Does it?

If you plead the fifth, do you have something to hide?

I feel this is in the same vein as saying if you have nothing to hide you should talk to the police when any lawyer will tell you don't talk to the police ever even when you're 100% innocent.

Do I think Trump has something to hide? Absolutely. I don't think everyone who pleads the fifth does, however.

Depends on context. Someone who has made a career off running scams and other fraud and using illegal stalling tactics to get out of court cases because the person suing ran out of money for a lawyer or else died during all the delays? They're definitely hiding stuff. Average joe who doesn't want to risk being sued even should he be found not guilty for some car crash? Probably not hiding anything and a good use of the right.

well anything you say can and will be used against you, most people end up incriminating themselves when they blabber so as a rule they tell you not to talk without your attorney present, so they can talk for you.

But generally remaining silent and refusing to speak about an issue has negative connotations in peoples mind. Like just imagine this
"What's in the box?"
"I don't want to say"
"Is it porn?"
"I don't want to say"
and yes, pleading the fifth amendment by definition is not wanting to incriminate yourself

Yeah where people get away with it I guess is there's always that chance what you'd have to say wouldn't necessarily incriminate you to what the case is about but something else.

Nah not necessarily. I know this is a trump reference obviously and the dude is definitely guilty of a ton of crimes, but it's just a right to avoid self incrimination. It's a good right to have for regular people dealing with a legal system that will try to get you on something even though you're innocent

Often, but not always. There are legitimate, non-"I'm hiding something" reasons to plead the fifth even if most of the time it's just people trying to withhold evidence of their crimes.

i think some people forget you can only invoke the 5th if your testimony will be self incriminating and can lead to other criminal charges or evidence being found, so factually you are quite literally hiding something

An overly talkative defendant can easily get themselves convicted of crimes they didn't actually commit by falling into traps on the stand. When you start pleading the fifth to everything, it gets suspicious, but you still have a right not to incriminate yourself.

Yes, but, the catch is the "something to hide" might be unrelated to the charges at hand. Of course, the key word there in turn is "might".

Like the same reason you don't talk to cops.

This is 100% accurate.

Never, never, never talk to the police (or someone investigating in this case) without first consulting a lawyer (who will most likely tell you to not talk to them.)
Even a candid "off the record" conversation to your "friend" officer Bob who is helping out coaching the t-ball team can be used against you.

No... you can invoke the 5th at anytime BECAUSE what you say may be incriminating.

officer: where you coming from, where you going?
innocent you: i was at the gas staion and now heading home
officer: so you were at the gas station?
Innocent you: yup, filled up my car

what you don't know is there was a murder at the gas station and now you just put yourself at the scene.
