After reading these writeups, I wish I had ranked YN a couple slots higher.

Though the characters and the story's 2nd half left me feeling underwhelmed, there's no denying how fun and intense YN is. The cherry on top is how it toys around with various slasher tropes--some of which I didn't pick up on until now.

Lightning Strikes - Youll float too!

It is very much a fantasy as well as a horror, and plays the two parts of the film together well. This film can be summed up as What if The Goonies fought the Thing? which is a pretty enticing idea on its own.

I love this take so much.

I'm stunned that IT didn't crack the Top 15. Stunned. Like, I'm shitting and vomiting uncontrollably right now.

I didn't watch Part 2, so perhaps I was fortunate to not have my overall IT experience tainted.

My biggest issue with Part 1 was the pulled punches or "Selectively Dangerous Villain Syndrome" as I like to call it. Many horror movies have this problem where the monster is an unstoppable menace at the beginning of the story, then when it meets the main cast, all of a sudden it gets clumsy or decides to hand out plot armor. Part 1 suffered from this big-time, but the rest of the movie was thankfully a blast.

So I watched the deleted scenes on this one and there is an entire B plot of how the old psychiatrist lady wants to bang her downstairs neighbor who is half her age. Like four scenes in total dedicated to this. It has nothing to do with anything but I wanted everyone to know it because it is super weird.

Thematically, it plays into the idea being split, but I guess they wanted everyone other than Kevin to be a straightforward character.

Snake5555555555 posted...
And I guess while Im on the subject of holy shit what the fuck, I should probably mention THE SCENE in this movie. I was neither frightened nor entertained by what I was watching here, but I will say this movie disturbed me more than any other film on the list, all thanks to a turkey baster and what can I only assume was weeks worth of masturbation. The whole twist of this movie is that the blind man is also a monster, and has the woman responsible for his daugthers death tied up in a room in his basement. How does a blind man who never leaves his house and would be useless navigating places he wasnt intimately familiar with manage to kidnap anyone? Great question, and the movie doesnt feel like answering it. Ill give the movie the benefit of the doubt and assume that she came to his house to apologize, but then that opens up the question of why dont the police check this place out? but I cant sit around focusing on all the ways the movie is dumb because I dont want to write out another six paragraphs.

Regardless, the SECOND TWIST is that this old dude is actually a SUPER MONSTER and had impregnated this woman for the sole purpose of giving him another kid. She dies because blind man wildly firing in the basement has consequences. The scene that Im going to remember, probably forever, from this movie is the one where he throws the main character in this weird harness, brings her off the ground, rips a hole in her pants, and the approaches her with a turkey baster FULL of blind old man semen to now get her pregnant as payback for the baby he accidentally killed because of her earlier. I was squirming this whole scene and had several different variations of holy shit what the fuck come out of my mouth. The scene winds up being capped off with what I can only describe as the HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK climax of this holy shit what the fuck movie, where Clay from 13 Reasons Why shows up and saves her, and she turns the tables on him by forcing him to deepthroat the turkey baster and squeezing until his own cum explodes from his mouth. I hate that forcing him to deepthroat the turkey baster and squeezing until his own cum explodes from his mouth is a sentence I just typed, but if I had to watch it, you have to read it.

Priceless. All of it. I'm not even angry that he ranked it so low or that the movie ranked 5-8 spots lower than I anticipated. Every word he typed out was worth it.

Yeah, so far we've only disemboweled one of the highbrow movies (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night).

Damn. The sequel is never as good as the original.

This is almost always correct when it comes to horror movies. Sequels suck because once you know what the monster/evil/etc. is capable of, it becomes less scary.

That's why it Aliens is such a successful sequel. It doesn't try to be a better horror movie than the original--it doesn't try to be a horror movie at all.

Though not terrible content-wise, the way it's structured makes it a slog. Never been a fan of having to go back in time and play through a separate character's storyline in order to move the overall plot forward.

Character wise, I remember liking Chris, being lukewarm on Hugo, and being disappointed with Geddoe. By the time everything wove together, there was no great sense of "Wow! The gang's all here!" but rather a sort of "Okay, good, now I can finish this damn game and start Star Ocean 3."

So now that we're through 10 movies, I've got a question for the group...

If you had an opportunity to re-rank one revealed movie (higher or lower), which one would it be?

In other words, have the writeups changed your mind on something?

Personally, I would drop A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (my #23) down to around #29. I had hoped that the writeups would help me appreciate the movie more, but ultimately they confirmed that it was just too artsy for me. When I ranked it #23, I gave it the benefit of the doubt, but looking back, I wish I had been more honest with myself about how little I enjoyed it.

this but something else

Yeah, I'm fine with people putting a wager on the entire non-listed field. You don't need to specify to qualify for the +2000 (although it's more fun if you do).

I wouldn't be surprised if PS1 bombed (relative to these 'surely it's top 4' sounding expectations). It feels like the NES, influential, with very popular games at the top, but also very outdated.

Most GameFAQs users would take a bullet for their favorite PS1 Final Fantasy.

Throw in MGS, RE1-3, Xenogears, SotN, Suikoden 1/2, Silent Hill, various mid-tier JRPGs, etc., and I believe you have PS1 at #3 or #4 when the X-Stats roll around.

Here are some Console matches I'd like to see:

SNES vs. PS2
3DS vs. Xbox 360
GameBoy Advance vs. PS3
N64 vs. PS3
Gamecube vs. DS
GameBoy vs. Genesis
Mobile vs. Arcade
Dreamcast vs. Vita

Switch vs. PC
Switch vs. PS1
PS1 vs. PC

Wii U vs. PSP
Wii U vs. Xbox
PSP vs. Xbox

The only problem with a Best Console Ever contest is that outside of Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, PC, and Genesis, everything else is abysmal fodder. Wii U could probably crack 85% on most things.

You'd have to make it a bracket of 32, which would lead to a very short contest.

...So if Switch >>> Gamecube and N64 > Gamecube, then you should probably expect Switch to beat N64 too, yes?

I would take Switch over any Nintendo console other than SNES.

Nintendo console pecking order probably looks something like this:

SNES
Switch
-
N64
Gamecube
DS
GameBoy Advance
NES
Wii
GameBoy (Color)
-
3DS
-
Wii U
Virtual Boy

Tom Nook's list so far:

12) V/H/S
13) Insidious
16) Terrifier
21) Halloween (2018)

He's like the Wendy Byrde of this rankings crew--I don't agree with anything he does, yet I can't look away.

I thought A Quiet Place Part II was every bit as good as the original, honestly. Especially the prologue which really just embarrasses the opening of Bird Box.

The prologue was indeed excellent, but IMO the movie fell apart from there on. The original strongly committed to the "you make noise, you die" concept, and that defined the characters, plot, and worldbuilding in unique and clever ways. When AQP2 relaxed things to "you make noise, you get off with a warning," the spirit was lost for me.

It reminds me of the scene from Aliens in which a Xenomorph gets shot and a soldiers suffers superficial burns from the acid spray. That always bothered me because in the original Alien, one drop of acid-blood can melt through several floors of the Nostramo.

The next five movies should conclude the Low Tier of #25-18 (assuming we consider #30-26 the Bottom Tier). Check out the point totals:

225 #17
254 #18
254 #19
256 #20
266 #21
274 #22
289 #23 Halloween

Our next five movies are all within 20 points of each other. And to make things even more claustrophobic, #18/19 were a tie, with #20 almost making it a three-way tie. Talk about a photo-finish.

After these, there's a 29-point gap between #18 and #17. I'd say #17 marks the start of Mid Tier.

You know what I just realized is super dark about Michael not killing the baby? He decided to not kill it, immediately after killing its mother. So it's incredibly possible that he just gave the baby a slower, more painful death.

Duuuuude. That is dark.

Not just that but also what you said about the impacts of violence. You see it in Laurie and how she terrorises her daughter then acts like Michael at the end, the doctor and if is implied by the final shot of the granddaughter with the knife which goes nowhere in the terrible sequel.

Yeah, definitely fits the "violence either destroys you or lives on through you" theme. Had I been a bigger fan of the Halloween franchise, I might've ranked the reboot higher than Terrifier.

Anyway Im going to guess A Quiet Place because some of the earlier comments about Michael Bay as a producer make me worry that were in for some terrible opinions. I hope Im wrong!

What? I had no idea Michael Bay was involved in AQP.

Although, now it makes sense why the sequel abandons its established rules at many spots for the sake of action.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/8249-which-nintendo-console-is-your-all-time-favorite

Gamecube has been neck-and-neck with N64 all three times that poll has run and beaten it twice. I figure N64 most likely wins 1-on-1 just due to it being closer chronologically to the very dominant SNES but it probably wouldnt be by a whole lot, what with SNES and N64 games not looking or playing remotely similarly.

Shouldnt that cement Gamecube as the probable #5 or do people think it loses to the Switch or PS3 or something? If the latter, do they beat N64 too?

Switch would crush Gamecube, and I say this as a guy who loves Gamecube more than any other system.

Gamecube > N64 is possible because N64 has the shallowest library of any Nintendo console. It would need OoT/MM/SM64 nostalgia to carry it anywhere. Is that enough to beat Gamecube's Melee/Prime/WW/ToS nostalgia? Probably.

The issue with Gamecube is that its games were low-key for the most part. People have to stop and think, "Hmm, what was on Gamecube again?" It also doesn't help that the Cube's flagship game (Melee) is basically obsolete at this point.

The only consoles with a shot at beating SNES are PS1/2 and PC. Switch could be a potential darkhorse due to its current popularity, the handheld factor, and the fact that it plays a ton of older games, but I think it would get SFF'd into the ground by SNES in a 1v1.

I really like Halloween 2018, it is easily the second best Halloween film and that middle portion is up there with anything in the original. And yeah I alluded to it earlier but it does Terrifier much better than Terrifier, they even have the same Jack OLantern kill.

Yeah, I figured Halloween was what you were referencing the day before. Thought maaaybe you meant IT because of the clown antagonists, but Halloween and Terrifier definitely share the brutality factor.

I expect my 29, 27, 25, and 24 to all do well, my 17 to be top 3, and my 10, 9, 6, and 3 to drop before too long. I think I have a chance! You and Nook have a decent lead on me already though so it might be tough to catch up.

With how unpredictable the past few drops have been, I'd say anything's on the table. I'm still stunned that Halloween couldn't last into the Top 15.

My 30, 27, 26, 25, and 24 are all still alive, and I wouldn't be surprised if my 4 and 6 get kicked to the curb early.
