I don't understand any of the hate it got. It's probably my favorite MCU film to date, and I like basically all of them except the Eternals. It was full of action, incredible style, and was just plain fun. It didn't ruin WandaVision because in the show, it was about Wanda letting go of Vision, which she did. But her kids were another thing entirely, not to mention the obviously evil book and the prophecy concerning the Scarlett Witch. It also provided some great character growth for Strange.

If people seem fine at first but have no friends or social network of any kind--and didn't just move to a different state or country--there is always a reason why. In this fellow's case, he loves talking about politics, but is so far down the rabbit hole that even people with similar political leanings find him too strange and extreme. If you manage to see a fresh post on a controversial topic on a sub like r/conservative before the moderators "clean" up posts, you'll actually see that there are plenty of Republicans who vote Republican, spout the common memes and talking points, but aren't nearly as extreme as people might think. Another thing you'll run into is people with the same general world views will buy into different conspiracy theories and have trouble getting along because, to them, everyone else's conspiracy theory is obviously ridiculous while theirs is just fine.

Once they get the hook in you though, you're done. I don't think it's possible for someone to dig themselves out until the light bulb comes on naturally. For example, you could choose to do mathematics, carpentry, weaving, sculpting, painting, study history---whatever you like as long as it is something productive of your choice that you might find fulfilling. So, no Netflix 40 hours a week unless you are studying film or want to do a film blog or something

if so that's just even more reinforcement towards my point. if hes in his 30s and still getting grounded, hes probably pretty significantly impaired.
Your thesis earlier was that a way of handing out of control behavior is to ignore it. I have literally never seen him post anything that wasn't abusive or inflammatory. He has allegedly sent women on this site creepy, unsolicited messages and been banned before because of it. Which is more reasonable, everyone putting Duncan's endless stream of accounts on ignore over and over again, or him being permanently banned? Permanently removing him from the site makes using it safer and more pleasant, and would deny him an outlet for more toxic behavior and its reinforcement.

To be honest, your enabler stance is really starting to piss me off. It spits in the face of disabled people who do try their best to be good and need some understanding when things don't work out. The admins of this site have a responsibility to keep this site safe, Duncan's guardians (assuming he really them and needs them) have a responsibility to more closely monitor his activities online and get him more help if he needs it, and Ducan himself has a responsibility to try his best to do well with whatever cognitive and emotional abilities he has. The only responsibility that posters here have is to try and be generally OK people and follow the rules. Most of us do OK with both.

The two biggest hurdles to the broader acceptance of mentally and physically disabled people in my opinion are people that hide behind a diagnosis to excuse ridiculously toxic behavior and those who insist that everyone else needs to accept this because the person is sick. Let's extend this thinking to the case of a person who has no real choice in their behavior. If a caregiver takes a late-stage dementia person to a museum, cool! Maybe the person's behavior will be a little strange, but we live in a society, and folks will understand. But if that person becomes too disruptive, they'll be asked to leave. If the behavior becomes too extreme or there is a pattern, they'll likely be banned from the venue and the caregiver will need to find something else to occupy the person's time.

Please stop advocating for endless tolerance. There is a logical limit to what should be allowed, and one isn't lacking in compassion for setting such limits.

how disabled is duncan? like you said, only an expert can tell. and that's about where my agreement ends. personally i'm not keen on making an attempt to hold him (or others like him) accountable for his actions because i dont know if hes capable of even understanding why theyre bad in the first place. i dont mean that as a dig, but like i said, a lot of people overestimate the abilities of developmentally disabled people just because they can speak/type coherent sentences, and on the chance that he's more disabled than he appears, dunking on a handicapped dude for the crime of being annoying/wrong/shitty on the internet just feels kinda gross inside tbh. if you cant deal with him, just block him and move on if he comes back.

What you are saying might come from a good place, but practically it doesn't make a lot of sense. He keeps getting banned because he keeps breaking the rules. If he can't follow the rules, then he doesn't need to post here. Posting on GameFAQs isn't some kind of basic human right, and online communities have a right to set standards. What you've said about Duncan could be true of literally any of the other trolls that infest these boards. Nobody here even knows for sure if Duncan has any kind of mental or physical problems. We had a guy some time ago fake having cancer for sympathy.

Frankly, if anyone here is bad off enough that they can't function or control themselves beyond limited conversations on limited subjects, I hope their caretakers or guardians would be monitoring their internet usage and steer them in a better direction.

And lest you call me ableist, I actually am physically disabled in real life and have advocated seriously for disabled people in the past. Disabled people should be reasonably accommodated and treated with compassion. It is not reasonable to expect that a super toxic person who can't follow rules--whatever the reason for that behavior--should continue to have posting privileges indefinitely. Boundaries and limits are a healthy part of life. Everyone at some point needs to be told "no", and there is nothing discriminatory about it.

Is that really the reason? I know that people often reach for "sheltered", "spoiled", or "immature" when dealing with a mentally or physically disabled person who behaves in a frustrating way. Sometimes it is because they really aren't functional, or have uncontrollable aspects to their disorder, or it can be because they are assholes. Only an expert can really tell the difference. At the end of the day, while it is nice to extend extra help and tolerance to those who struggle, a person is ultimately answerable for their actions. A mental or physical illness--unless you've got like a brain tumor or dementia or something--isn't an excuse for consistently bad behavior.

He needs to be banned until he can function in a non-abusive way.

Even after over two years of treatment, my life is only a shadow of what it could have been if I'd been treated from an early age. Most of the men in my family suffer heart attacks by 40, likely because of sleep apnea. In general, it produces a fair number of stroke victims in their 30s and 40s too.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
If the government has no reasonable suspicion that a person is a child predator, they have no reason to riffle through their messages and photos. Automated scanning technology generates false positives, and applying it to absolutely everything will generate many more false positives with real world consequences. It will waste police time and resources that would be better spent solving actual crimes. It will make it harder to police actual abuse, and may lead to life-ending accusations for innocent people. And that's before the use of mandatory scanning is extended to regular crimes too, especially with global political instability and a looming global economic crisis.

"It's for the children" is a popular vehicle to push legislation like this because realistically how can you even argue against protecting them?
There are two good arguments. One, the legislation really isn't for the children: it's a bill to give the police more power, and although it is framed around the issue of child abuse, it is easy to see how they will want these powers for regular policing too (I'm not familiar with all the details myself, but apparently there would be a way for police to generally access the harvested data for other crimes). The second is that the bill was written on false premises: they let companies and private individuals tell them what is possible and what is needed instead of listening to independent experts. They won't even meet with any groups critical of the bill, even if that criticism has nothing to do with encryption or privacy. There are plenty of knowledgeable advocates that think this sucks for not seriously addressing harm to children, but they are being ignored too.

For example, when EARN IT was making the rounds (that's the US version of this that is waiting in the wings for its time to shine), some advocates were very concerned that increased government control over communications would lead to a reduction in the ability to discuss abuse and for victims to have their voices heard. Not all victims are happy with an increase in the status quo: many don't like that certain organizations are allowed to retain abuse material indefinitely for research and police purposes. Other paths to reducing abuse--like targeted police actions or increased aid and social support to help stop production abuse material--are never seriously considered by politicians.

The excuse is to prevent child abuse, despite the fact that the legislation is based on lies, exaggerated data, and is designed to destroy secure communications and increase surveillance powers generally. The politicians involved have apparently refused to meet with any of the organizations that have voiced concerns not only about privacy, but about the fact that it is garbage that won't help kids.

For several years, I had an on-again off-again friendship with a certain person online who was 20% solid friend, and 80% manipulative creepy, soul-sucking, and abusive. They claimed to have a rare personality disorder and some other mental affliction (but never elaborated on that part), but refused to seek treatment. One of the things that apparently can help is group sessions, but the doctor who diagnosed them refused to refer them to one, saying it might be damaging or dangerous for the other participants.

A couple of years ago (or was it just one?) I finally had had enough and blocked them, thanks to some advice from you folks.

They recently added me back to their friend list. Like...I think the correct choice is to ignore the friend request, but I'm currently having a rough time and don't have any friends at all. In terms of being in the gutter, my life is near rock bottom. They used to say that me being friends with them was special and meant a lot to them. I thought that was perhaps pure manipulation, but I've since read that people with their personality disorder can in fact have like one or two friends they latch on two and absolutely nobody else. I'd also like to believe people can change.

CEMen, guide me with your wisdom. No seriously, I'm stuck and need actual advice here.

Most of the people doing this I think would not be involved with creative visual art in any way were it not for the AI. So why not let them have some sort of input into the creative process and see what happens?
Because they still aren't involved: there is no creativity involved in AI art. You are not drawing or painting or sculpting anything. So-called "prompt crafting" consists of going on Reddit or one of those gallery sites and grabbing an already existing prompt for something you like and messing with random seeds until a thing you like more pops out from Stable Diffusion, NovelAI, or whatever else you might be using. Maybe it's just something cool to mess with, and that's fine---I like it too. But you see a ton of people claiming they "made" a piece and are proud of it, or just flat out claiming they are good at drawing, painting, pastels etc. and made it themselves.

You have not become creative by imagining it might be cool to see a "chibi catgirl in an autumnal forest with a wizard tower and purple sky in the background", because literally anybody who draws or paints thinks things like that. It's what you do before you start working. As you work through the forms on paper or in clay or on canvas or digital tablet, you become closer to your work and begin to express your sensibilities. It becomes your "chibi catgirl in an autumnal forest with a wizard tower and purple sky in the background", not an algorithm's "interpretation" of your prompt. Claiming an AI piece as your own work is like claiming something you paid a guy on Fiverr for is work you made.

Now, the use case you pointed out where a guy maybe wants a background because his real interest is character drawing is fine (though it would be better if he at least touched that background up a bit before using it---especially with unanswered questions about copyright). Even better, I think, is using AI generated art for inspiration or as the basis for a larger piece.

Kakapo posted...
People thought cameras and photography in general would destroy art.
Machine learning--AI--is fundamentally different than what came before it. There is active work being done on AI 2D art, AI 3D art, AI animation, AI text generation, AI chat bots, AI voice generation, and AI music generation. Some of it is already very impressive. How much need will there be for any form of human creativity in say 10 years? Companies won't pay people for things they can have a program spit out. Robots also continues to advance. In 10 or 20 years of software and hardware advancement, how many jobs will be available for regular human beings?

Those this topic is about AI art specifically, watching an unforeseen leap in a computer's ability to perform what many considered to be a uniquely human task is unsettling, and rams home the point that humans aren't special and calls into question what a future world will look like.

I originally wrote this as a reply to another topic, but was told nobody would look at it and the topic kind of fizzled. So allow me to try again!

I wonder why people don't think good AI art is a big deal.If computers can do everything as good if not better than a human (we aren't there yet with AI art, but it's coming) then what are people supposed to do for work? How do we better ourselves? Increasingly sophisticated robots will come for most manual labor jobs in time. In the past, new technological innovations created new jobs. With competent machine learning and good robotics, you just won't need nearly as many people working as we have now. People dream of a more enlightened humanity with greater leisure time and UBI, but that doesn't seem to be the path the world is headed down.

AI "art" is also problematic for other reasons than taking jobs. Images and voices can already be generated with OK realism, and in time they will be perfectly real. Video and 3D modeling are being worked on. You'll soon be able to fabricate news and criminal evidence that is indistinguishable from reality. Our legal system and society at large aren't prepared for that. Another negative social aspect is the diminishing and devaluing of human creativity: already people are claiming that they "painted" or "drew" an AI image, often one generated with a common prompt that they changed a word or two for. They often won't admit it when confronted either, even if they have a picture with that weird floating ghost text or funky hands and fingers that even a total beginner wouldn't draw. There has even been at least one case of somebody taking what an artist was drawing in a live stream and having an AI "finish" the piece. If you have the know-how, you can apparently already train the AI to produce works in the style of even relatively unknown artists if you have several pieces.

It's kind of a more philosophical thing, but if computers can even mimic human creativity, then what can humans do to find meaning or value?

My guy, if she is already seeing you while having a boyfriend, and is willing to leave that boyfriend, she'll eventually do the same thing to you that she is doing to her current boyfriend.
