Super Mario 3D Land required all flagpoles for the final level. Pretty much all of them lock something behind all star coins

edit: 3D World also required all flagpoles. I would probably just expect this to be the standard moving forward

My one criticism of Celeste is the strawberry that requires you to know about a secret in Super Mario Bros. 3 to unlock. Nothing else in the game suggests how to do it. Obviously I knew it, but that felt like it was not in the spirit of everything else in the game.

Yeah that Gilligans Island game has some novel concepts but it doesnt all work great. Same can be said for most of Human Entertainments output. Theres definitely a line you can draw from the design of Gilligans Island to their later stuff line Clock Tower, S.O.S., and Twilight Syndrome

is it even a Myst-like? I haven't played it in like 20 years but I remember Myst being a point and click. The actual movement is a huge part of Outer Wilds

The cool thing with Outer Wilds is that you could very easily die just exploring before the 22 minutes are up many times in a row and not even discover that that happens for a while. Then youd think the twist is just that you always go back when you die, and get to experience a second mechanics twist later

whereas DDLC or many of those meta-twist games tip their hand a little too much. I got to DDLC early and it took me like half an hour to know almost exactly what was going to happen

He sounded decently sick during the podcast yesterday and said his son is more sick than him so might still be up in the air. But he said again that it wont be much longer before the baby is past the point of being in danger from these basic illnesses so it shouldnt be completely destroying his schedule whenever someone is sick

Funny enough, the developer of Yo Noid (Now Production) did the sequels to Adventure Island. They didnt do the port of the first one, though, I think that was just Hudson.

if you get to the point where you have to grind for blood vials, look up the code for the "cum chalice" chalice dungeon and just spend all the echoes you get on vials so you never have to worry about it anymore

There are some pretty serious allegations against the creator of that one so that probably dampened discussion of the game

Super Spike VBall shouldve just gone whole hog and been an over the top Kunio sports game. I think they actually did do one on game boy later on

Okay, so apparently this was in the original game, but I never noticed it before because of the lower-quality graphics. It's MUCH clearer in the remakes that Booster's Tower has a really cool reference to Final Fantasy VI!:

This one is tough because you have to essentially figure out the rule theyre teaching you (which is mandatory to understand for later puzzles) without it being really suggested at all.

Originally it was even harder but they patched in this easier one and made the original an Extra.

For customer survey reviews this is objectively false. Companies demand perfect scores across the board. A glowing 4-star review is literally viewed the same as a 0 while a no text 5-star review is perfect.

DiMartino and Konietzko departing due to creative differences is definitely a reason to be cautious but I think that happened during the rumored aged-up what if they fucked version if I remember the timeline right. So they might have corrected course since then.

Coming off of World of Goo, Little Inferno is one of my bigger disappointments in indie games, I can only think of one bigger off the top of my head which Im almost positive will be on the list later. Its just completely uninteresting to me.

It can definitely be tough to recover. But also the rank goes way down after a death to give you a chance

Shooting games are where it is most evident, but other genres like beat em ups also utilize it. Clearing a game on one credit or doing speedruns sometimes requires careful management of rank, even necessitating intentional deaths at times. For example TMNT speedruns intentionally die right before the fight against Bebop and Rocksteady at the same time because it lowers both of their health significantly, saving a lot of time there. Technically you can keep the rank a little bit lower in Gradius by not using all your powerups, but its not really worth it to do so.)

The sequel has a loadout with the Tail Gun which shoots backwards, and it remains a choice for the rest of the series. Personally I never use it though.

It's very bad. Don't believe anyone who says "The arcade version is better" either. Technically that's true because it looks and sounds a little better and has a better framerate but it is still a very very bad game

She probably will at some point, many VFX/SFX are temporary/incomplete. Even Odin just got new stuff in the last patch and hes series 1

Werewolf is one that makes more sense once you spend some time with it and also read the manual. It's certainly not amazing, but I probably wouldn't call it bad
