It's just that instead of hiring an amazing Lawyer that you like and you know understands your case, you're rolling the dice on whoever you get assigned, they might be good or decent or bad or awful. They might not give a shit, or they might be overworked and have so many cilents they do the bare minimum for you.

Leonard French is a copyright Lawyer and he got summoned as a public defender despite knowing jack about criminal law because the courts got him confused with another lawyer called French and no one bothered to check.

He took the case and did fine but you're crazy if you can't see why it's concerning.

You can hire the world's best lawyer and they would still be powerless for stuff that courts have no jurisdiction over or authority to change. Like having a gun illegally in my state is a mandatory 5 year prison sentence at minimum, an attorney that you hired for $20,000 would perform the same as a public defender. In my experience, Private Attorneys often just keep delaying the case, drawing out how much you're paying them, and studies done by the American Bar Association and others have shown that overall having a public defender can be better than hiring private attorney
and in this case he wouldn't be entitled to a public defender anyway, parole matters are for the parole board, the only time the courts would get involved is if theres a post conviction relief application. The lawsuit would be a civil matter, which was filed, and you don't get a public defender for civil matters.

I've seen a lot of public defenders who are more knowledgable about the law than private attorneys and even got peoples cases dismissed by quoting little known statutes and case laws. Don't insult them
