It depends on the game, but for the super bosses, sometimes weapons just bounced right off them or went to zero durability immediately.

Apart from Y:LAD, equippable weapons always seemed like an afterthought to the RGG experience. Half the fun is just picking something up off the street and ramming into someone's nethers. The idea of managing an equipment loadout and keeping an eye on the durability of your swords, spears, and tasers seems a bit against the philosophy of street brawling in a modern setting.

This is not for lack of trying on RGG's part, of course. Once Kenzan happened, a game that requires sword use since you're a samurai, they tried putting "weapon modding" into Yakuza 3, which was just another list to complete at the end of the day because your cheap weapons didn't really do much and the expensive weapons were great but only lasted so long, and wouldn't work against the serious bosses, anyway.

Then in Yakuza 5 they tried to make a character somewhat centered around weapon use. They gave him infinite weapons so you could play with his modified style, but the weapons were so weak that it was almost not worth it.

Then there were the weapon searches/crafting in Yakuza 0, another list to fill. Then they dropped the concept entirely in Yakuza 6 and the Judgment series. Kiwami 2 made an effort to bring them back and actually gave some decent infinite powerful weapons to shoot for, but it still just seemed for its own sake.

The skill tree for Slugger gives me special moves for weapons, but surely I would have to leave Slugger in order to use those weapons if they're just the ones you equip regularly.

Oh, you mean the skills where weapon durability doesn't go down on specific types of weapons?

It's important to note that that's only for the 1st Heat Bar, so either you have to be very cautious with your attacks so you don't build up too much Heat, or you have to wear an accessory that keeps your Heat at 0.

It'll be in the next update. It took me a while to figure out that it was the fact that the story objective couldn't be at the Grand for things to advance (because the last story objective for the Cab Club is there).
