The cast looked great but the trailer made it seem like a Wes Anderson knock off with none of the charm.It's got a small modicum of charm, and yes, the cast, costuming and set design are all superb as a period piece. Even if Sam Rockwell does seem like he's sleeping through the role a bit. My issue is that it feels itself so clever by being a whodunnit that riffs on whodunnits, yet it has to contrive itself in order to be that subversive. The jokes are a bit too dry. It kind of over-relies on split-screen shots. There's a trippy dream sequence that feels tonally out of place. There are times when, despite wanting to be subversive, the film dutifully goes through the motions of a classic whodunnit and it just feels bored with itself in those scenes. The movie is set up where you think the third act has arrived and then they're like "no wait this is the actual third act", but it basically feels like they're starting the movie over, yet in this "new" movie they have to speedrun to the end, so the pacing's a bit awkward. It's not bad really, but I feel it would have hit better ten or twenty years ago, in a world where Knives Out hadn't already subverted whodunnits a lot more cleanly. --- CyricZ He/him |
