Not at all "anime in a nutshell."

None of them are lolis, and none of them have grossly exaggerated proportions.

For that pic to be anime in a nutshell, the one on the left would have to be flat chested and the one on the right would need tits the size of the middle girl's head.

I believe you mean this?

Yeah, pretty much. Now where's the loli character? There has to be at least one or else it's not a true anime.

Because there's a much more relatable explanation for everything in your metaphor that has little or nothing to do with race. If you want people to think about race, you have to give some indication that's the direction you intend.

For example, "You" are simply the boss's son who gets to skate by due to being the boss's son. Everyone relates to that, regardless of race. The "coworker" could be simply an average working-class guy who's trying to get by. The supposed raise that isn't even enough to get that average Joe onto the same level as the boss's son is less obviously about minorities and affirmative action and more obvious as a greedy company underpaying their employee while still expecting them to take on more responsibilities. I can't remember the last job I worked where I didn't see at least one person in this situation. The inter-office conflict is just basic workplace drama that happens literally everywhere for even the most basic of reasons. It's less likely to be equated to the Civil War and more likely to be equated to people feeling like they should have gotten the raise instead of the other guy (I've been here longer, it should've been me instead of him, etc.)

Literally everything has an easier and more familiar explanation than race and affirmative action. And there was no mention of anything to lead a reader in that direction other than the whole "staging a sit-in" comment, but the topic was already off the rails by that point. Face it, your setup was poor and so you didn't get the response you wanted. It's got very little to do with a failing on the reader's part, though.

everything you're saying tells me you're a weak reader and writer, not that my metaphor was bad (it IS bad, but I did what I wanted to do)

In fact you wouldn't even have gotten it had I not pointed it out

You're not trying to paint with a hammer. You're trying to hammer a nail with a paint brush.

I'm not the one who made a horrible metaphor that completely ignores the point it was trying to make. Your writing skills are more in question than my reading skills. The fact that literally nobody would have gotten it had you not pointed it out does not imply that our reading skills are trash. It's more likely to imply that you did a very shitty job of communicating your intention and standpoint.

Also, there is a very large difference between these two stances on affirmative action:
1. Minorities should get preferential treatment.
2. Minorities should not be treated differently than anybody else.

I do not believe that a black guy should get a job over a white guy simply because of the fact that he was born black. I believe that the black guy should get the job over a white guy if and only if he is more qualified for that position than the white guy. The same holds for hiring a white guy over a black guy for a job. And if you find that they are both equally qualified throughout the interviewing/evaluating process, then you have probably screwed up that process and there are flaws in your evaluation system. That being said...flip a coin if you have to.

I am personally against affirmative action in the form of preferential treatment of minorities. I am for it in the form of removing the already-existing prejudices that place minorities on their heels before the evaluation process even begins. Since the latter option is extremely unlikely to actually occur in society as it stands today, I lean more towards the preferential treatment due mostly to the fact that since white people do already have "an edge" when beginning the evaluation process for a job because of those prejudices, it is slightly more fair to give "an edge" to the minority should they still be in the running at the end of the process.

I think they should get equal treatment. There's nothing hypocritical about that.

If you do the same job as someone of another race, you should be paid the same as that other person. They should not get preferential treatment because they're black. Just like I should not get preferential treatment because I'm white.

There are two ways to resolve the situation in the first post. The guy who's complaining gets a pay cut or the other guy gets a pay raise. Considering your claim that he's only got his job because he's the boss's kid or, he shouldn't have had the job in the first place. But if both people are performing adequately a the job, they should be paid the same for their work. This isn't that complicated.

this was the f***ing point

Ok, so you wanted people to sympathize with the coworker. Mission accomplished on that front, I guess? Everyone did.

But you're also expecting people to make the leap of equating this to the racial divide. And the problem is that there is absolutely no reason or indication that that leap is necessary or intended. You ask how people can assume that your coworker is getting screwed over and yet still believe black people don't need affirmative action. Well it's pretty simple...lots of white people get screwed over by shitty companies all the time. There's no reason for someone to think of race at all. If it's a white guy getting screwed over people would still be upset that he's getting screwed over.

The only way this metaphor makes anybody think about anything meaningful is if race is inherently involved. But it's not. You set up the scenario in a very poor manner and as a result you didn't get anybody thinking about what you wanted them to think about.

A better way to put it would have been to mention he was black/latino/whatever originally. And then when someone says "maybe he's getting flack by management because he's bad at the job" you point out that he's actually got better numbers than you do. That would begin the discussion of racial profiling/discrimination. The way you set it up has nothing to do with race or actively implies (via complete avoidance of race) that race has nothing to do with it. You actually pushed people away from the race discussion with your premise rather than towards it.

Race was never mentioned, so everyone sympathized with the coworker. That doesn't do anything, though. Everyone is going to sympathize with the coworker when race isn't a factor.

Frankly the topic and the metaphor sucked because the thing you were trying to address was never even mentioned or implied at any point. You can't bring attention to the plight of something without mentioning that something.

That's like saying "I can't believe they keep updating tree-cutting machines and making them more and more efficient! The old stuff works perfectly fine as it is! It's just so wasteful to throw away all that old equipment!" When really what you're trying to say is "Deforestation is a terrible thing! We should be working to slow it down, not speed it up!" Nobody is going to make that leap in logic because there's no indication that leap is relevant.

No, you've got it flipped. You didn't mention that his performance was bad, so everyone assumed he was just fine at the job. Therefore, everyone just accepted that the guy was getting screwed over and you were being an ass.

There wasn't anybody saying "well he probably deserves it for some reason or another" because there was no implication that he did. If you had added the part about him getting harassed by management all the time, I'm sure you would have gotten at least a few ignorant people coming in and saying something like "I bet he's getting harassed because he keeps fucking up, and if he just did the job right he wouldn't have to deal with that." Those are the people you should be trying to reach, but none of them came out of the woodwork since that implication of sub-standard performance wasn't there for them to use to justify their prejudice.

That would have made the metaphor significantly better.

Bok_Choi posted...

So why can't everyone see how minorities are getting screwed over the same way

Because you made no mention of his skill at the job. You claimed to be upset purely at the pay and benefits. To most racists and anti-affirmative-action people, the fact that he sucks at his job is inherent and a very good reason for him to earn less. Since nobody was given any impression that you thought his performance was sub-par, the metaphor you were trying to push fell flat.

The key difference is that the people you are trying to reach with this argument would agree with it in the manner you set it up. The person getting paid less for doing the same job is getting screwed. Everyone can see that very clearly.

The problem is that the people you are trying to reach are the ones who would claim that guy shouldn't have had the job in the first place. They would justify his lower wages not by claiming he isn't doing the same job. They would justify it by claiming that he's doing a poor job at that position and instead of doing it for lower wages he should instead be fired and replaced by someone "more competent."

I had the worst teeth you could ever imagine. Trust me on this. I'd show you pictures, but there aren't any, because I never once in my life smiled for a photograph due to my horrible teeth. I stopped brushing or flossing them when I was 17, and never did a single second of dental hygiene for 8 years. They were cracked, broken, rotting, and falling out. I had 4 exposed nerves, 4 impacted wisdom teeth, and about half of my mouth had reached the point where I could only chew on one side (biting into anything hard like an apple was physically impossible).

Then my brother got engaged, and I was to be his Best Man. And I decided that there was no way in hell I was going to be the Best Man at my brother's wedding and not be able to smile for his pictures. So I went to the dentist and the oral surgeon to get everything fixed via dental implants.

When I walked in for the first consult with the dentist, he took one look at my teeth and the conversation went something like this:

Doc: How are you here right now?
Me: What do you mean?
Doc: I mean how was it even possible for you to get here today? I've had patients with a quarter of this kind of damage and they were physically unable to walk because the pain was so intense it made them dizzy.
Me: I dunno...it doesn't really hurt? It just looks gross and it's hard to eat some things.
Doc: It doesn't hurt?? I can see the nerves! Do you have sensation in your teeth? Which one am I tapping? *taps exposed nerve*
Me: This one. *points to the right tooth*
Doc: I...I don't even have words. I've never seen anything like this before. You've got sensation, so it's not dead, but it's completely exposed and it doesn't hurt? That's a new one for me. Well, it's not going to be easy, but I promise we're gonna get you fixed up. I think this is gonna be fun!

"Fun" isn't exactly the word I would have used to describe the next ~6 months, but god dammit it was the best decision of my life. And he and the oral surgeon worked their asses off for me. Once the plans were set up, the surgeon ended up pulling 15 teeth in one session (front 5 on top, back molar on either side on the top, both molars on both sides on the bottom, and 4 impacted wisdom teeth). I've now got 3 titanium screws in my top front that hold an implant bridge for the 5 teeth there, and another screw on each side for implants in place of the first molars on the bottom.

So just remember that whatever you're going through right now, it could be worse. And be happy that you're taking care of it now instead of waiting until it's too late. I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out for me in the end, mind you. I just really wish I hadn't waited so long to do it. My self-confidence was completely shot due in large part to the fact that I physically couldn't smile without embarrassing myself. Never underestimate how big of an impact such a seemingly simple little thing can have.

I'm surprised the dress code doesn't address this.

It did. She chose to ignore it and then get upset when she got in trouble for it.

tops must cover all parts of undergarments and shall not be low cut or revealing.

Seems pretty obviously a "Fair. Next." case here.

Her argument was "I didn't wear a bra because the straps would've shown, and that's against the dress code anyway!"

Reality's argument was "this shirt is low-cut and revealing, so it's against the dress code and the bra is irrelevant. Stop being a stupid entitled bitch."

Considering the amount of freedom the devs are giving modders, the s***fest might actually become worth playing over time. Sorta like Bethesda's games. >_>

Bethesda games at least have a solid foundation to start with, though. The modding community for them is spectacular, obviously. And lots of people complain about Bethesda games at launch, but it's mostly because of either 1. lots of glitches or 2. fairly shallow game in general. But the general rules of the game and the setup for the gameplay is typically pretty solid.

FF15 is shit because the gameplay is garbage, the story is mediocre, the world is fairly boring, and combat is an absolute joke. The foundation itself is worthless. With the effort and work they're going to have to put in in order for the modders to make it worth playing, they might as well just make a brand new game on their own.

I was going to come in this topic and respond with "ummmmmm....duh?"

Then I read the link name and realized you were specifically talking about FF15. Fair enough. But it's still not enough incentive to try and play that shitfest again.

...I will, however, probably look up pictures of the mod when it's released. You know, just to see how high-quality the work of the modding community is, that's all. >_>

And yet you're replying in this topic and still aren't answering his question.

Which question did he ask me?

So you are saying the judge could order me to not drink any milk for two years if he wanted to and that would not be unethical?

Yes. Do you have any evidence to the contrary?

We're done talking because you're wasting my time.

That's clearly never mattered before.

Actually, the fact that that has never stopped you before is pretty much the exact reason you are consistently in the shitty situations you're in.
