Charge is not fantastic; I probably wouldn't stick it on another job. In the context of Archer, however, it's fine. Your Archer is most likely just attacking on the majority of their turns anyway, you might as well cram a little extra damage in wherever you can. Also you're completely discounting R/S/M skills - Speed Save is fantastic, and Concentrate is situational but very nice to have available. As far as Black Magic goes, level 3 and 4 spells are actually fairly functional until mid-chapter 4 and can be extended past that if you're willing to invest in Short Charge.

Not only that, you can make both jobs quite powerful using nothing but abilities from their own skillsets! All a Black Mage needs is the level 2 spells and Magic Attack Up, maybe Flare if you're feeling spicy, and you have a walking nuke that is viable all the way to endgame (so long as they have halfway decent Faith). Meanwhile, Archers are quite happy with Concentrate and the lower level Charges. They're a bit dependent on equipment, but the game practically throws Ultimus Bows at you by the time you're at end of third chapter levels, and even if you don't get one the Gastrafitis is a very powerful option available from shops soon after that.

Really, the fact that a job is less powerful than Orlandu, or a min/maxed Ninja, or a freaking Calculator is not a sign that the job is nonfunctional - it's just not as good as the truly broken shit in the game, which is hardly an indictment. Not everything can be the best.

I love how the art style is so cute, yet the world itself is so dark and harrowing. Seeing these little 2D sprites be horrible to each other and maim one another in the name of God is true dark fantasy. I've always considered FFT to be the Game of Thrones of video games.

Both stories are riffing on the Wars of the Roses, so the comparison is pretty apt.

SE please port WotL to Steam already so I can tell all my friends to play FFT and not have to add the caveat "...on your phone!"

The combat and ability systems are my least favorite parts of FF9. Every battle just takes forever, what with the opening animation and camera moves, then every animation taking a billion years to start up and complete. Compare to FF7, where everything feels snappy and quick, and even the animations that are a little drawn out mostly feel that way for effect and so the attack has more visual impact.

The ability system upsets me because of the disparity between how much AP is required to master an ability and how much AP you can reasonably obtain by just playing through the game without grinding. Invariably I get a piece of equipment that is a statistical upgrade over what I'm currently using before I've learned all the abilities from the old piece, and now I have to choose between grinding out the last AP so I have that ability or forgoing the abilities in favor of better stats. I know in the long run it doesn't make a ton of difference, but the completionist in me hates it. I can stand grinding if it's for a good cause, but mastering a few situational passive abilities on an old piece of gear rarely feels worth it (and it only gets worse if I've managed to build up a backlog of gear with unlearned abilities).

MODOK was one of the very best parts of Quantumania!

It's specifically the black hole that swallowed Tycoon Castle that you enter with the airship - the other black holes don't do anything.

There's a fair number of solo instances that you have to do by yourself, but all the questing in between can be done together. There's also a bunch of dungeons and one-off boss fights you can do together - the first one pops up at level 16 in the MSQ, right after you first travel to the other city states.

Just got back from Guardians - it's a solidly upper-mid to high tier Marvel movie.

Good lord is there a lot of shouting in this movie. They're really going out of their way to play up the "dysfunctional" side of the "dysfunctional family that still comes together in times of crisis" trope.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn is going to live in my head for a while, because holy shit that scene whipped ass.

I felt like they did a good job wrapping up the stray plot threads and breaking up the band - everyone's destinations made sense for the characters as they've developed through 3+ movies. During the credits the friend I was seeing it with said "I think Chris Pratt is done with the MCU" and then immediately after that STAR LORD WILL RETURN popped up on the screen. lol whoops

The whole NORG sequence is just so nonsensical. Like, you already have the MD level as a dungeon, why was it necessary to add the Garden too? And then throwing in a bonus boss fight for what reason? Like, the only service to the plot NORG provides is revealing Cid and Edea are married, and even that could've come from somewhere else. In a game full of absurd plot threads NORG is one of the worst.

How much time did you spend progging it?

1457 pulls across 45 raid days. Total time spent in instance was a little over 150 hours.

My group cleared The Omega Protocol last night. Not really a fan of this one! Phase 1 is complete garbage, easily the worst phase ever put into an Ultimate. The fight is ludicrously punishing, even compared to other Ultimates - if anyone dies 95% of the time you wipe instantly, and the other 5% of the time you zombie to the end of the phase, people have to spend more resources to make up for the dead person's lost DPS, and then you wipe to enrage at the end of the next phase because you now don't have the DPS to meet the check.

In the interest of being fair, the back half of the fight is significantly better than the front. Phases 5 and 6 are genuinely satisfying to resolve (even if phase 6 is explicit that nobody is allowed to die). The fight is definitely visually spectacular, even to the point of being overwhelming at times. And any excuse to listen to Heartless is a big win in my book.

Overall, 4/10. Probably going to do as many reclears as my group can stand and then not come back to it for a very long time.

If you've done the 6.2 MSQ then you should be all caught up and ready to do new stuff on Tuesday. Make sure you've done all the quests from the 6.1 alliance raid as well. None of the other new stuff is gated behind anything recent.

The fastest way to get your ilvl up is going to be obtaining a set of crafted gear (either buy it off the MB or have a friend make it for you), then upgrade it on Tuesday. That'll get you to 620, which is more than enough to do the new content.
