The trans women (so far) in this thread would not self-identify as such and could be seriously offended if someone else did identify them as such.

I wouldn't be seriously offended because I kinda flip between trans woman/femboy anyway (is it a phase? I dunno), and if anyone thought I could seriously 'trap' them I'd probably be WAY too flattered to be mad. But the prevailing culture is sort of annoying.

Due to the complexity of the situation it is not strictly a slur, but nevertheless my friend is probably not being fully honest in saying that he "knows several trans women" that call themselves traps.

I should say that I don't know your friend and maybe they do know a bunch of trans women who do this, I just meant to say that in general if someone said that I'd be like 'haha, yeah okay buddy.' But for any given individual saying that, that's up to you to judge, I dunno them.

It's certainly a tricky situation, it's true that there are some trans women who use it regarding themselves but I would absolutely *not* assume it's acceptable to everyone as like you say it very much *is* offensive to many if not most, and rightfully so.

For me personally, yeah the term grosses me out. It insinuates that we aren't who we say we are and that by presenting female we are fooling people who see us women - it's not, we *are* women so it's not a "trap" to be seen as we are. I have cis male friends who enjoy crossplay and enjoy the term for themselves and absolutely that's fine, they're male so it doesn't mind me at all because they like to appear passing in cross while living as a man - they are not trans women. If they used the term on me I'd be pissed.

Unfortunately the majority of the cis public has a complete lack of understanding around trans people and in their ignorance they often blend femboys+crossdressers+drag with trans women which is where the problems come from, with that frustration all falling solely on trans women.

Most trans women do not claim the word trap at all like other slurs. I accept that some are fine with it - often they're also fine with being referred to as femboys as well - but that is absolutely *not* the norm so only use it if the specific person enjoys it... and even then I personally would never do it unless they're actually cis (although even I personally wouldn't but I don't care if others do).

Another issue with traps is it's historical association with fetishization which trans women largely want no part of - once again not all, some actually do, but it plays into a lot of hateful rhetoric we get baggaged with people sexualizing our existence and arguing we're inappropriate for all-ages representation. Think back to a lot of 2000s 4chan culture parading femboy characters as some sorta gotcha to call people gay for being attracted to boys, a lot of that shit's annoying for us. Many of just want to live and be seen as we are and not be the butt of some joke that inherently puts an asterisk on our gender.

I'd like to add that if there are trans women who call themselves traps, from my experiences, one of two things are going on

1) They're radical, anarchic genderqueers who just don't give a fuck. They exist, they're cool, but they're kinda rare from my experience. (Or they're just genderfluid in general.)

2) They're still 4channers or chan-adjacent, and at best simply haven't had the time or opportunity to grow out of that culture and their terminology and ways of thinking, and at worst have fully embraced a self-loathing, blackpilled trans culture that is sadly all too common in that sphere.

I'd be pretty hesitant to put much stock in the #2's, because they're still letting chan culture dictate the ways it's okay to talk about trans people, and they're... kinda behind the times. Just because 4chan's okay with slurs doesn't mean everyone else is. I think at least some of them will grow out of it.

I think, ideally, the word 'trap' shouldn't need to be broadly identified as a slur when it's being directed towards crossdressing boys (although that doesn't automatically make it okay), but the problem is that it just carries a lot of baggage with it regarding the sort of objectifying and very rigid ways that people think of anyone with feminine features. It's sort of straddling the line of annoying and offensive. Policing all of the ways in which 'boys will be boys' is kind of a waste of time, probably, because people are just gonna be horny and I kinda think there should be a place for being a little off-color when horny, but I think it's best to avoid the usage of the word when possible because whenever it's applied to a trans woman it's just really mean-spirited.

Although honestly if someone says they 'know several trans women who are okay with it' I'm probably going to think they're lying. Unless they visit the lgbt subforum of 4chan, in which case it's probably true in the sense that they see it often but it's totally useless.

This game is extremely reminiscent of Mario's Time Machine for the PC, if anyone remembers that game - it had a similar art style and gameplay where you have to talk to people and then fill in the blanks (except it was real-world history)

Charlie Cox's performance of Matt in this show is just the funniest thing because his line delivery comes across as very 'naturalistic' to me, like he's trying to mimic the behavior of a real life person in this situation, while nobody else is doing that, and it makes him come across as sort of lovably awkward (in a good way - I like the way he approaches the character)

I don't need to, fortunately, because I already know that Trafalgar was not the most accurate pollster of 2020, I've looked this up already. There were other pollsters more accurate. In terms of 'guessing the races correctly', they were not accurate at all - their reputation for this is entirely based on 2016 when they called Trump winning the election, but their presidential race predictions in 2020 were hilariously bad. In terms of having a fairly consistent bias, they're reasonably accurate, which is why 538 moved them up.

That's another reason why VR won't completely revolutionize gaming, it's simply inaccessible to many people who can't use it effectively

For as much as the expectation is that VR will put you right into the game, the reality is that having to put on a headset and move around adds another barrier to getting into the game. I have no doubt that VR tech will continue to get better and provide some really interesting gaming experiences but I'm sort of skeptical that we're on the verge of a huge revolution where VR takes over gaming.

Yeah, I expect that on the developer side of things there's still a lot of changes happening behind the scenes that will influence the end products. But just from the side of taking stock of gaming history, as a consumer, console generations feel like a murky thing.

I feel like I've gotten to the point where I'm just not discerning enough to really notice any sort of increased visual fidelity, games look about as good as I am ever going to be able to appreciate and there's diminishing returns for me beyond this point

Microsoft is definitely done with the concept, but I think Sony has at least 1 more in them. Nintendo might just release Switch enhancements for the next 10 years.

To me, it's more the fact that there just isn't really that much that delineates the generations anymore. The last really big fundamental, revolutionary change in how powerful the consoles were was between the PS2/Xbox/GC gen and the PS3/360/Wii gen - those all changed the way games look and felt and created a new paradigm, and you had to get the new consoles right away. Yeah, the PS4/Xbone/Wii U gen further increased the power of the consoles, but now with PS5/Xbox Series whatever/Switch it's like... a lot of people are still on their PS4s and the PS5 only has a handful of key exclusives, nobody really considers the latest Xbox a must-have anymore by any metric, and the Switch is barely even a part of this 'generation', having been released several years earlier and completely doing its own thing. This 'generation' doesn't really feel like anything, to me. So many games are ports and remakes upscaled to a new console, and a lot of games are multiplatform on PC as well which knows not the concept of generations at all. I don't even mean for this to sound lamenting - I think gaming in the 20's is amazing, way better than the 10's and the 00's. I just don't really think of the consoles in generations anymore. To me, the PS4 era was the last true "generation" of consoles and everything has kinda forked off in its own direction now, with no foundational shifts in the fundamental ability of what games are able to do from console to console.

I think the funniest way to do it would be to have him voicing some normal character that doesn't sound like the Mario voice at all, but then he like mocks Mario for some reason and slips into the voice suddenly and then right back out of it again

Honestly, my first thought when I saw the trailer was "is the penguin king Charles Martinet?" that kind of deep, gravelly voice is quietly a bankable part of Martinet's non-Mario repertoire

I don't think there's any evidence that Martinet can't do a more serious voice, he just hasn't had to in any of the games for obvious reasons. Maybe he actually can't, but I also seriously doubt that Illumination bothered to find out either way. 99% chance they just booked they biggest stars they could find and didn't consider Martinet for the role at all.

I've heard that it's hard for Martinet to do the voice for long periods of time, but I don't know if that's true or not for sure.

I think the non-English dubs all showed a pretty good way forward with having a voice that takes cues from Charles Martinet's version of Mario but doesn't go full Martinet, dialing it back a bit more to normal person voice. They all sound pretty good in their own right. None of them sound anything like Pratt.

It's gonna be so weird if they have to soft-reboot Daredevil because I feel like Daredevil S1 is such a definitive origin story for that character now, I don't really think you could even possibly do better
