. Their parent's tax dollars were paid to go into a segregated society where white residents reaped the benefits, but if they or my parents went to the white side of town they were harassed by the police. It was like that across the country, especially the South.

The amount of black wealth, land and property that has been stolen and/or stymied by these institutions that were supported by the government needs a serious calculation. Also, African-American refers to a specific lineage of descendants of American chattel slavery, not every black person in the US is African-American, we are our own ethnicity group. Continental Africans and other descendants of the diaspora have their own claims to in their countries of origin.

There are decent arguments in support of AA that arent this

The removal of AA isn't within a vacuum, it is part of a multi-pronged attack on DEI, underfunding HBCUs for decades to now calling for removal of minority scholarships.

There is a sizeable portion of this country that has said "I'm good" on this attempt at integration and the 2nd Civil Rights legislation (because the first one was repealed by the SC). A lot of them are still alive or were kids during the 60s and 70s. The thing is they won't just stop at AA, they'll go even further if there's nothing there to impede them. I dont get why people use level of aggression to defend owning pit bulls. That was never the argument. Sure pit bulls can be less aggressive. The problem is what happens when they actually are aggressive. They become hard to control and can do serious damage. That is the problem.

Its like the difference between a kid playing with a fake knife and a really knife. They are both easy to control but one can do far more damage if you lose control

Well if we're going to judge dogs by what they could potentially do then there are dozens of breeds that are larger and far more powerful than Pit Bulls, and most of them are traditional guardian breeds with human aggression bred in. It's just that people don't own those breeds as much as Pits so they're nowhere near as numerous. Any dog over a certain size has the capacity to do damage, everybody may as well have Pugs if we're worried about potential here. The first face transplant was the result of a Lab attack.

No one's ignoring those, and many of us have said all large breeds need some form of regulation.

What the "nanny dog" people ignore is frequency. For every one attack by a different breed, there's 10 for pits. What's also ignored is frequency of fatality. Yes, other breeds are capable of doing serious harm. But they don't as frequently. Not even close. Pitbulls (and the people who most frequently tend to own them) present a unique host of issues.

Well, for one, there are millions upon millions of bull breeds among us which includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully etc, and the legions of mixes and crosses running around. There is only one real "Pit Bull" and that is the APBT but these dogs (and those that look like them) get lumped into one group by laymen, it is like lumping the all retrievers into one when they are separate breeds with different breed standards and temperaments. Bull breeds are among the most popular kind of dog out there, especially in the cities. Dog bite statistics generally follow which breed is the most common, Pits are no exception to this as their popularity has grown since the 80s. Before Pits it was German Shepards, St. Bernards, Dobermans and Rottweilers that people were having this discussion about.

Dog bred for fighting and bloodsport.
Dog bred for specific aggression.

Dogmen typcially culled (killed) human aggressive dogs due to safety reasons when breaking up fights in the pit. Generally Pit Bulls are generally animal aggressive, not people aggressive. Some of the most game pit dogs are the most calm around humans. I'm far more comfortable around a Bull breed when entering a yard as opposed to a traditional guardian breed like a German Shepard or Doberman, etc.

Humans have always bred for specific traits in dogs. Most working or hunting dogs have a specific aggression that is required. Guardian breeds like Rottweilers, Cane Corsos etc have a level of human aggression which is needed to do their work. A guardian breed can't do their job if they're afraid of people and will turn tail when challenged. Terriers (which Pit Bulls are, in addition to bulldog ancestry) have a high level of animal aggression, they're used to hunt vermin, are used as catch dogs, dog fighting, etc. Does this mean that every Corso or Rott will go ham on every person they see? No. Does it mean that Pit Bulls will try to attack every dog or other animal they see? No.

Dog prone to randomly snapping without warning.
Dogs don't snap without warning, generally there are always warnings and precursors to bites or attacks. Just because the human doesn't recognize those warnings it doesn't mean they didn't occur.

Trash breeders.
No argument from me there. Many popular breeds are poorly bred and overbred, Pit Bulls are no exception.

Trash people want intimidating dogs.
No argument there. A lot of people get dogs and have no idea how to handle them. I was raised with Chows and Rottweilers, now I have Cane Corsos, they aren't for everybody, certainly not beginning dog owners.

Trash people don't train their dogs.
Trash people don't secure their dogs.
Again no argument, all dogs need training and socialization. People should always have their animals secure.

Ignorant bledding hearts think they can "rescue" dogs that were raised poorly and don't know what they're in for.
Humane societies not properly warning adopters of the dangers of large breeds in general, and pits in particular.
All this shit compounds into the perfect storm we have here. We need some common sense regulations for animals capable of killing people.

It is a lot of work to raise rescue dogs, generally with older dogs WYSIWYG and it's a task of managing behaviors.

Adoption agencies should screen applicants to determine whether they would be a good fit.

We need common sense regulations for dog ownership in general which includes
  1. License and provide permanent identification for your pets.
  2. Spay or neuter your pets upon sexual maturity (to avoid adverse health effects) if they aren't part of a responsible breeding program.
  3. Provide training, socialization, proper diet, and medical care for your pets.
  4. Do not allow your pets to become a threat or nuisance in the community, which means properly securing them.
  5. Procure your pet ethically and from a credible source, i.e shelters or breeders that have working or conformation titles, and have health and temperament testing done on their animals.

If the majority of pet owners did just these five things then it would solve most of our "dog issues"
