Totally agree.

Peter Capaldi's first episode showed incredible promise. He was confused and traumatised and scared. He was angry, he stole a homeless guy's coat after yelling at him a bunch. It was kind of upsetting to see this character of the Doctor in such an unfamiliar and uncomfortable situation.

But frankly, I thought that was one of three times his Doctor really shone. His first series had him being an angry asshole, and eventually he became president of the world because Moffat's gonna Moffat. Seeing such an unlikable Doctor so often was kinda hard to watch for a whole season, which I think they realised. Then they handwaved that away with his second season, where after a long absence from Clara, he's become kinder in the interim. Clara takes a job at the school that Susan goes to in the first episode of the series, which felt like a weird detail to just throw in there, and the Doctor was just kind of there. People like the Heaven Sent/Hell Bent thing, but I wasn't a fan tbh.

Then they had to do a light reboot for his third season because they took a year long hiatus. This had some more interesting moments like the Doctor being blind, and I also thought the patch job they did during his regeneration where he spent his entire run finding out what makes him the Doctor and passes that on to Thirteen was a cute touch, but it was too little too late. I didn't really like Matt Smith all that much, and Peter Capaldi was a shot at a fresh start and an interesting new turn for the show - but he was bland and inconsistent, and the potential of the run was wasted.

Jodie Whittaker, on the other hand, carried her entire run on her back. Chibnall's writing was consistently weak, and he insisted on writing for like half of the episodes during his run. He wrote the Flux season by the seat of his pants, which is why the villains are dogshit and there's no actual point to any of it or any satisfying resolution. Some of the episodes were my favorites in years - Demons of the Punjab should go down as one of Chibnall's best episodes, as should Village of the Angels. But no matter how weak the episode was, Jodie was a consistent highlight. Her Doctor was fantastic, and I loved her performance. It had a very Davies-esque energy, very bubbly and techy - I liked her season one characterisation the best, where she had this passion for learning and being able to give people the information they needed to draw their own conclusions. It was a really exciting and wholesome time.

Orphan 49 or whatever it's called is the worst episode of the modern show, period. And there have been some real stinkers. People point to Love and Monsters as the nadir of modern Who, but as silly as it is and as unrelated to the show as it is, I think it's batshit insanity has aged kind of well?? Like it's not a good episode, but even being as slapshot as it is, it's kind of entertaining to behold. Moffat had an episode where he was patting himself on the back for having a non-binary actor portray a non-binary character, but the character was a non-gendered clone race of warrior grunts who spoke in vague mouth-noises who the other characters treated more like a pet than a person. He also had a "mind virus" episode that seemed like a tired cribbing of a creepypasta, which was the absolute low point of Capaldi's run. Orphan 49 is worse than both of them - it's like a SyFy original movie, with the cheap army costumes and the CGI they use for the one monster suit they had for the episode, and the gritty urban sets later in the episode. The twist comes at you from miles away, and the characters barely have anything to do.

Despite Thirteen's run having my least favourite episode of the show, she's still one of my favorite Doctors. I absolutely agree, Jodie Whittaker deserved better material. The shit she was given for at least half of her run wasn't flattering. But I'll give her this: she portrayed the Doctor as best she could, and her character elevated the show through thick and thin. The run is mediocre because of Chibnall, not because of Jodie. She was the best part of it. Episodes like Village of the Angels show how good she could have been with the right material - imagine a whole season with Russell T. Davies.

Michelin stars are awarded by only the most covert critics. Apparently there's a whole protocol for if a critic feels like they've been found out. All that because some car enthusiast was stranded while they patched a flat, and had a transcendent dining experience they had to share with the world.

I was thinking if I made a bingo card, I could put "Highly suspect crowd goes crazy for highly suspect company." somewhere on the outer panels.
For the most part, I agree. Keanu kinda bucked the trend. He had a real renaissance during that period of time and everybody loved him. Everybody loved Cyberpunk and CD Projekt Red too, but even now after Matrix 4, Keanu has good publicity due to his nice guy status and John Wick being a top 10 action franchise.

Even now, Keanu has good cred. One of the most lovable people in Hollywood.

MrMallard

Cancer is inevitable. Nobody lives forever without their DNA mutating into a mutant zombie mass of infinite growth, it just doesn't happen. Cancer is about as natural as the sun in the sky and the wind in the trees.

Racism is some dumb shit that's reinforced by our surroundings, and can absolutely be unlearned.

Personal faith, belief in a higher power or an adherence to scripture that makes your life better and puts you on a good path are all good things. I would argue that churches and authority figures that enforce their interpretation of scripture as the word of God are a much bigger issue than religion itself.

To eliminate depression, we need to eliminate trauma and mental health stigma. Unless those are addressed by erasing depression, we're only at risk of more extreme mental illnesses.

So the clear winner here is Gamefaqs, because racists push a sensationalized anti-religious agenda that's about as radical as the far fringes of religion and it makes people depressed. Also some people get cancer sometimes, and that's not OK.

Not exactly. The same restrictions do apply but you have to understand what the restriction actually is.

Under the most strict interpretation possible, only God can create life forms and humans are forbidden from attempting to copy it. This would include art. It is not limited merely to Muhammad, but anyone and any thing, even animals.

That restriction is compounded with another restriction that prohibits encouraging idolatry, which is why folks are more sensitive to pictures of Muhammad than Fatimah as the former is more likely to draw away worship of God into worshipping a picture of a mortal.

Because of this, if you look up 7th century Islamic art, you will find only abstract art.

Now people are unsurprisingly people and different people practice different parts of their religions. The same way christians everywhere might ignore the part about not lying you'll find less of them are okay with ignoring the part about not worshipping other gods. The same applies to Muslims. Many probably don't care at all if you depict the profit, some will care and some will go further and demand no depictions of Fatimah or any other living thing.

There's no easy solution.
Huh, okay. TIL - thanks for the elaboration.

I can understand the upset. Muslims don't like Mohammad being portrayed, we've seen it time and time again. Fatimah? Doesn't seem like the same restrictions apply. There must have been a way to depict the story of Fatimah while respecting the wishes of the Muslim community in depicting the prophet Mohammad.

According to the plot synopsis, the story of Fatimah is found by a young boy facing oppression, and he takes heart in the story to build himself up. On its own, it's a story about faith. The one sticking point is Mohammad being portrayed. It doesn't sound like he has much to do with the plot outside of being Fatimah's father.

There's also a schism between the Shia interpretation of the scripture and of historical events and the Sunni perspective, so no matter how you spin it, this was going to be a controversial movie. The idea that this is "dumm consurvative muzlimz censorship!!" seems reductive, and a bunch of dumbfuck anti-muslim yahoos are gonna use this as an excuse to talk about how Islam is "incompatible with western values" and "inherently oppressive" without understanding the whole story

If you wanna go and watch this movie, go and find a way to watch it. It hasn't been scrubbed from the annals of history. Other chains are showing it, and it will come out on home media in one way or another.

Also, let's not forget this is a platform that had such a rampant lack of moderation that there was an algorithmic rabbit hole linking hundreds of YouTube videos hosted by children, through which grown adults would post time stamps and express pleasure when the kids were hurt or otherwise uncomfortable. Channels like DaddyOFive where children were actually being abused for content was both monetized and popular, despite posting videos of their kids covered in bruises and crying.

On a lesser note, it's also a platform that removed dislikes and ruined its entire ratings system by using harassment as a smokescreen, despite the fact that it was clearly a marketing move so that advertisers wouldn't be associated with a negative product. They coached it in terms of "preventing harassment" while making the fruits of that harassment exclusively available to the people being harassed.

"They made a free product and now they're trying to monetise it" - YouTube videos have been ad billboards for years now. The people viewing videos through an ad-blocker are dwarfed by the amount of people using the official apps and viewing the site sans ad-block. They keep making negative changes to make it more advertiser-friendly, and they've made the atmosphere of the site so sterile and inhospitable by ruling that a snippet of a copywritten song in the background of a completely unrelated video is tantamount to copyright infringement.

YouTube is an Alphabet company. It has Google money, a megacorporation that's richer than any human being alive by the monetization of their wide myriad of services - some of which have become tech standards in everything from GPS systems to phones to computers. A lot of that wealth comes from making a profile on you, and shopping it around to advertisers. Your personal information makes Google rich, and that platform is used to direct you to more media that Google has monetized - like YouTube videos you're more likely to watch, keeping you in a cycle of advertisements and video content that makes Google more money the more you participate with their platform. Google is making money out the asshole on every online platform you use, every day.

So god forbid you be upset when they cram one more ad down your throat. When they interrupt a three and a half minute song with an Audible ad in the middle for pennies on the dollar, on every song, that millions of people are participating in 24 hours a day.

Google/Alphabet didn't even make YouTube, they bought it.

There's a line in the sand here. You can't stand with self-proclaimed Christian fascists and go "well I don't agree with the bad ones but the point rings true!". You need to put your foot down and denounce these fuckfaces, or you need to shut the fuck up and accept that you're as much of a morally bankrupt piece of shit as they are.

These far right conservative fucks have been appropriating fascist imagery since Trump's rise to power. 4chan memed Trump alongside swastikas, and people who were "trump-pilled" were brought into the broader group of white supremacists who would form the alt-right through those edgy shitposts.

When Trump got elected, you had Richard Spencer - a neo-nazi - incited his base to throw up nazi salutes:

https://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/videos/richard-spencer-leads-neo-nazis-in-hail-trump-salute/

People said to ignore that radical fringe base because it was a bunch of yahoos with no real power. Spencer would go on to normalise the alt-right in the media, who gave him the attention he and his group desired.

Then in Charlottesville, people marched with swastika and confederate flags and chanted "blood and soil". People characterised most of the protestors as misled civil protestors who cared about American history and were unfairly lumped in with neo-Nazis, who mustn't have realised the swastika flags of those far right protestors. In fact, it was wrong of people to spread unmasked pictures of those who attended the rally - people were more concerned about people losing their jobs for marching under a Nazi banner than they were about the counter-protestor who died after being hit by a car.

Then BLM protests were bad because of concrete milkshakes and "lawless rioters", and antifa was a fascist organisation trying to shut down free speech, but mask-mandate riots were justified because masks were fascism and a deep state satanic ploy to kidnap children and extract Adrenophine from them. It was more acceptable for the elderly and disabled to die - to the point that in certain states, certain disabled people had Do Not Rescusitate orders added to their medical files without their knowledge or consent - than it was to enforce measures to limit the spread of a deadly virus.

"Culling the herd" wasn't fascism, despite the precedent set by fascist movements to cull and limit "undesirable" populations like the disabled. Preventing a widespread virus that killed indisciminantly? That was fascism. Letting people die because their deaths "improved the herd"? That was just good for society, not a fascist ideal coached in concern about the economy and the welfare of society.

Then there was the truck protestors earlier this year. Again, these dumbfuck conservative protestors flew crimson-red flags with a white circle surrounding a Swastika - just like in Charlottesville five years before. And the line was STILL "those were bad-faith actors who didn't represent the whole of the group, and it reflects worse on the people pointing this out than it does on the protestors letting their brethren fly neo-nazi paraphernalia in the name of their shared cause".

And now we have self-proclaimed Christian fascists - not just happy with jailing women who've miscarried as murderers and supporting politicians who want to repeal the right to use contraception, but calling gay people child groomers and inciting violence against queer businesses.

These dumb far-right fucks have had seven years to denounce this shit as it's popped up again and again and again. It has been expected of the right's critics to give them the benefit of the doubt at every turn. But every time some shit like this popped up, people deflected and said that actual neo-nazis and fascist groups were misappopriating the conservative base and were not, in fact, being empowered. They were a fringe group, not representative of the broader conservative movement. The real fascists were the people making a big deal and trying to get good, salt-of-the-earth, everyday Americans fired for being tricked by those gosh-danged nazi fringe extremists.

But look at where we are. We went from disenfranchised loners in online spaces being compelled to protest in favour of confederate statues - statues that were erected in the south as a direct protest of civil rights - to self-proclaimed Christian Fascists picketing a gay bar like it's an abortion clinic.

This was always the end goal. And anyone who's been paying attention for the past seven years has seen this coming.

I have my reservations about the franchise in general, because I was always something of a fairweather fan who was drawn into the sequels and like superhero movies through a friend. I liked TFA, and I was lukewarm on TLJ specifically because of how it treated Finn as comic relief and disrespected his sacrifice in the last movie.

The light-speed ramming scene was breathtaking. I saw this at the theatres, and there's was legitimately a hushed gasp from the audience when it happened.

I'll always criticize this movie for being overlong, treating Finn like garbage and for having pointless setpieces reeking of fuck-you Disney money, but I agree with TC. The light-speed ramming scene fucked hard.
