It went about as well as you would expect. I can't believe their lead researcher was such an ass. Did he really think an AI model would be able to generate factual scientific papers when AI is not sentient and doesn't really understand what it is trained on or what he is doing? Or did he truly believe that nobody would type anything inappropriate into the box to see what would happen? Did they fail to test their creation before putting up the demo? I don't understand how things this stupid actually happen.

I'm not a huge fount of social knowledge or anything, but how is it you have a romantic partner you're serious enough about to move in with you, yet somehow you have discussed basic things like your pet cat or the bills? Look up your local laws and see how long she can live with you before she gets tenant rights, and then make sure and figure things out before its too late.

Or in true CE Man fashion: break up, hug your cat, and rethink your life.

Every single episode of the first season was engaging and excellent. While the second season clearly wants to keep exploring the same things in a wider context--and I'm all for that--the first episode was very poor. There was little content for hour long runtime, and everything was slow and dull. Does it get better?

I found both of those to be too difficult to enjoy and I ended up never finishing them. The first two DK games on SNES had hard but fair difficulty. The original Crash games took it a step further and had that "enjoy this fun game, but don't you dare beat it after renting it once or twice" difficulty that older games employed as a sales strategy. I know that there can be satisfyingly difficult games, but Tropical Freeze and Crash 4 took it too far for no reason in my opinion.

Me personally, I still kind of feel down all the time and a lot of the people in the small town I'm from seem cranky and anti-social too. How are things going for you? I realize that the pandemic has been officially "over" for some time and started over two years ago, but I'd like to know if anyone else is still in a funk. Sometimes I think it's just me, and sometimes I think there has just been shit going on. But part of me also thinks that things really went downhill at the end of 2019 and things just aren't, overall, doing better or on a trajectory to be better yet.

What do you think?

AI "art" is not itself art, but it might be the basis for art with further work applied. People comparing the outcry against AI art to the development of other new mediums are being disingenuous. Photography was hated originally because it endangered the livelihoods of landscape and portrait painters. Photography did take some of those jobs, but it still requires a good deal of skill and work on the part of a photographer to get good images. Moreover, portrait paintings and landscape paintings were and are still sought after because human artists can inject something special to the interpretation of the subject matter.

Tools like Stable Diffusion are different. You type in a sentence (which you can find on lexia or a similar gallery and make small adjustments to), move a couple of sliders (or not---the defaults work great 90% of the time, and for the remaining 10%, you just move them 'til prompt looks good) and then have the thing spit out as many pieces of art as you want. If none of them look anywhere close to good, you move a couple of words around the prompt or poke the sliders until something decent gets pushed out. You can even add some kind of basic scribbles and have the software "finish it" for you. Where, exactly, is the supposed creativity of the user coming from when creating these "works"?

Stable Diffusion was trained on billions of images---that isn't how a human learns to draw at all and it is very different than using a reference. It isn't a tool like a digital or physical brush: it does all the work for you, and can spit things out in any form or style you like. You can even further refine the model using specific images if you want something very specific that it doesn't do well out of the box. It is a phenomenal achievement of computer science, and it relies on billions of extant, tagged images in order work its magic. I've used almost all of them at this point, and I'll fight anyone who declares that people using Stable Diffusion are working hard to get their results. Some things it just won't do (like recreate likenesses of specific anime characters with very few references available) and for some things you need a different model. But if you earnestly sit down with Stable Diffusion and try and make something and aren't getting in the right ballpark in under 30 minutes, something has gone horribly wrong.

There is something fundamentally different about "regular" art mediums. Even stuff like making complex materials in Substance Designer requires a real negotiation between the artist and their medium, and you grow as a person the more work with a medium. Stable Diffusion is just a really fast Fiverr artist you direct and don't pay (or pay a monthly fee for work), not an art medium.

People know this, too. They want to desperately claim that they made their work, just like a painter made a painting. In fact, there has a been a flood of people who claim stubbornly that they did paint or draw something that is obviously AI produced.

Bonus points where two of the three predictions aren't actually events that would be considered significant enough for somebody to recall the exact month 50 years from now, let alone 1000. Like most people couldn't even tell you off-hand which year Hitler came into power, let alone the month in which he announced his campaign, and Hitler was vastly more historically significant than Trump will ever be.
Obviously he has been following current trends and looked up historical events in his futuristic database.

What I love most about this type of thing is that, if the human race survives that long and develops such advanced technology, why would you travel to this era in particular? Why is the time traveler a random person instead of an official or an intellectual? Why is there only one of them instead of a team of, say, researchers? When is he going to be forced back to his own time by some kind of enforcement agency?

Did they lose bigly? They still might take the House, and some horrid politicians like Ron Johnson won. Really, they just didn't have the historical wins they were expecting. That's not much of a loss, not with gerrymandering and control of the Supreme Court. They probably can't impeach Biden over and over again, but Democrats don't have the seats necessary. Roe v. Wade did this, but with time and gerrymandering they will eventually take the Legislative Branch, and with Moore v. Harper coming up, they'll never lose the Presidency again.

All that happened is that the big Republican win was slowed. We still can't do a thing about gerrymandering, the courts, or passing legislation that doesn't suck. The decline will just take longer.

Unless a diagnosis of schizophrenia means you need to be careful about the kind of media you consume, I'm like 99% sure anime isn't your problem. Anime featuring Truck-kun sending an ordinary person off to a fantasy world where he or she will either automatically awesome or have a second chance at becoming awesome in a world of high technology or fantasy are popular for a reason. The cost of living is skyrocketing, wages are stagnant, there is a housing crisis, a looming climate crisis which we can already feel, the political situation is tenuous in America, and there is a war on that features one country constantly threatening and then unthreatening to use nuclear weapons.

You can bake a cake or fly a kite all you like, but at some point, the stress starts eating away at most people to some degree. I live in a small town, and the other day, I swear every single person I met while running errands was close to Morbing out. Hasn't been this bad around here since COVID started.

Try stepping out of your comfort zone, do your best, and see someone if you need to. It's all any of us can do, really. Also, if it doesn't bother you too much, try dipping your toes into one of those cute girls doing cute things shows. Or give Stardew Valley or Story of Seasons or something a try if you haven't played those kinds of games. I've always found immersing myself in relaxing, slow-paced media I can control very helpful.

I saw an article just now about how there has been a rise in amateur "to catch a predator groups" where ordinary people will form groups or work by themselves to find adults preying on children online. They then either try and report these people to police (generally, the police seem not to want to have anything to do with these groups), confront them in real life, or try and find out who they are and send damaging photos of sexualized chats to their boss or families.

The article came to my attention on a tech news aggregate site, and a lot of posters were upset that the article framed these people in a negative light, which to these posters translated to "finding pedos is bad". In reality, the people interviewed who took part in these activities seemed incredibly self-righteous and certain of their infallibility, despite a lack of law enforcement training or knowledge of legal proceedings. Other posters pointed out that there has been a rise in claiming that LGBT folks are pedos, and that this sort of thing could become dangerous for regular people as America's political divide deepens.

But overall, most people seemed to think that these people were doing a good thing and should be encouraged. What do you think CE? Here is the original article (which may be behind a paywall) if anyone wants to read it:

I don't watch right-wing media, but from what I gather from speaking to those who do and reading their posts, Nancy Pelosi is a frequent scapegoat for everything that is wrong with America today. Other notables include the Clintons (did you know that the FBI has been protecting the Clintons and that Monika was actually underage when Bill was with her? Also, everything you've ever heard about Hillary is actually true!) and AOC (something something woke nonsense!). But it's often just Nancy Pelosi who is the focal point of various conspiracy theories and lies. So, a conservative might see an attack on Pelosi's husband as a good thing if they really believe what they are being sold by conspiracy theorists, especially if the attacker meant to get Nancy, and especially if conservative news dehumanizes them both and suggests the attack wasn't as bad as it seemed (there is a conspiracy theory making the rounds that the attacker was Paul Pelosi's secret gay lover, as if that would make any difference).
