An overly talkative defendant can easily get themselves convicted of crimes they didn't actually commit by falling into traps on the stand. When you start pleading the fifth to everything, it gets suspicious, but you still have a right not to incriminate yourself.

Like the same reason you don't talk to cops.

Iirc Durham has been called little Chicago cause on a ratio basis (murders vs population) its about the same.

I've heard certain parts of Raleigh are just as bad but it just doesn't get as much attention cause they don't wanna make the capitol look bad. But idk.

It's not even a criminal trial, either. In a civil trial, juries absolutely are allowed to infer guilt from a decision to take the fifth. The only real reason I can think of that his attorneys would tell him to do this is because they think there's an actual criminal case coming where it will help him out.
