I'm sure there'll be detractors in here but I think it balances atmospheric storytelling and actual cutscenes well. It's a simple story but the champions and other side characters are great.

Anyway, it's either this or LA as far as best Zelda story, imo.

it's so weird; a year ago I'd be super jazzed about rodgers staying. but honestly I think I'm over him both as a person and a player, and I legitimately think we should just head into rebuilding years instead of a prolonged "pretty good but not good enough" phase.

It's not that bad. It definitely feels as though these voice actors were handed scripts with extremely basic directions and they didn't do many re-takes. Like Serenoa's voice actor probably got a bunch of lines with *impassioned* or *sympathetic* next to it and that's it.

the thing is, a lot of modern videogames get away with slightly sub-average voice acting because the voices are accompanied with a cg or in-game cutscene. you can get away with a bad line reading thanks to the drama of the scene or the facial expression. you don't get that with retro 16/32 bit homage games. additionally, in a story heavy game like this, it's useless anyway because you really just want to read the text and not have to wait for someone to speak it.

i can see how it's "too much story" if you're waiting for all of these lines to be spoken and not just reading at your own pace. otherwise I think the amount of story between battles is fine.

For some reason I dislike japanese voice acting in video games, even though I'm a subs-anime guy

the batman/batgirl stuff in killing joke makes it terrible. I don't really like any of the DCAU animated movies though. mask of the phantasm is okay I guess.

probably my #1 recommended change from the early demo and they did nothing. really REALLY should've made an option to replace voice with text sound effects.

maybe their defense is that this was done remotely during covid, but even so it truly is indefensibly bad. I'll keep them on for a while because I like the battle voices, but might turn the voice volume to zero.

I would've said the DCAU should be left out, but the poll included the lego batman movie so I guess everything's fair game

It's actually FFVII remake, for sheer amount of hype and sheer amount of surprise at how good it is

where I'm at with BBS is that they did a good job with the characters, but also it's ultimately an unnecessary story that didn't really help the narrative of KH at all; it just made it needlessly complicated

if you remember the theories post KH2 and pre-BBS, you'd be hard pressed to say that BBS was the best possible option there

If Miyazaki wants his games to be difficult than just say so

the idea that his games and his games only are about "overcoming hardship" is so stupid. all games rely on players feeling pleasure from accomplishing tasks/overcoming challenges. that doesn't mean they all have to be brutally punishing. it's 2022 and developers have the means to make easy modes relatively quickly and easily.

again, if you want to make a difficult game, make a difficult game. but don't try to have your cake and eat it too by saying "I wish everyone could enjoy my games!" and then not doing anything about it.

I love it but if you weren't hooked by the time you jumped off tutorial plateau then you probably won't be

maybe finding some of the memories and going to kakariko might help you feel a bit connected lore-wise, but it's mostly the exploration that hooked me

Okay, think I'll give up for real this time

I just can't make anymore progression. I'm at level 19. I have super basic equipment and leveled up my starting sword once. I've been exploring all over the south and east maps from the starting area. For awhile I thought I was getting better at this game. I beat the gaol monster and felt accomplished. I beat a pumpkin head boss. I beat Patches. But now I'm at a wall where I just can't get anywhere. Levelling is taking forever. I can't beat the castle morne boss, so I for sure can't beat Margit yet. Whenever I go into a dungeon the enemies are always too tough for me.

I'm playing confessor and it just feels super slow. Haven't found a staff yet so can't do magic. All the mini bosses guard break me immediately and I can't get the dodge timing right.

To be fair to Elden ring this is definitely the most I've enjoyed a Souls game. There really should be an easy mode though

this is infuriating. there is no indication that you're about to face a boss like opponent you can't run away from. feels like a weird glitch honestly. like I'm stuck in the multiplayer mode or something.

like the game specifically told me this was a safe space where fighting wasn't allowed and all of a sudden there's this red scythe thing that killed me and did actually take my runes

I've lost something like 3000 runes to an invading alberich NPC. I don't want to just leave them but I can't beat him and I can't fast travel out of here apparently

I don't know why I keep buying into From software hype cycle, knowing the game isn't for me.

Yes, I think I'm giving up after Margit the Fell.

First Bloodborne, then Sekiro, now Elden Ring. These games just make me feel like crap.
