I do wonder what if anything will be done with James Woods. I thought he sounded in KH3 like he was starting to struggle with doing the voice, and there's politics stuff with him too. If I were Disney, I'd start training up an understudy.

Aside from that one line in the trailer, Hades will just be completely silent in game, with a blank stare, just like Danny DeVito's Hercules character in KH3 (pan? I'm too lazy to look it up).

I just don't think they would "tease" star wars like that. There's no point really. If the next KH game is going to have star wars, they're not going to hint at Endor, they're going to announce it in big letters.

Also KH is exactly like Bleach in that they will power up the main character to insane degrees and never actually let him win, so Sora will never reach "true hero status"

Yeah a 5/5 is extremely sucky for sure, so I don't blame you for wanting the uni gig. the extra pay is huge too. I still say option 2 though.

First, the 5 years and tenure possibility thing is tempting. I believe, like many others, that academia is in the beginning / facing the cusp of an enrollment crisis all over, and the days of "no lecturer has ever been fired / not reappointed in the past" shouldn't be taken as gospel anymore. New lecturers are first on the chopping block, even above part-timers and adjuncts, due to the fact that they actually have to pay us a living wage/provide benefits. A CC gig w/tenure might be preferable territory if the crisis does in fact get worse.

As for the time-bind/not starting until August thing: maybe our school is unique, but there has to actually be an official "job call" for the university lecturer right? meaning they have to advertise it and field applications? I think it will be doubtful that the CC would keep you in pocket for long enough for the job search to proceed. Usually if a part-timer is brought in as a full-timer it's for a temporary position.

Anyway, just don't sign a contract with the CC unless you definitely plan to take the position; that's really all I'm saying.

DLC was pretty good if I remember

but yeah, this and the sequel are too full of busy work, and I'm too much a completionist to ignore stuff on the overly crowded map.

also, they are perhaps the worst offenders of "trinket based gameplay" where you pick up a bunch of stuff on the ground and none of it feels like it matters, until you try to upgrade a weapon and you don't have a part.

Also, everyone is saying Option 3, which makes sense up until the "reneg" part. You really shouldn't sign a contract and then break it. If you accept the position with the CC, they'll expect you to sign a contract soon. Once you sign that document, it is extremely bad form to not take it or take a different position. I think Academia is slightly different from other jobs in this way.

You could apply for the uni job now to set the groundwork for applying later, but I think you might as well just take the guaranteed full-time gig.

Option 2

I'm a full time lecturer also and think this is the way to go. Keep in mind that full-time lecturer jobs are usually 3 year contracts anyway, so in three years you could re-evaluate. But you're right, the job market is so competitive now you should basically take what you have.

Just played through Radical Dreamers for the first time ever. Here's some thoughts.

  1. The battle music works better here, which leads me to believe it's really the orchestration that hurts the battle music in CC. It's the organ/violin being turned up so high in the mix I think. It's actually meant to be MIDI/low quality.
  2. If you think of this as an interquel meant to build hype for the sequel to Chrono Trigger, it actually does a pretty good job. I imagine if I played this when it came out/before Cross I'd be super amped. I also probably wouldn't really have had any issues with the questionable story stuff like Lucca dying, the Schala/Magus/gil/Guile stuff or the cursed masamune because I'd just assume that the sequel would "fix" that stuff. The problem with Cross is that it doesn't fix that stuff at all and is basically like "this happened, deal with it"
  3. However from what I know it wasn't marketed as an interquel or anything, so as a weird spin-off game that uses characters/ideas from Trigger to tell it's own parallel universe story it's... also better here than in Cross. I like the idea of Lynx demolishing the dragoons and keeping Riddell as a kind of hostage/daughter scenario: real big One Piece vibes.
  4. Anyway you slice it though, one story thing that doesn't make sense here or in Cross is the idea that Porre is suddenly a big military power.
  5. As a text adventure / "visual novella" it's surprisingly decent. Kid here is basically the same, but it really makes me long for a Cross where Serge is an actual character. I like me a silent protagonist, but I think Cross's story would be aided immensely with a likeable main character. RD did more to get me to like Serge in an hour than Cross did in its entirety.
  6. Really interesting to see the early character designs. Might honestly prefer this Kid to what we got. Magil>Guile as well. Serge's design is a wash, because it's bad either way.
Anyway, nice to finally play this. So thanks Square, make Chrono three now.

yeah, I'm not sure what the fascination was with having "strong, medium, and weak attacks" in turn-based JRPG's was, but lots of people were doing it and it was never good. it probably worked best in xenogears, but it still made everything unnecessarily slow.

I don't like rpg's that hide their best characters best characters behind story decisions (chrono cross, which might be the worst offender has got me thinking about this).

I don't mind the dual protagonist angle; I actually think it works pretty well here. the game has some good moments but it's pretty uneven if my memory is correct. translation was pretty bad too if I recall.

I disagree in both cases.

You could say the first Xenosaga game's story is bad but you cannot by definition say the rest is bad because you've never experienced it. There is a significant difference between judging something halfway that is released at one time versus something later because the writers may have changed, or the current writer may have taken feedback and gotten better. They may have also adjusted the story to focus more on what people want and less on what they didn't, etc which isn't the case with judging something that is already out and done and can't really be changed.

I DO think it's fair to not be into something based on the first entry and never give the rest a chance, though.

yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that someone could rate xenosaga 2 or 3 having only played the first half of xenosaga 1. definitely not.

however, I do think that in FFXIV's case, a person (not me, but Axl in this case) should be able to say "look, I played all 100+ hours of terrible fetch quests and meandering of ARR, I don't care how good people say the expansions are, my experience is enough for me to rate FFXIV given how long I played it." That person couldn't rate the expansions individually, but I think it's fair to let them give a rating for "their overall experience with FFXIV."

A better example than Xenosaga might be if the beginning of Persona 4 is really slow and boring to someone, and they give a rating of 2/10 because they never got past the first real dungeon. I'm fine with this. I disagree wholeheartedly, but that's their experience so let's count the vote.

but yeah, whatever Lightning decides is fine, obviously. I'm just saying I see the logic.

I think it's fine to play ARR, quit and give the entire game the same score, tbh. It's the same as me playing half of the first Xenosaga and giving its overall story a bad score, I think. If the game's story is so boring it keeps you from playing, then that should factor into the grade.

Finished Elden Ring, am I getting this?

I think it's worth it, but it's a mixed bag. The strategy itself is really good, (maybe the best I've played in this genre since the gamecube fire emblems), but the writing is really uneven (some chapters absolutely work - some feel like a complete waste of time). The music is kind of forgettable (aside from a couple cool tracks) and the overall presentation (voice acting, menus, accessibility options) is rough.

I kind of put it down because the story wasn't going in a particularly interesting/appealing direction to me, and knowing I wasn't on the best/golden route kind of soured me on it. I do like the choice/alignment system and the multiple pathways; I just think they should allow you to jump around more.

also, it really would be better with a job system/more overworld freedom/side quests ala tactics. I think having to move across the world at a slower pace and fight random battles might actually help the world building, instead of how it is now, where you traverse continents immediately like season 8 of Game of Thrones.

all that being said, it's still a solid 7/10 overall thanks to how tough the battles actually are.
